Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7

Last year's CNET Editors' Choice award winner Kaspersky returns with another winner. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 features a new interface and new protection. But, unlike last year, the competition for Editors' Choice in this space was fierce with several worthy contenders all bunching toward the top of the scale. For example, BitDefender Antivirus 2008 is perhaps the most improved product of the year, nipping at the heals of Kaspersky. What makes Kaspersky Anti-Virus continue to outshine its competition is its ease of use combined with thorough antivirus protection. No firewall, no gimmicks, just straight AV protection. Kaspersky also makes an Internet security suite, yet Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 feels complete as a standalone product and not, like Norton Antivirus 2008, a cog in larger family of products. That said, there is no firewall protection within Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2008, leaving you to choose your own firewall protection. Once again, Kaspersky requires considerably less disk space than Norton. The only real negative here is the list price, which can be $10 to $20 more than the competition, depending where you purchase it. Still, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 provides the most complete antivirus production on the market today and deserves our Editors' Choice for best antivirus product for 2008. For a look inside, see our slide show.

Setup
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 costs $59.95 for a single license and $69.95 for a three-user license. By comparison, Norton Antivirus 2008 costs $39.95 for a single-user license (there are no three-user versions of NAV 2008). Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 runs on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista, where Norton Antivirus runs only on Windows XP and Windows Vista. Kaspersky requires 512 RAM and at least 50MB of hard drive space (Norton requires 300 MB of hard drive space). A full-function 30-day trial version of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 is available.

We experienced no problems with several different installations during the month of August. After installation, the system requires a reboot for full protection.

Should you want to remove Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7, the product includes an uninstall option in the All Programs menu. Once we uninstalled the product and rebooted, we found no lingering evidence of Kaspersky remaining on our machine.

Interface
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 sports a cleaner, more sophisticated interface than last year's. We like it best among the 2008 antivirus applications we've seen. Immediately our eye was drawn to the red banner with text that told us our signature files were out of date. This is visually very effective and efficient, whereas a simple Fix It button to the side is not always informative. Also, unlike Norton's morbid, black border, we like the open, bright, and colorful interface of Kaspersky that is skinnable to suite your own tastes.

We like Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7's clean, intuitive interface best among the 2008 antivirus applications we've seen.

Another interface feature we like is the left navigation. Within seconds, we were able to find the configuration settings we wanted to tweak.

In addition to antivirus and antispyware protection, Kaspersky offers antirootkit protection as well. We like the built-in System Restore, so that should your computer ever become infected, Kaspersky will roll back any registry changes to a time prior to the infection. This is effective against spyware and rootkits.

Features
Not only is the malware protection within Kaspersky proactive, with top-of-the-line heuristics to identify newly created malware, and, like BitDefender Antivirus 2008, Kaspersky's traditional signature-based protection is updated hourly, along with any available program updates. We like this approach, as Kaspersky seems to have figured out what Norton has not: how to deliver small file updates. Plus, Kaspersky has consistently demonstrated the shortest response time to breaking new malware threats.

Kaspersky still provides users with the process of creating a rescue disk, something that many antivirus products no longer offer. And, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 includes a process so that the operating system can revert back to a time just before an infection. Like Norton, Kaspersky can also throttle back on system resources, depending on user activity. Unlike Norton, Kaspersky can, by default, scan only recently changed files, greatly shortening the overall scan time considerably.

Performance
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 scored well in CNET Labs' performance tests and in third-party, independent antivirus testing using live viruses, although not always the top position. On the CNET iTunes test, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 came in just 4 seconds above the test system at 272 seconds. On the CNET Microsoft Office test, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 finished in 1,518 seconds. In a test scanning a single folder with compressed and media files, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 completed it in 521 seconds. And in boot speed, Kaspersky came in second, with a fast 29.77 seconds. To find out how we test antivirus software , see CNET Labs' How we test: Antivirus software page.

In terms of whether or not Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 will protect your PC, we cite results from two leading independent antivirus testing organizations. In the latest test results from AV-Comparatives.org, for on-demand scans Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 earned an Advanced + (highest) rating, catching 98 percent of all malware tested and tying with Norton Antivirus 2007. However, for the Retrospective/Proactive test, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 earned an Advanced (second-highest) rating, although Kaspersky produced very few false positives compared with other antivirus apps in the same test. From CheckVir.com, there is no data. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 was not included in recent tests, however, when it was last tested, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 earned a Standard rating when only the ability to search is tested, not antivirus removal.

Support
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 provides an excellent context-sensitive, in-program help file. For example, if you are on the Data Files page and you click Help, you're taken to the entry for Data Files within the Help file. It's a small touch, but one we don't see often enough. Kaspersky offers a robust 321-page PDF manual (the most complete of any antivirus application we've seen); it includes just about everything--except for an index, although the table of contents is richly detailed. Kaspersky also delivers excellent online FAQ and knowledge base. There are also active user forums. Finally, you can e-mail or call a toll-free number for live technical support.

Conclusion
If you're looking for an antivirus application that's good, fast, and light on system resources, Kaspersky is the one. We found this antivirus application easy enough for beginners, with customization features that will please more-advanced users, as well. But, with the competition gaining, by no means was this a knockout; this year's Editors' Choice race was tighter than ever.

Kaspersky has been one of the best antivirus software

Pros: Highly Effective antivirus/antispyware protection, Light on computer resources , Nearly all features are configurable ,Great interface, easy-to-use and intuitive

Cons: I like this product

Review: Ease of Use:Kaspersky has always been among the best samples of antivirus software on the market, but has been less than simple to use. With the release of version 7, Kaspersky dramatically improved their interface giving this software an interface that matches the quality of the overall package. Further improvements have been made for the 2009 version. From a geek?s perspective, Kaspersky's interface is probably the best of all the software reviewed. That being said, it may not be ideal for someone who's not interested in fine-tuning and tweaking their antivirus software. Every feature is configurable and controllable with intuitive and easy to use controls in Kaspersky Anti-Virus.
Effectiveness:Kaspersky Labs has always been known for its ability to effectively detect and remove viruses as well as or better than any software program on the market. Like BitDefender, Kaspersky was able to remove over 98% of all viruses it encountered in the most recent objective tests of AV-test.org. Kaspersky is also certified by all of the major virus/malware testing laboratories. Tests confirm Kaspersky's effectiveness. It found every virus on the test computer.
Although Kaspersky is excellent at detecting viruses and malware, it could use some work in the detection of spyware. Independent tests by AV-test.org showed that Kaspersky allowed 8% of adware/spyware to go undetected. Furthermore, Kaspersky?s proactive/heuristic engine failed to meet the high standards set by BitDefender, NOD32, F-Secure, Panda and some others.
Updates:The best antivirus software packages provide virus signature updates on a routine basis. Both Kaspersky and BitDefender update their signatures every hour. That may seem like overkill until a new virus rapidly begins to spread around the globe and your antivirus software only updates every week. That may be too late for you! Since it does its updates automatically, you get the best protection with no effort on your part.
Feature Set:Kaspersky's feature set is one of its strongest assets. While BitDefender?s interface is primarily an enable/disable feature set, Kaspersky is the software-tweakers dream with controls for nearly all of its features. Like most of the antivirus packages in our review, Kaspersky protects your computer from spyware as well as viruses. Scanning for both viruses and spyware simultaneously is far more efficient in terms of time and resources than stopping to do both separately. Like Bit Defender, ?TopTenREVIEWS Gold Award? winner, Kaspersky scans email and port 80 traffic (port 80 is the port that receives web traffic and must be open while browsing the web) so that this excellent software can detect and block online viruses, Trojans, and various other malware before they can cause you trouble.
Kaspersky also has a proactive defense for your computer. Kaspersky watches for unwanted adware, dialers, rootkits, remote access utilities and locks specific registry keys that malicious code may target to damage your computer. Furthermore, Kaspersky now includes protection from viruses while using IM and ICQ.
Kaspersky, in its ever-vigilance against viruses and other malware, now helps you create a rescue disc in the case that your computer is hit by some malicious code that makes your system unbootable. Although this effort to prepare users for the computer equivalent of Armageddon is commendable, the process is tedious and difficult. If you downloaded your operating system or the system disc is lost or unavailable, this feature will be unavailable to you.
Ease of Installation:Kaspersky is among the easiest pieces of antivirus software to install. Its rather compact 50MB file downloads quickly and installation and activation are a snap. After rebooting, Kaspersky was on the job protecting our test computer. One complaint is that Kaspersky did not automatically remove the antivirus software already on the test computer. This is bound to lead to problems with the average user. Invariably, some will unknowingly end up running two antivirus programs and problems will ensue. With two antivirus packages running, computers run more slowly and error messages become an issue. On a positive note, Kaspersky does come with its own uninstall utility and after running it, no traces of it were found still in the registry.

Made my computer run slow!

Pros: It found some potential threats that another anti virus program did not find, easy to install and use, very user friendly.

Cons: It slowed down my computer tremendously! It took almost 5 minutes for the internet to open, pages downloaded slowly, very frustrating if you have more than one window open at a time, also made start up very slow.

Review: I just uninstalled Kaspersky and installed Norton Internet Security 2009, it's amazing how fast my computer runs now. I only used the trial version of Kaspersky, so I'm glad I tried it instead of purchasing it.

Kaspersky is great. LOVE IT!

Pros: Great security system ! Excellent protection ! 1000 times better than norton 360!

Cons: Time consuming. But worth it !

Avoid Like The Plague

Pros: None whatsoever

Cons: Slows your machine down to a crawl
Hogs resources
Updates very very slowly
Constant irritating pop-ups

Review: I fell for the advertising and purchased this instead of Norton AV. Big mistake..... The install was fast but then the first virus scan and updates crashed my machine. I have all the latest service packs and had followed the manual to the letter. I have tried twice to reinstall it but have just given up. This product stinks. It might be the best bit of kit at detecting viruses but if I can't use my machine what good is it?

Spend your money elsewhere.....

I think that Kaspersky Antivirus 07 one of the BEST AV

Pros: - Good detection rate
- Hourly updates
- Good, user friendly interface
- It is a trustable AV product

Cons: - Sometimes it can be very slow
- It can be annoying
- It is expensive a bit

Review: I think that Kaspersky is the real protection for computer. (and nod32) Kaspersky won lots of awards for example VB100 and another things. (Detailed at kaspersky.com)
It is a great product. Thx.....

Resource Friendly

Pros: While I am impressed with its ability to handle viruses very effectively, I am even more pleased with its low memory use and disk space. My wife's laptop has half the ram of my new desktop and runs faster with Kaspersky. I am moving to Kaspersky.

Cons: We bought Kaspersky Anti-Virus a couple months ago, when a mundo virus invaded my wife's laptop. At that time, we felt secure with AVG free, but obviously it was not enough. We still had to re-format before using Kaspersky.

Review: If you want solid viirus protection versus a free application, this is the least bulky of them all. It rusn a variety of scans and is constantly being updated.

* Best anti virus Period.

Pros: The software is easy to use, runs silently, its never in the way. norton was the worst i have used, mcafee a little better. This is hands down the best. I will never use another av software.

Cons: Nothing , its flawless. imo

Review: Buy this above all others.

No installation/authorization email sent.

Pros: Don't know yet; can't even install it.

Cons: Credit card purchase confirmed. I received 2 emails but neither contained the info. necessary to download and activate product.

Review: very unimpressed so far

A truly excellent product that does not overtax my laptop.

Pros: Excellent protection. Does not overtax system resources unlike a certain major name-brand product.

Cons: I can't think of any. The price was a little bit on the high side.

Review: Provides excellent protection for your computer. It identified a potential security risk not found by my previous (expensive name-brand) anti-virus software. It not only identified this risk but took me to a web page containing detailed information about the problem that contained links for additional independent information about the problem as well as a link to the site of the software company whose software had the potential security risk where I could get an update to fix the problem. Simple. Easy. Really good. Best of all, my laptop runs like brand-new now! The constant updates from my previous anti-virus software took my laptop's CPU to 100 percent and it flatlined there for long periods of time. After uninstalling that program and installing Kasperky's product that's not an issue now and my laptop runs superbly!

User Rating: 1/10

Do not waste your money.

Pros: Really none...

Cons: Hard to setup, expensive.

Review: I tried the trial out and it just didn't meet my standards for an av program. I like avast! because it has a scanner that automatically scans the folder that I just opened. Or it scans the thing that I am downloading and I can abort the connection. I suggest avast! way over this crap.

The best anti virus i have used!

Pros: Always running, hourly updates, and tiny footprint

Cons: May have to find your own personal settings.

Review: I've used Norton and found it bloated and slow, but very strong. I've used AVG and found it to small but a little weak.
Using Kaspersky 7, I found the perfect balance. The anti virus would sit in the background watching and waiting and if some threat did appear it would take action.
One downside I found is you may have to configure your personal settings sometimes for a more pleasant experience. For example, you get nagged if your away from an internet connection and the anti virus cant update, you may want to shut auto updates off.

Personally I really like Kaspersky 7, I would recommend trying it.

CRAPPY 1/10

Pros: There are none

Cons: For techies only - pain in the butt to configure

Review: resources hog and messages that I, as computer literate, but NOT a computer tech, do not understand. This is NOT for the faint hearted, or average, computer user. Other, non-highly rated spyware detection software, has detected spyware that, obviously, Kaspersky did not. Spam, too.

Very Good Easy to install

Pros: Easy to install

Cons: none come to mind

Review: I have used Kaspersky with XP and now Vista havent had any problems with install or performance. It works for me

User Rating: 8/10

best program to date

Pros: fast,reliable,secure

Cons: web anti virus too slow I disabled it as a firewall is better

Review: Most that have major problems with kav either have it setup wrong or are using pirated keys.if you customize the scans to scan only new and modified files then only the first complete scan takes as long as all other AV programs do and scans after that use a fraction of time to complete

User Rating: 10/10

Best Investment I have ever made

Pros: Easy to Install, Use and Configure

Cons: Haven't Found Any Yet

Review: I LOVE this product. I don't know why everyone else is having problems. This was the easiest to install, takes up less space, and easy to use. There is a 800 for technical support and an instruction manual that is very detailed to answer any question and very easy to follow I might add. I would recomment this to anyone.

Possible incompatibility between VISTA SP1 and Kaspersky AV

Pros: It worked great until I got the VISTA SP 1 upgrade

Cons: Since I VISTA ugraded to SP 1, I can't get Kaspersky to work

Review: Just after I upgraded to VISTA Service Pack 1, I began having problems with Kaspersky Anti-Virus. When I boot up, I get a warning that my anti-virus protection is off. I can't activate it. I can't repair it. I can't even uninstall it. I've tried everything and it is very frustrating. I am waiting to hear from Kaspersky to see if they have any ideas. I thought this was a great AV until this happened.

User Rating: 2/10

Fatal errors? Nothing I want to mess with.

Pros: System speed isn't dragged down as much as with other programs.

Cons: It simply isn't agreeable with my computer.

Review: I'm not a fancy person. Windows XP. Firefox browser. And rarely do I ever have errors--until I loaded this beast (which mind you, is cumbersome to install). Three major crashes in 5 minutes? I couldn't delete this thing fast enough. I've never had such issues with an antivirus program!

User Rating: 5/10

Works on one of my computers, but not on the other

Pros: Works well on my Dell XPS with XP Pro

Cons: Abysmally slow on my Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV600with XP Mediacenter to a standstill.

Review: I had Kaspersky Anti-Virus installed on two computers and have used it for over a year. On one computer it works like a charm. On the other, it slowed my system down so much that at times I would disable it in order to play a video or run Microsoft Explorer (file management). I've kept KAV on one computer and am trying AVG on the other.

User Rating: 10/10

Beats the competition! Best AV product out there!

Pros: Great scanning engine! Great User Interface! Finds the worst virus and spyware to remove and gets the job done!

Cons: Scanning times are a little slow because of how deep files are scanned. Way better than Norton or McAfee!

Review: Kaspersky has a good User Interface and does a tremendous job scanning for spyware, viruses, rootkits and trojans. I found this product to do the job of numerous other products when I was having a tough time getting rid of a virus/trojan. Beat out McAfee, Symantec(norton), TrendMicro, Computer Associates, Webroot, CounterSpy, AdAware, SpyDoctor and some other free spyware removers.
If you want to just buy one product and not have to worry about 5 different antivirus and antispyware tools on your PC, I would definately recommend this product! If you are use to buying Norton, do yourself a favor and buy Kaspersky instead. I never recommend anything but this to family and friends now.

User Rating: 9/10

Best AV I have ever used.

Pros: Fast Boot Times; Light on System Memory

Cons: Can't think of any

Review: I have been using Kaspersky since 2006, and this new one is awesome! I have used Panda, Norton, and Mcaffee, and I like this one the best. Panda used to be OK, but lately their detection rate has slipped. Norton is a monster--I will Never use it again! Resource hog, and regardless of what you think of Kaspersky, Norton is 10 times harder to use and to set up. Mcaffee is OK except it will almost double Window boot time, and it uses tons of RAM, and CPU cycles. Biggest plus for Kaspersky is it does hourly updates automatically! It will prevent a virus, and clean any existing virus from your system if it finds it when you first install it.

Not a big deal, but there are some cool skins that you can download and apply to kaspersky, some are pretty cool. I use my pc a lot, and do a lot of online gaming, and Kaspersky simply does its job. Period.

Why the high rating

Pros: none found

Cons: missed trojen

Review: i downloaded the trial version after seeing all the great reviews. (I usually use trend micro). i did not find the user face user friendly and it is processor heavy (using quad). i just downloaded trend pro and it caught 2 trojens and 3 spyware on the first scan. i would not recommend, epically at 60 bucks.

THE most THOROUGH Security Product I've Ever Used

Pros: Completely configurable down to the atomic level; Nothing gets by it

Cons: Will be difficult for anyone without a PC or Software background or very savvy user to easily configure or to understand alerts.

Review: I have the suite product from last year and I have to say it blows Trend, Norton, McAffee, AVG, and other out of the water. I've tried ALL of the others and have ALWAYS gotten viruses, malware, spyware, etc. despite the manufacturer's claims of protection. For the first time, with Kaspersky, I went an entire YEAR with NO problems!!! My husband is a VERY unsanitary web surfer - visiting almost every gutter site possible (most of the time unintentionally - he's pretty gullible) - and we STILL came through the year without a single scratch. On the down side, the alerts were very confusing to him. I've been in software development and PC support for the last 15 years - so interpreting the alerts was fairly straight forward for me (MOST of the time). For him, however, it was nearly Greek. One important thing to remember is that anytime you install a new software, Kaspersky will bomb you with alerts prompting you to allow or deny the execution. This includes internet add-ons, Active X controls, etc. If you know you've just installed something that you trust, you're usually good to approve the actions AFTER you read the alert and are sure that the action is associated with a trusted source. If you have NOT just installed something, that should be a big clue that the alert may truly be a cause for concern. My biggest recommendation on this is to ALWAYS read the alerts!!! If you do, you'll notice that most of them have the option to "not ask again", or "always allow", or "always deny" to prevent the same alert from popping up again and again. If you turn off learning mode, you can prevent most alerts, but then you won't really know what's happening either. All in all this software is about KNOWLEDGE. It GIVES you information on just about EVERYTHING happening on your computer and lets you control just about every piece of data being passed from one place to another. If you know what to DO with that information, this is THE absolute BEST tool you will find. If you DON'T know what to do with it, you may be better off going with a software that is more user-friendly. Just keep in mind that if you do, you may find yourself being attacked through one of the holes that that user-friendly software doesn't plug. I really hope that this helps some of you out there. I will be renewing my subscription this year.

The 30 Day Trial chased me off!!

Pros: It was free (used it for 2 days)

Cons: Choked up my computer, barred software apps & caused my harddrive fits!

Review: Never has my laptop acted like this after the installation! The hard drive was running rough and the entire computer was slow to a crawl.

I was using the 30 free trial and nothing seemed to be "right" since. I deleted the program and suddenly everything began running properly.

I used patience with it since I only had it on for two days but I was afraid something would be permanently damaged if I left it on any longer.

Back to the drawing board. But I'm glad this is off my computer. Whew!!

Very unhappy

Pros: none that I experienced

Cons: Caused conflicts with other programs

Review: First, I used the registered version ($75 for three computers). The registration key was difficult to use. When I finally was able to install the program, my fonts became larger and my computer erratic. I tried to get customer support but had to go through a complicated, frustrating process. When I finally got support (email only) the tech just blamed my problem on other possible issues other than kaspersky and blew me off. After waiting days to get real help I finally uninstalled kaspersky. I have now been able to correct the font problem.

No customer support

Pros: excellent antivirus protection (as long as you do not have problems )

Cons: Absolutelly NO customer support

Review: I bought Kaspersky antivirus 7 with a 2 year licence - valid until January 2008. In March 2007 I could not update to the last version and KIS stopped working. I could NOT get a solution to my problem. All I got was the same answer ever and ever again that my Key had expired ( which it has not). I think the russians do not understand well english. So, I saw myself forced to get aonther security suite. I got bitdefender: hope the customer service will be better.

AWFUL! After reading the review I decided to try Kaspersky over Norton. BIG MISTAKE!

Pros: None over other software

Cons: Resource Hog, Crashed system twice in 15 minutes, Slowed applications, Web Browsing Email to a crawl

Review: Installation wanted to run an update (29MB) on the install file. It took 30 minutes with a cable modem, tghen couldn't install the updated installation file. Had to rerun the installation. Install then was easy without the updated. Once installed, system rebooted but I couldn't open numerous web pages, and Kaspersky caused my system to stop, dump from Memory and restart. Applications opened noticeably slower with a big lag when clicked on. Web Browsing came to crawl, that is when I could open web pages. After the second Dump I just uninstalled this crappy expensivesoftware.

Best AV I have ever used

Pros: Easy Instll Many options Great Protection

Cons: Single license pricey but 3 license copy was reasonable

Ran well on all three. Easy configuration, love the options & fairly fast scans.

Big improvement over Norton, & AVG

Blue-Screen Hell and no 1-800 Number...

Pros: None at all

Cons: Blue screen, no immediately available support

Review: Holy piece of crap. Decided to switch to this based on reviews, and never even got past the initial install reboot. As soon as it rebooted BLUE SCREEN. It's a bad sign when the documentation that comes with the product has 4 FAQ's and one of them's about Blue Screens. Computer was totally hosed, no way other than safe mode to get it to work effectively, no 1-800 number to call for support, and only way to get help is through an e-mailed response sometime within the next two BUSINESS days.... That's IF you can get to the internet somehow/somewhere OTHER than your own PC!! Thank GOD I knew enough about computers to get around it on my own. No way the average user could get by this blue screen crap very easily. What a waste of an entire afternoon!!! BUYER BEWARE!
Updated
Just as a follow-up to my posting a MONTH ago... I still have yet to hear back from their tech "support".... after a month!!!! So much for 2-3 business days.... Glad I didn't wait to hear back from them.

Best antivirus I have used

Pros: Scanning speed is amazing, & it does not take up much resources during scanning. Updates are also really frequent, making sure it keeps your computer is kept clean.

Cons: Its quite perfect, nothing to mention.

Review: I have tried out many different antivirus software, & this one turned out to be the most effective. It does not make your computer sluggish, & you hardly notice its there. It will not bother you during work, & pop up notifications are rare.

It's easier to configure and less resource intensive!

Pros: Cheaper than a Norton 360 upgrade for 2 computers.

Cons: Not sure how it works with Bsafe Internet Security

Review: I have used Norton for the past 7 years and found it hard to configure and more expensive than other software suites. I tested Kaspersky throughly and find it to fill my personal needs cheaper and easier.

Here's a positive review

Pros: I like just about everything

Cons: Pricey! (Although I probably will purchase.)

Review: NOTE: I AM NOT IN ANY WAY AFFILIATED WITH KASPERSKY OR ANY OTHER SECURITY SOFTWARE COMPANY.

I just installed KAV 7 on a Dell Demension that was just upgraded to Vista. It has a 2.8 gig dual-core processer, and 2 gigs of ram. Vista Experience: 2.2 - due to having only 128 megs of ram in video card.

Installation: This product was installed with Comodo Firewall V3. (The absolute best free firewall!) If you plan on using this combination, you MUST install Kaspersky antivirus before installing Comodo. I would also advise turning off Comodo's "Defense Plus". My installation went smooth with no problems.

Scanning: Yes, it does take a little longer to scan than with some other products. To me, this is not even an issue, as I schedule my scans to occur while I am sleeping. (I don't know why these Kaspersky basher's who complain about scanning time, just don't do the same thing.)

Configuration: Configuring KAV may seem a little inimidating to new computer users, but the default settings are pretty good for those types. The only setting I really tweaked so far was to turn off the registry guard until I get some free time to go in and edit the settings for the registry keys. (The prompts for the registry guard tend to be a bit much at times.) Other than that, spending a few minutes going through the interface should make you realize that it's not so complicated.

Performance: Kaspersky doesn't seem to slow my system down. If it is, then I can't notice it and I am definitely not complaining.

I noticed a couple of reviews like "It will alter your system forever..." and ".....causes chkdsk errors...., and "...I can no longer create a disk image for backups." I'm not going to say these issues never happened, but I do question the actual intent of the reviewers. I will say this though: I have this software running flawlessly on a Vista upgraded machine with absolutely no problems. Running chkdsk on my machine is done quickly and with no errors. I also use Acronis True Image 10, and successfully created a backup image of my Vista drive in 13 minutes. (Again, not one problem.)

Summary: In my 4 days of using this software, I have not yet come across any issues that would cause me to uninstall it. And although there are a couple of very good free antivirus proggies out there, this one just gives me a lot more sense of security. That's what it's all about people. If the product you use is treating you well and makes you feel a little secure, then stick with it. I'm not telling anyone to try or buy this product. Just sharing my experience. Unless something unexpected happens within my trial period, I will be buying this.

To all of you who try to scare people off with your one-line reviews, you are not helping anyone who reads them. Your fear mongering tacticts are irresponsible at best.

Bad form for what may be a good product

Pros: Good reviews

Cons: Trialware annoying

Review: Impressed with the functioning of the software. Trial version was installed and tweaked. Then the purchasing reminders began. Constant. What is the point of this? The trial will time out eventually. I had every intention of purchasing the package but I wanted to live with it for a few days. A few hours later, Kaspersky was out and NOD32 was in.

fairly well

Pros: anti virus is best

Cons: anti spyware and system lag

Review: need to use less cpu because it lags and need to scan faster

Good AV that seems to be good at catching viruses and spyware.

Pros: Excellent AV update system and reliable product

Cons: Slower than I expected

Review: The product seems to work pretty well but while faster than alot of the bloated offerings like Norton, McAfee, and Zone Alarm, was still disappoitingly slow.

The product I ended up deciding to buy is Eset Smart Security Home Edition. It's is significantly faster than Kaspersky AV while also giving me a good straight forward firewall and EXCELLENT spam control.

Superb. Fast, easy to configure, reliable and accurate.

Pros: Easy setup, excellent reporting, set it and forget it.

Cons: None to date.

Review: This is a superb piece of software.

Up to last year we had been running with McAfee on our exchange server and about 100 client machines.

After seeing a comparitive review, I convinced my peers to let me switch us to Kaspersky. We haven't looked back.

Just as a test, I updated and scanned our main server with McAfee - it told me it was as clean as a whistle. I removed it and installed the relevant Kaspersky software and scanned again - 49 infections detected. That sold it to me.

We rolled out soon afterwards and have been running problem-free ever since. The software has a very small memory footprint, is fast in operation and can be configured easily (easier than McAfee and Norton) using the Admin Kit, which can again be broadcast without fuss. The reporting is excellent too.

You may be surprised at how many infections your old software missed when you re-scan your archives!

I would recommend this software to anyone, it has caused no 'problems' with CHKDSK and is definitely more like mercury than molasses.

Highly recommended.
Dave.

Needs to go back to the programmers.

Pros: None stand out.

Cons: Many. Poor configuring layout. Slows down my computer. Intrusive. Buggy.

Review: So far I'm not real happy with this product. It actually makes Norton look good (and I hate Norton). Very intrusive and hard to get features to SHUT OFF. It seems I have two choices: everything completely ON or turn the software completely OFF. I disable Web anti virus and yet it STILL interrupts constantly when I am browsing. Same with file anti virus and with proactive defense. This AV software also seems to slow down my computer even more than Norton did. This software was installed after I wiped my hard drive and did a CLEAN install of everything. At the moment I would NOT recommend this to anyone. I've been using computers since DOS 3.11 and using AV software for years, so I consider myself to be a very computer literate person. Bottom line, IMO this software is buggy and bordering on being junk.

Credit Card Nightmare

Pros: none at this time

Cons: German Bank

Review: Buying it direct from Kaspersky is a joke, because they don't have a US bank. They only have a German bank, so my credit card fraud department froze my card. So I called Kaspersky support and they told me to call my credit card company. Here is a clue, you want to do business in the US get a US bank. Making me get on the phone to my credit card company to purchase your product is not going to happen.

Hmmm on hold at my credit card company to remove the hold on my card, thanks Kaspersky.......

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE - EVER !!!!

Pros: None found - sofware won't install

Cons: Doesn't install, Cust Serv never replies, lost my money

Review: I have tried to install 7.0 several times, but it will not accept the Key Code and refers me to Customer Service, but they NEVER respond to my several emails. I will never deal with this company again, or with any company that doesn't support their products.

It is worse than if it doesn't work at all! Back to McAfee - at least they help you.

Wouldn't Install Correctly

Pros: Can't Answer

Cons: Wouldn't install correctly or run correctly

Review: Purchased two copies of this. One for the desktop and one for a new laptop. Couldn't get it to install correctly on the desktop. It couldn't create or access the f1l.sys file in the Drivers folder in system32. Tried numerous times to get it going even using safe mode. Did finally get it installed and working but then the email protection and internet protection wouldn't work correctly. Got frustrated after two hours and removed it and returned both copies to the store for a refund. Using the Avast free version until I decide on a new product but not Kaspersky's!

Holy SNAFU, Batman!

Pros: I can't come up with one

Cons: *Everything*

Review: The horrid GUI is a good starting point - it is entirely illogical and very hard to comprehend. The hard-to-swallow $60 price tag is also shocking. The fact that it uninstalls your paid-for apps without your consent is inexcusable [more about that, below].

I'd been told that Kaspersky's AV was a very good app, and also very strong. Well, beyond 5 hours after installing the trial version, I've concluded that this nightmare-ware must go. Unfortunately, I'm just now reading from others that Kaspersky AV will forever alter [corrupt?] your OS, even after removal.

My initial AV scan is now past its 5th hour, and it has only processed 34% of my hard drive [80gb, 50gb used]. Molasses in January can rocket past this thing. Just hours ago, my PC was fine, fast & furious. It's now slowed to a painful crawl and I fear I might not be able to recover from it, per the horror stories online.

To make matters worse, it automatically uninstalled my free AVG AV which it said it was going to do [no biggie], but what really grabs me by the short hairs is that my excellent *paid-for* Zone Alarm Suite is also gone, and without my knowledge or approval! o.O

My ZA suite, which I'm going to attempt to recover with a Windows System Restore shortly, would take only about 30 mins to scan my drive. I'm a firm believer that you need a few of each removal tool to stay entirely safe, but I implore you to run away from Kaspersky's AV as fast as your fingers can carry you.

The best Anti-Virus on the Market

Pros: The best Malware and Spyware Detection, strong firewall, updates released every 5 minutes,

Cons: A lot of pop-ups, Not the best Proactive Detection

Review: Kaspersky Really proves that it is the best Anti-Virus nowadays. No threat can pass the strict protection of Kaspesky. However, It may be difficult to use for Novices and it's pop ups are aggressive. But If you don't care about clickin Allow at every pop up, And you want to be safe from any threat in the web, Kaspersky is the right Anti virus for you.

Pros: easy install, doesn't hog space or slow pc,easy to use

Cons: initial full pc scan slow.but fast after that

Review: i have had norton ,mcaffee and avast.i din't like norton at all- not user friendly.i liked mcafee until last years suite then it was a space hog ,cumbersome and slowed my pc.avast worked well for a free program but i wanted virus, firewall spy ware and phishing protection .it was only virus .so i researched .kaspersky got mostly good reviews .i got a good deal for the internet 7 suite which includes virus ,firewall ,spam, spyware and phishing protecion.this runs very well ,was easy to install .it doesn't hog space and my 3 pcs are running better and faster .it can be configured basic to advanced .i am very happy with it.

use to be good

Pros: good protection

Cons: made my computer useless after all the recent updates

Review: this was the best until all the recent updates made this as useless as all the rest of the little group of tested antivirus software. it locked my computer down so tight that couldn't view web pages or run firefox. the firewall doesn't shutdown completely and it has to be uninstalled by a kaspersky uninstaller. sounds like nortons garbage products. all the a/v on the test list are terrible when it comes to you having control of your computer. i'm useing nod32/eset smart security now. i took it thru all the tests. now i can say with 1000% certainty, DO NOT READ THIS LIST OR TAKE ANY ADVICE FROM IT! nod32 has a 30 day trial, download it and see for yourself what it's like to have a computer actually run for once.

KASPERSKY for peice of mind

Pros: Two install opyions basic & advanced

Cons: NONE? INCREDIBLE

Review: BEST on the earth ! Basic install for novice users, and advanced for advned users with techie skills. GREAT KASPERSKY forum, many members can give advice & solve any problem you may have. If moving frpm another security suite, you must use that vendors removal tool after their uninstall, BEFORE installing KASPERSKY. (as with other vendors ) I have not had any problems with the advanced install, although had a few questions that the forun GURUs answered. GREAT security all around, anti spam works great, also has parental control for those who need it. HOURLY updates! Have used others, they give LESS protection. GREAT privacy control, etc; you cannot get more from others IMPRESSIVE. Cost more BOT generally you get what you pay for. KASPERSKY FOREVER !!!

Great Product Top of the Line

Pros: Deep Scans, Free to Try 30 days full version, Tons of protection

Cons: Updates often, can be annoying, but you can turn it off or configure it easily

Review: I downloaded this product because I did a search; I typed in the best antivirus programs in the world!!! I kept coming up with the same 3 products; Kaspersky, Norton and either Macfee or Bit Defender. So they all have a 30 days free trial, but some only scan, they dont remove the threats. Kaspersky; You get the FULL 100% program for 30 days, if you like it, keep it, if not get rid of it. As for the comments its hard to get rid of, no its not. You run you registry scanner and check over your files manually and then reboot, disc clean up too. Problem solved if you want to ever get rid of it, I mean its SUPER. I can surf online, check my email, talk on IM, all this while its running a full system scan too!!! Tons of protection, 24/7 full online chat live help or toll free number. You name it, this program does it or has it then. I am very pleased with this and I am going to purchase the license key then soon. I am still using it for free now and its awesome. Uses little system resources, the whole program is only about 33MB then compared to 63MB from Norton, and a wopping 92MB from Spyware/Virus Doctor!!! I had that, and that is a SUPER HARD program to get rid of for sure. I had to really go into my deep files to remove all of that program!!! The free spyware doctor is fine, but their antivirus program there is new. Stay away from that. Kaspersky, what can I say, download it for 30 days, its totally 100% functionable, and if you remove it and have any problems; They will back you 100% in getting it off your PC then, they guarantee that on their website then!!! I love it, a full system scan runs about 1 1/2 hours then, but you dont even know its running. Then isnt even a desktop icon, no need, it starts up when you PC starts up, and it starts scanning then, you dont even know its running, unless it finds something wrong, then it will either tell you when it finds the one thing like Norton does, or you can set it to wait and tell you when its completely finished!!! Very easy to set up, easy to use, many functions and setting, all self explanatory, any questions, goto their website, live chat, that takes care of that then 1,2,3. Tell me another program that you have live support for FREE, even in your 30 day period, you get the LIVE SUPPORT!!! Great Program, better than Norton because its half the size and uses only 3/4 of the Virtual Memory then. 9 out of 10 for me. Thanks and Take Care Everyone. The Choice is yours clearly, I am not advertising, just giving my opinion and I have tried over 10 antivirus programs in two years now. I am done looking now!!!

Talkative; for experts only!

Pros: Lots of options. Unless you turn them off, you will be warned before an intruder is allowed in

Cons: No or little help available about best practices. Far too sensitive by default.

Review: For the average Windows and DLL guru, this is a great find. It tells you exactly when software is operating outside specifications and what it's doing to ensure your data's security and to ensure nothing sneaks in without you knowing! Unfortunately in practice, most of us would rather get work done with our computers and not have to look up every alert. ...and turning off the right alerts is hard too!

one of the best in the market

Pros: UI, configuration options, was one of the first to offer support for vista

Cons: kaspersky internet security is much usefull.

Review: Good product overall. Although nowaday anybody need more than an anti-virus. Therefore KIS is more recommended

Abysmal - install written by ex-Vista employees(?)

Pros: cheap but doesn't work

Cons: is incomatible with firewall

Review: FAQ's on Kaspersky mention, if you previously had a Symantec(Norton) product, yo have to download a special tool from symantec to uninstall everyhing
- during install, it detects (zonealarm) firewall and states IT is incompatible and must be removed
- firewalls perform separate function from anti-virus..they should NOT be incompatible
- does NOT detect previous installation, previously removed, of other anti-virus products (Norton SystemWorks with AV)
- during install, hamgs _ i've been trying to install the effin thing for three (3) hours now
- package contents say if I open sealed CD, and do NOT agree to eula (provided in booklet) I can get no refund
- had read EULA in booklet before trying to install, agreed with EULA, agreed during install...biut it WILL NOT EFFING INSTALL!!!
- I demand a refund or successfull install
_ ia have re-installed Zone Alarm to have SOME protection while this effin product tries to install successfully!!

- As a side note: it has also, apparently, disable my active desktop... white background, not the wallpaper I normally have

Abysmal Customer Service

Pros: None Identified

Cons: Abysmal Customer Service

Review: I have tried to get a copy of the anti-Virus 7 from the Kaspersky web site. The sign up box for a free trial has not been functioning for the last month. My email, basically begging to use the product has been ignored. This seems like a red flag for a product that has CNET's Editor's Choice.

Best AV there Is Close to perfect

Pros: Amazing Virus Detection & Disinfection

Cons: scan speed slower than nod32

Review: Best Antivirus of 2007. Light on system resources and fast scanning speed than any av products except for nod32. Amazing Fast hourly updates. Great Protection, does not lag computer when gaming.

No Problem Here

Pros: Easy Install Doesn't Hog System Resources

Cons: No Right Click To Disable

Review: I really like the software so far, did a complete uninstall of Norton as was suggested and even ran CCleaner to tidy up my registry after which I defragged and did a complete install and it's been two days and absolutely no problem! And yes it does initially take a long time for the first few scans but I'm told after that it speeds up considerably, Kaspersky also gives you the potion to just scan recently changed files. One other thing I don't particularly like is the little K that pulses every time you load a web page so for now I just keep it hidden, just right click on task bar click properties and go to customize. I actually had Norton prior to Kaspersky and after installing it found two virus that Norton apparently missed. Well so far so good I give it a 9

Great Protection, Great Price (if you buy OEM)

Pros: Excellent protection, small memory footprint, I paid $13 CAD

Cons: Startup is slower than w/ most AVs, after upgrading to KIS 7.0, I can no longer browse computers on my network even w/ firewall off ?

Review: What they did right: Excellent detection rates, scans internet traffic, hourly updates, small memory footprint, scan time estimates, OEM cost (I got KIS 6.0 for $13 CAD, free upgrade to KIS 7.0 when it came out), the new parental controls are excellent.

What they did wrong: Startup time takes longer than most AVs, scans take a while, since upgrading to KIS 7.0, I can no longer browse my network although I can enter the address of the desired computer and still access all the shared files (which is fine w/ me, but I'm sure the average user would find this quite frustrating).

What is okay but could use improvement: Mediocre protection against unknown malware according to most 3rd party tests (though it is pretty rare considering the hourly updates and 0-2 hour response time), software should be to Disinfect and Delete if Disinfection Fails by default IMO

Conclusion: Overall, I'm very happy w/ Kaspersky even though there are a few minor annoyances that I can live with. It's good to know that I can allow my GF and children onto my computer and know they're not going to be able to wreak havoc on it. Also, outside of the initial startup, the performance impact is minimal.
Updated
I forgot to add that I have KIS 7.0 installed on all 3 of my desktop PCs as well as my laptop.

can not recommend this software

Pros: see opinion

Cons: see opinion

Review: after cnet review downloaded it to try it. tried to install 3 times all three times following error message came up "ERROR 1304.ERROR WRITING TO FILE C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\KL1.SYS VERIFY THAT YOU HAVE ACCESS TO THAT FOLDER". I am running windows 2000 SP4 all updates installed.
How can i try a product that does not install. before install KAVG i shut down zonealarm, uninstalled grisoft and all user settings, ran REGSEEKER to clean up the uninstall then removed grisoft folder before install i even unistalled spybot, adaware and grisoft anti spyware, KAVG would not install.
Re-installed everything then reinstalled grisoft AVG it installed like a dream, no problems whatsoever. KUDOS TO GRISOFT for giving people protection for their data and free to boot. i will recommend grisoft.

Stay Away!

Pros: easy to download

Cons: slower than slow

Review: For over 2 months now I have been emailing customer support trying to find some solution to the problem with Kapersky. It boggs down my system so significantly that I am able to complete no operation without waiting at least 5 minutes and often times up to 15 minutes.
Tech support is slow and only via email. My system gets slower by the day The slow down did not happen immediately after I purchased the product, but has been slowing down little by little. I am now at the point that I'm considering going back to Norton, which was slow, but nothing like Kapersky.

SO MANY PROBLEMS! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

Pros: there are none

Cons: slowed system down, changed system, could not view home network, tech support

Review: This is the worst software installation I have ever put on my computer. From network availability going away to tremendously slowing down my system. I installed it on 3 of my computers (all different vendors) and all 3 slowed to a crawl. It used so much system resources. And to top it off, tech support stinks - all done by email. I am still waiting 2 weeks for a response to my tech question. I am going to look for something else.

Pros: dont cost many resources, defends agianst newstet treaths and has very good support

Cons: this is a hard one, but this would be that it cant co-operate with thunderbird

Review: I'm now using kaspersky 3 years, and my expirience is very good, we haven't got infected since the use of kaspersky
en when unistalling kaspersky i've tested if there would be something the unistaller of kaspersky left behind, that was nothing
(this was to update to an newer version)
support was always very nice to me, for instance, next to comodo we always have used kaspersky (till we bought KIS) but, kaspersky installer said that it couldn't work with comodo
and I should unistall it
called support and they told me how to bypass this check
when people have problems or questions I can see that they are very nice handled on the support forum (I mostly visit the dutch support forum, but the english one does there job very good for what I could see)
Kaspersky is a great product, it is now and will always be

Pros: Just about everything!

Cons: None so far!

Review: I?m the first to admit that I may not be as computer savvy as many of you, but I know what works for me. I?ve tried several others for a comparison and think I?ll stay with Kaspersky (at least for now). Nothing out there is perfect, so the best I give them is strong 8!

Pros: Never got to install it.

Cons: Incompatible with Comodo Firewall Pro.

Anti virus software

Pros: I trust it. easy to configure. looks great, work even better!

Cons: A bit pricey .

Review: I have used both NOD32 and Kaspersky.
Nothing is more frustrating that scanning your hard drive and having your AV go wild telling you that you it has discovered corrupt file, yet giving you only the option to A)continue on
B)skip the file or C) stop the scan.
It is pretty much up to you to do take care of things manually.
You see, NOD 32 does not deal with Zip files.

It did miss 1 important virus and a couple of Trojans that used to slow down my PC something crazy.
Kaspersky takes care of all my PC problems.
You have to learn to configure it proper. It does not take a rocket scientist to tweak Kaspersky.
I do not use the web scan nor the proactive defense,(my firewall does that part)
Web scanning tends to slow down your browsing speed, but it's up to the individual, I guess.
I just feel good seeing the red K on the bottoem right on my PC , an dI can't wait for the next beta version to come up.
Kaspersky might even be better than Bit defender. It is better than Esset's software, and that it the sum of my experiences with both programs.

Pros: Uses less resources than norton

Cons: Hard to configure, slow scans

"Best AV Software I've Ever Owned!"

Pros: User Friendly, Outstanding Virus Detection

Cons: None to mention

Review: I don't understand why everyone is "bashing" this program. I think if people were more knowledgeable about AV and their computer, there wouldn't be so many complaints. I build computers and have used the entire System Mechanics Suite for years. I have not had a problem to date. As a matter of fact, Kaspersky AV and SM has saved my computer from many harmful computer bugs.

Most computers come with an AV pre installed. This causes all types of problems when trying to install this program. You MUST completely uninstall any exists AV programs BEFORE trying to install this. That includes any system suite software i.e. Norton's System Works. Those programs will cause resource conflicts thus causing a problem with Kaspersky install and functionality. Additionally, if your computer is already corrupt, this program will not work well. You must use your OEM disk i.e. Windows XP or Vista, to fix corrupt system files and then install this program.

I love this program and have never experienced a problem or system slow down. Maybe it's because I know what I am doing :) Buy it.... you won't be disappointed.

Great AntiVirus Program

Pros: Fast updates, does not slow system down

Cons: No built in firewall included

Review: I recently upgrated Daspersky V6.0 to V7.0 and found both versions superior to the prior antivirus program I was using (PC-Cillin). In fact I switched because PC-Cilling 2007 (at least the early versions) was absolutely horrible.

Kaspersky offers total protection for the average home user and plays well with the windows firewall. Kaspersky; as advertised, does not hog system resources and version 7 has a great new interface which is incredibly easy to navigate.

To summarize, I highly recommend Kaspersky Antivirus.
Updated
Kaspersky 7 antivirus was easy to install and works well with the windows xp firewall. Updates are often (every hour) but usually complete in less than 3 minutes even on a slow connection (dialup).

Layout is clear and easy to use and; except for a slightly longer boot, does not slow my system down.

I would highly recommend this product.

Does not hog resources or cause problems

Pros: works like it is supposed to and udpdates easily. You amost do not know it is there.

Cons: none that I can see

Review: Buy the internet suite with the anti-virus and fire wall. I replaced Norton and Mcafee with the o6 version. None of their problems happened again. I recommend it to all my friends. You can also load it on a second computer. One full year without a problem is a first.

Pros: Hmm.. GOod Performance! Outstanding!

Cons: Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 can be slightly more expensive than the competition, and firewall protection is missing.

Let's evaluate first "your" NORTON® anti-virus..

They said Norton Antivirus is the "leader" in the security market, why?? because Norton is the most common pre-installed antivirus software in the most Computer Store in U.S, and "for Newbies" user, they don't have any knowledge about those security. Hmm.. Performance??.. Never mind.. HOG for short.. drain resources.. 100%! (Windows XP Service Pack 2, 3.0Ghz P4, 2MB RAM).. And... New UI of Norton?? Black + Orange?? Strange.. HALLOWEEN?? LOL..

try this.. Download
DFK Threat Simulator version 2 (DFKTSv2).

at

http://www.morgud.com/interests/security/dfk-threat-simulator-v2.asp

Hmmm.. Why is that it can bypass NORTON Antivirus??.. No blockage?? Poor.. LOL

Then try it with KASPERSKY.. I'm sure..
BLOCK instantly..

AND! you said :

"nd whats with all those damn alerts. It even prompts me to ALLOW/BLOCK when it detects a VIRUS!! Very sad."

Hey man!, you can turn it OFF.. please find it in the OPTION menu.. >.<

"Still, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 provides the most complete antivirus production on the market today" - and how did he come to this conclusion ? Did he test at all?"

Hmmm.. Just scan all the antivirus TEST in yahoo, or in google.. and you will see..

"NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER. Mr. Varmosi, get your act together and stop recommending crap."

Man, Most of the user of Kaspersky are HAPPY..

KASPERSKY user ratings: 6.4
NORTON (2007) user ratings: 3.6

Btw, I'm a Antivirus Software Critict..
Peace.. If you are happy in NORTON, so be it.. but don't directly conclude, if you don't have enough basis.. I tested all antivirus.. And.. Surely.. NORTON is Good, but a performance HOG.. THANK's..

"A good antivirus software is not depends on how famous it is, but how it positively works on actuall performances"..

CRAP AND I MEAN CRAP

Pros: READ ABOVE

Cons: READ ABOVE ABOVE

Review: This is the worst piece of **** I have ever had the unfortunate displeasure to come across. Killed 2 machines and both had to have a clean install after this 8 out of 10 rated software was installed. Kills windows and tho only thing that works on your computer after you install this is your power button. STAY AWAY

Excellent Product

Pros: Highly effective for virus, malware

Cons: Troubleshooting is difficult

Review: The best antivirus I have ever used.

Worth buying!

Pros: Good, fast AV detection, easy to customize, peer2peer friendly

Cons: Not available for pda

Review: I have used many AVs; mcafee, norton, AVG and this is bar far the best so far.

It may befine, butthere is better - and free!

Pros: It is a good anti-virus program

Cons: It's not Free.

Review: I have yet to find anything that works s well as AVG Anti-Virus. it is a free download, with free updates. Is it my only one - no, but the others I have tried never kept up with AVG.

can you say 'choke' for outlook users too?

Pros: none i can think of

Cons: does not allow a user to send an attachment

Review: i had this installed for nearly a month. was not able to send attachments no matter how small AND could not even append my signature with a picture at all. mail would not send. re-installed everything. finally uninstalled it and put norton (oh god) on and its been just fine. stay away.

been there,done that

Pros: reasonably effective

Cons: difficult to manipulate

Review: i had Kaspersky as part of System Mechanic 6 Pro last year, after several yrs. of Norton System Works. i was soon disallusioned about SMS's high rating and then i discovered that it's written by Russian technology-that's like putting the wolf in charge of guarding the hen house. no thank you,i went back to Norton this yr..

Review: like Norton this product is absolute crap false positives missed virus and like Norton almost guaranteed to screw up your install, only question I have is how much are they paying for this advert!

Bought 2 licences for the suite...it's that great!

Pros: Running suite on XP and Vista--no problems; email filter lets me review my email before I download it; forums give fast, knowledgeable respone to questions with easy-to-follow instructions

Cons: A little difficult to contact tech support (no real-time chat), but forums offered quick response to questions

Review: I was struggling with the system resources being gobbled up by the suite provided by my ISP. Based partly on C-Net's reviews, I purchased the Kaspersky Internet Suite (includes the Antivirus). When I bought it, it was 6.0 and the only time I have had a problem (ended up being a game I was running that was conflicting), I just upgraded to 7.0 (for free) and the problem was resolved. I found it very easy to set up using recommended settings, and it works like a charm. I now run the Suite on both an XP desktop and a Vista laptop--no problems at all.

I did have a little difficulty finding "tech support" when I had the problem with the game freezing, but asked a question in one of the forums and got a response almost immediately with clear instructions on how to uninstall 6.0 and upgrade to 7.0. Problem solved.

I love the email filter (I use Outlook) which allows me to delete items from my mail server before I even download. Also, although some items end up in spam, one click moves them back to the inbox.

Overall, Kasperspy is my choice. Doesn't slow down my system or seem to require as much RAM. I also think the frequent virus definition updates are a plus, and I read that Kaspersky outperforms others in finding "undefined" viruses.

One note, I do think it's important, for smooth running, to *completely* remove all other antivirus/security programs before installing. Many of the vendors have removal tools on their websites, and that's how I removed the one that came with my laptop (along with a registry cleaner) before installing Kaspersky.

May be great but what a monster to configure

Pros: Hard to penetrate

Cons: Configuring / using this = splitting the atom for the average guy

Review: I bought this based on CNET's reviews which I generally find to be helpful. I also recommended it to my clients. What a mistake. The configuration process which seemed simple when set up causes beeps and warning for nor reason at all. Training it is worse than training a puppy. It stopped things that had been approved over and over again and yet passed similar items that - while not dangerous - had the same characteristics. It slowed my primary office machine significantly during routine tasks. In the end I ripped it out and replaced it for my clients free of charge. Techno wizards might want to wade through it but the average guy won't like it. I've been in the field 20 years or so and understand the need for safety. Safety isn't an asset when you can do your routine stuff without seeing the machine slow down and annoyance levels rise.

Good, but there is better! ;)

Pros: Nice interface.

Cons: Resource hog

Review: I like the new interface, but not very resource friendly. I'll stay with NOD32 2.7; but version 3.0 is due out soon with a totally new interface plus features. IMHO... NOD32 is the best AV available!

Cryptic Alerts, hard-disk corruptions, crappy drive-by protection..stay away

Pros: Its has a Green box

Cons: Where do I start ?

Review: I installed this product and have had nothing but problems - slow browsing, chkdsk issues with what appear to be file system corruption issues - VERY SERIOUS PROBLEMS. Stay away from this product. Get NAV2008 instead.

Did the editor really review this product - there seems to be nothing of any value in this review and probably one of the more ridiculous ones I've seen.

"feels complete as a standalone product and not, like Norton Antivirus 2008, a cog in larger family of products" - what the? It "feels" complete? Talk about objective reviewing.

"Once again, Kaspersky requires considerably less disk space than Norton" - Who cares about diskspace. Is this guy kidding me. Looks like he couldn't find anything bad with Norton that he had to nitpick.

"Still, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 provides the most complete antivirus production on the market today" - and how did he come to this conclusion ? Did he test at all ?

"Also, unlike Norton's morbid, black border, we like the open, bright, and colorful interface of Kaspersky that is skinnable to suite your own tastes. " - it gets more ridiculous. Yeah your average user is spending their time skinning their security product.. Suuuuurreee.

"Kaspersky offers antirootkit protection as well" - but does it work. I had a Rustok infection a while back with KIS7 and after "cleaning" my PC I ended up with an infinite blue screen loop..

"Unlike Norton, Kaspersky can, by default, scan only recently changed files, greatly shortening the overall scan time considerably." - This feature has ZERO value when the definitions are changing hourly as Kaspersky claims. As soon as the defs change they end up rescanning ALL files.

"There are also active user forums" - have you seen their server lately. The performance is pathetic.

And whats with all those damn alerts. It even prompts me to ALLOW/BLOCK when it detects a VIRUS!! Very sad.

NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER. Mr. Varmosi, get your act together and stop recommending crap.

Works Great for me.. Runs smooth

Pros: Excellent detection Rate, Scan times are good

Cons: There is the chkdsk prob that some have (note me).

Review: Best detection rate I know.. I like the rootkit scanner as well.. On a negative note, there have been some who have experienced slowdowns with Chkdsk.. I have not

WARNING! THIS AV FOREVER ALTERS YOUR SYSTEM!

Pros: Detection

Cons: Screws up CHKDSK and other damage. Slow as molasses

Review: Please, for the love of God, don't go near this program! Here is a link to a thread you really need to read before you should even THINK of installing anything Kaspersky!

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r18608452-Kaspersky-You-lost-me-at-ISwift

This program installs "Object Identifiers" that even Microsoft disapproved of! Unless you imaged your drive THERE IS NO SAFE WAY AS OF THIS WRITING TO REMOVE THESE Identifiers! Worse, is KAV's Attitude! They barely wanted to acknowledge the issue! Please DO NOT INSTALL THIS HORRIBLE PROGRAM!

YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!

Does not work with Comodo Firewall

Pros: Great at updates

Cons: Hungy on resources but not as bad as Norton 360

Review: I have been with Kaspersky for longer than I can remember. This product looks great and works well for me but it does not get along with Comodo Firewall and tries to un-install it.

User Rating: 5/10

bad heuristics-NOD32/Avira a better choice

Pros: fast updates

Cons: poor heuristics

Review: Kaspersky does well after the fact and updates known malware definitions faster than anyone. However, a greater threat to many users is unknown viruses and variants. If you look at AV-Comparatives, you will see that Kaspersky in the most recent Retrospective/Proactive test detected only 9% of unseen samples. This is right near the bottom of the list as compared to 16 others. You are much better off with NOD32 or Avira-that have powerful heuristics.

Too many obscure warning messages

Pros: I assume it works well; the reviews say it does.

Cons: Too many decisions for the user to make w/o enough info to make them

Review: This is only an initial impression, but it is one which has caused me to start trying the trialware of several other programs rather than plunging ahead and buying the highly recommended Kaspersky 7.

My problem is that the program sends out innumerable messages about 'intrusions' and 'integrity violations' which don't give any useful information to allow the user to make a decision whether to Allow or Block.

It's a bit like IE's action of making you click several times to download a file. The first time it happens, it seems like a warning ('are you sure you want to do this?' kind of thing). But before long the 'warning' is ignored and the click occurs automatically.

I don't need extra clicks in my life, when they just give pseudo reassurance that I've got more choices or more safety. If a program is asking me to make a decision, it should provide enough information for me to make it properly.

It's similar to going to the doctor: I don't want to be told "Well this medicine has a 12.7% chance of making your dangle fall off, but it will clear up your sinuses. Do you want to take it?"

User Rating: 9/10

Exellent and fully user-definable

Pros: I just love how I have a say if I want to allow or deny something. UNLIKE BitDefender and NOD32. And it's beautiful

Cons: It can be a little more reasource hogging at times then lets say, Eset's NOD32

Review: It's one of the best looking anti-viruses there is. I hated in BitDefender and NOD32 that it would delete something that I KNOW not to be a virus or trojan. In Kaspersky, I get to choose what to do. Plus I love the registry protection.

User Rating: 5/10

8.0 out of 10

Pros: yes it's a good antivirus but not the best

Cons: the interface is not so user friendly

Review: BitDefender is the best.
I choose BitDefender Total Security 2008 as beeing the best security software in the world. You have a good product with many features, online support 24/7...

Nothing Comes Close!

Pros: You name it

Cons: None that I know of

Review: The best, and I mean the BEST anti-virus program I've come across yet. Compared against McAfee, Norton, Trend Micro and more, Kaspersky found viruses that every other program missed. Great user interface and functionality, too. You can't go wrong.

User Rating: 8/10

Works Great In The Background

Pros: Doesn't bog my machine down while it's working - very unobtrusive

Cons: Seems rather slow on the scans.

Review: I wanted something that didn't take over my computer like McAfee and Norton - so far this one isn't hogging all of my memory while running. I really like that.

Plus it isn't flashing or popping up 5000 messages constantly. I appreciate the fact that I know it's there and working QUIETLY in the background.

Before I went to get a new virus protection (hated Trend) I came to CNET to see what they had to say about the various antiviruses. I respect their opinions. Thanks all, you didn't let me down!

User Rating: 9/10

Simply the best product I've tried to date

Pros: Thorough and cleaned up my drives!

Cons: Only using the free version, so I don't know how the full version works yet

Review: My computer had become infected with all sorts of junk. I had the paid anti spy/anti virus from my ISP, and it sucked worse than the free version that I had. I tried some other products, and they were horrible too. And my computer got worse. I finally came here to CNet and read up on the products, and decided to give Kaspersky a try.

I downloaded the trial of this program, dumped my other stuff and let the scan begin. Yes, the scan took about three hours, but it was WELL WORTH THE EFFORT! Not only is my computer now up and running the way it was intended to do, but the protection can't be beat. It also recognized left over stuff from the Ad-Aware program that was on my computer AS A VIRUS. And I had already uninstalled that product...

I will recommend this product to anyone. It saved me from having to take my tower to the geeks to get it fixed...I can't wait to get the paid, full version.

Froze My Computer and Killed It

Pros: Looks like its working

Cons: Every page I open, it questions??

Review: I just bought this product last night, and after I installed it, my computer is still having a lot of problems freezing. I went in and wiped out some old programs, and it didn't help. Browser windows are popping up on their own, now, which is a new problem. And the Anti-Virus software alerts me every time I log onto the internet, about every page I visit. Not sure if this is how its supposed to be working, but I paid a lot of money for it to not work.

User Rating: 7/10

good product but SLOOOWWWW scans

Pros: Well done interface, communication about product status

Cons: VERY slow full system scan

Review: There are several well thought out aspects of this program. The interface is very good (although there is still room for improvement) and the icon in the system tray unobtrusively communicates almost everything the program is doing which is a very nice touch. Almost every aspect of this product feels professionally done and finished. The frequent virus updates (about every 2 hours) are nice, although I wonder if this is more of a gimmick than providing real value. The major downside is the extremely slow system "on-demand" scanning. Kaspersky takes about 1.5 hours to scan 40 GB, where NOD32 takes half that without sacrificing system performance. Given the expense of Kaspersky, scanning should be much faster.

Good so far

Pros: It's not Norton, Mcafee or Zone Alarm

Cons: slow anti-virus

Review: Had it for a week so far. Easy installation, and works really well. No system hang-ups yet, and doesn't seem to slow things down as much as Norton or McAfee. Also, unlike Zone Alarm, it lets me access my hotmail. So far this is the best package I've used. You need to adjust the Firewall setting to training mode for it to be effective. The only gripe so far is that the virus check takes forever to run, but I don't mind that too much, it makes me feel like it might actually be doing something.

User Rating: 3/10

Unable to protect against browser exploits

Pros: Fast reponse time but not fast enough

Cons: Machine is easily infected by drive-by download sites

Review: KIS7 and all previous versions are easily infected by sites that use encrypted/obfuscated drive-by downloads. KL tries to add signatures quickly, but its too late. Dont buy this unless you want your machine to get infected, wait for the new NIS2008 which has enhanced browser protection. Should be out last week of Aug 07.
Updated
For those of you wondering that - oh I dont need drive-by download protection because I patch Microsoft Windows, you are wrong. All the new attacks are now in non-Microsoft software e.g. Yahoo WebCam, Yahoo Widgets, NCTAudio, QuickTime, Flash. So unless you are 100% you have patched EVERY SINGLE software on your machine, its just a matter of time before your machine will be infected if you are running KAV7 (or even KIS7).
