Symantec is offering an antispyware solution that's decidedly different from its competition. Rather than release a standalone antispyware application, as McAfee and others have, Symantec has bundled its new antispyware technology entirely within its existing Norton Internet Security (NIS) suite, calling it the Norton Internet Security 2005 Antispyware Edition (beta). Symantec believes that spyware is not a new problem, but a variation of malicious code already available on the Internet. In Symantec's opinion, spyware deserves to be treated more like computer viruses than something different and new.

Symantec incorporates its new antispyware technology seamlessly into the existing look and feel of its popular Norton Internet Security 2005 suite.

Upside: By taking the stance that there's a very thin line between malicious virus code and malicious spyware, Symantec created its antispyware scanning engine similar to the one used within its Norton AntiVirus app. But unlike the antivirus scanner, which automatically quarantines viruses without user input, the Norton antispyware scanner informs you of all suspected instances of spyware. For each, Symantec recommends action but ultimately leaves the decision of whether to quarantine a questionable app up to you. If you're uncertain about what to do, Symantec further defines each threat using one or more of the following criteria: performance impact, privacy impact, ease of removal, stealth installation, and prevalence. For example, if you're a gamer and you're concerned about system speed, you might want to remove all suspected spyware that has an adverse performance impact.

Downside: Unfortunately, Norton Internet Security 2005 suite is a resource hog, and the addition of a new antispyware scanning engine within Norton Internet Security 2005 Antispyware Edition (beta) is bound to slow older PCs. Also, there are already many excellent and free antispyware alternatives, such as Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-aware SE Personal Edition, and Microsoft Antispyware (beta). Norton Internet Security 2005 Antispyware Edition is currently a public beta available for download; however, the final, retail version, expected later this summer, should sell for about $70 and requires an annual update subscription fee of about $20.

Outlook: Norton Internet Security is perhaps the most popular Internet security suite on the market, so widespread adoption is almost guaranteed. This will put added pressure on the paid third-party apps to either align with a competing security company or rethink their business model entirely. It will not, however, mean the demise of the free alternatives, which you should continue using since no single antispyware app alone removes everything. Check back this summer for a review of the final Norton release.

Not worth putting on a computer

Pros: NONE that I found

Cons: Too many to list

Review: The program eats up too much memory, spyware program is worthless it finds wothing, free programs are a lot better. The worst support of any program

Absoultly horable.

Pros: Somewhat sucure. Easy for the tecnologicly retarded. No Afence ment.

Cons: Dosnt work with steam or any other games. Eats ram and cpu.

Review: DO NOT GET NORTON. PERIOD.

If you use Microsoft Outlook, stay away from this product!

Pros: Many features integrated into one.

Cons: Horrible customer service, does NOT interact well with Microsoft Outlook.

Review: If you use Microsoft Outlook stay away from this product. The "antispam" tool is worthless; at this price, you want all the pieces to work. You cannot teach the antispam tool, the next time an e-mail comes from someone, it will still go to your antispam folder even if you've added it to the do not block list. Microsoft Outlook will repeatedly lock up as a program (Norton) tries to access your addresses. "I-Hate-Spam" works a lot better. I wish I had just stuck with it. Now, I have to send this product back to Symantec and wait six to eight weeks to hopefully receive a refund.

norton anti-virus sucks

Pros: NONE - zero

Cons: buy anything but symantec

Review: I installed per Symantec's instructions and it would not update properly. after listening to one hours worth of suggestions from symantec's indian customer service representative (CSR) (the CSR said the problem was my internet service provider), i called the sales department to complain/ they "fast tracked" me to another CSR from India who told me to uninstall and re-install NAV 2005. after not being able to uninstall program in windows, I was GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS to uninstall. the uninstall, however, deleted key registry keys which now require me to re-install windows XP on my computer. Simply put, FORGET SYMANTEC PRODUCTS UNLESS YOU CAN FORFEIT MANY DOLLARS IN REINSTALLATION TIME. SYMANTEC WOULD RATHER SEND YOU TO INDIA THAN FIX THEIR DEFECTIVE PRODUCT. VALUE YOUR DOLLAR AND BUY SOME OTHER ANTI-VIRUS PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!! I HOPE THEY SUBPOENA ME SO I CAN TESTIFY UNDER OATH ABOUT HOW THEIR PRODUCT SUCKS AND THEY DEFLECT THEIR PROBLEM TO HARD WORKING PERSONS SEVERAL THOUSAND MILES AWAY FROM THE UNITED STATES!!!

Months of Frustration to eventually uninstall.

Pros: No pros to report whatsoever

Cons: Slow, cumbersome, network un-friendly, a waste.

Review: This program is only good for taking out with your friends and practicing your skeet shooting. You can't get onto networks without disabling, uninstalling, and developing a migraine headache. There's got to be something better out there.

User Rating: 10/10

Works without problem if installed and configured properly

Pros: Comes as a complete suite that I use

Cons: Can bring slow/old computers down

Review: It's a must have if you got a fairly decent computer and take security a must.

Worst product ever by Norton !

Pros: You will not find one.....I promise

Cons: Completely froze my machine

Review: Pls do not try this product even if you were to get this for free. It comletely took over my computer and went into a hang. It will not uninstall easily no wonder Norton has a special utility on their website for uninstalling this SW.

Works "Ok" if Pre-Loaded by Computer Manufacturer

Pros: The Anti-Virus Feature is the best part of the whole package.

Cons: Slows Down System Log-In - - "Boot Up" Time.

Review: Not a bad Internet Security Suite. I read all the "Horror Stories" about Norton NIS 2005 on C-Net. This Security Suite works best if it's pre-loaded by a computer manufacturer (It was pre-loaded by Dell on my Inspiron XPS2). The Firewall feature is "ok". The anti-virus feature is the best part of the whole package. The new Spyware feature works well. I would recommend also having Adaware SE and Spybot Search & Destroy programs in addition to the one supplied by Norton. The "OutBreak Alert" feature is totally useless. And; your start up time will be longer with this security suite.

Overall, this security suite is not bad. It still doesn't beat Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite 5.5 though.

Still the leader.

Pros: Offers Protection to those that know how to use it.

Cons: I haven't discovered any cons for now and don't think i will.

Review: Don't hate on Norton Internet Security 2005 because your computer has problems with it. Its like a Luxury Car, take care of it and it will take care of you. I have never had problems since i started using norton internet security in 2003 and kepp updating by buying their newer versions, i've been using the 2005 version for quite a while now and it has not slowed down my computer at all. First of all, its very hard to protect a very slow and malnourished computer. I am not a total expert but my computer knowledge is good enough to distinguish the difference between a good and bad software.

User Rating: 9/10

works real good had it for 10 years

Pros: nothing wrong

Cons: nothing wrong

Review: works excellant i had it for 10 years

User Rating: 1/10

Pathetic, is the only word.

Pros: On new versions? I can think of none.

Cons: Bulky, slow, plants itself into registery and diffuclt to get rid off. The mother-in-law of software!

Review: It seems that Norton has become a marketing company that happens to also have computer products, in that order. Forget customer service here. They used to make a great product, but the stockholders must have become too greedy for a fast buck and completely forgot about the end user?s satisfaction.

User Rating: 1/10

what a bad joke

Pros: comes with an uninstall (sort of)

Cons: to many to list

Review: after suffering with this waste of time and money for a month, I clicked the support tab and was offered an upgrade fix for $50 !!!
I reformatted my hd down to the shine. reinstalled and sos. dont waste your money or time..

User Rating: 2/10

Buy one that will at least offer product support.

Pros: None that mean anything.

Cons: Uses too much memory and Norton won't support their product.

Review: First, let me say I've used Norton for years. But, they've apparently grown complacent with their success and have decided the customer comes last.

I've found Norton is so antiquated it siphons off an inordinate amount of resources. It would almost seem the main way it protects you is to slow your system down to the point where you can't go anywhere and by doing that, you can't be exposed.

But, the worst thing is the complete lack of support for their product. I've tried contacting them repeatedly concerning things like the new virus definitions not downloading and the Common Client Updates not downloading. Without these, of course, your antivirus and Internet Security are pretty much useless. Norton doesn't seem to care. At least their total lack of response would indicate that.

My solution is the same I'd suggest to anyone: Trend Micro's PC-cillin. I've found it at great prices all over and some rebates are available. It comes highly recommended by nearly all reviewers and is reputed to use minimal resources. Can't wait to get it loaded and get rid of this millstone around my computer's neck.

User Rating: 2/10

stay away, not worth the bother

Pros: free(at present)

Cons: everything, better and more stable products

Review: I had Norton Personal Firewall installed and Norton Systemworks Premier (both 2005). After installing the spyware all of a sudden I had Norton Internet Security suite and Norton Antivirus had disappeared fron Systemworks. After about 2 weeks I removed the spyware from my system. My firewall and antivirus also disappeared. I tried reloading them to no avail. I gave up after some time and simply wiped Norton from my system and installed PC cillin. I will not be going anywhere near any Norton product again.

User Rating: 2/10

consistently used up over a Gig of much-needed boot drive space on my iBook, grinding everything to

Pros: their rebates were on time!

Cons: rebate hoops and space hogging solution made for a very bad experience

Review: nothing is better than this solution: literally, as in I prefer to use nothing at all rather than this application.

User Rating: 10/10

The best one out there

Pros: Very reliable, better than previous version,

Cons: may be expensive

Review: I have been using this product from 2000. Compared to other products I like this firewall a lot better.

How the mighty have fallen

Pros: Well, it looks good but that's all. I hate it.

Cons: It will slow your system down to a crawl. It misses a lot of spyware.

Review: A one time great app is now a bloated shell of it's former self. Sad.

User Rating: 4/10

sad product

Pros: better than nothing

Cons: nothing to it

Review: I have had the product for 3 yrs and this is by far the worst...online and phone support is near nonexistent. When you do get the techie on the phone they repeat your every word and then respond back to you via email exactly as they did on the phone with no solution

User Rating: 2/10

Norton has gone downhill

Pros: Trusted name

Cons: Resource hog, takes over system

Review: Norton used to be awesome, now I never recommend installing it. Norton will slow your pc to a crawl. Norton can be hard to remove completely and can even be the source for your computer not getting online or not accessing your home network. I would try Panda first, AVG second but NEVER Norton!

100% CRAP.. DONT INSTALL THIS PIG !!

Cons: ITS THE BIGGEST RIPPP GOING

Review: WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK.... OLD CODE. SLOW. RESOURCE HUNGRY.. AND INEFFECTIVE... PERIOD. ITS ABSOLUTE CRAP... STAY AWAY...!!! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED !

PC Techs Unite!

Pros: Firewall????

Cons: Blocking network communication, resource hog, major web issues

Review: I have been a field pc tech for almost two years now, and the first thing I check for if they are having severe problems is if they have any Norton Firewall/Internet Security installed. I have had dialup people who cannot access secured sites (an un-installation of NIS fixed the problem), and have had broadband people disable NIS when they wanted to get online. Now with home wireless networks becoming more common, computers that are manually configured to access the internal network will still not share or access files or printers across the network. Permanently disabling or uninstalling seems to always fix the problem.

User Rating: 10/10

Fantastic Product!!!!! A must have!!!

Pros: Fantastic all-in-one product

Cons: None that I can see

Review: Before installation my computer was running very slow. Once installed, I ran a virus scan (which also scans for spyware). I detected 6 threats and automatically deleted/repaired 5. The sixth threat could not be automatically repaired but Norton gave me clear and concise instructions that explained how to manually remove the threat.

Once these threats were removed my computer ran like a top!

User Rating: 9/10

Thanks Mr. Norton!!

Pros: Removes spyware and keeps my computer clean

Cons: Parental control is antidemocratic

Review: Mr. Norton created a innovative application to fight against bad corporate spyware and adware. Finally an all-in-one software and a secure real time protection to keep my computer safe!Another big step for humanity after Norton Commander!

User Rating: 10/10

This program is a must!

Pros: Many great programs in one!

Cons: Nothing in particular

Review: Forget having to use 7 programs on your computer for security! With the new Norton Internet Security Antispyware Edition you are perfectly protected with just one program!
Imagine having:
A world class spyware program
A great anti virus programs
A really safe and easily configured firewall
An antispam function for your email that works with Yahoo Mail
A parental control feature that can save your kids from all bad things on websites
A security function that protects your creditcard information and passwords from coming out on the internet
An adblocking feature that takes away all those irritating popups and that also takes away advertisments!
I am so happy with my product and whenever I get a problem (caused by my inexperience with computers) the superior support always gets me back on track within minutes!
If I am only to teach other people one thing in my life it is this:
Buy this program! It is the best out there and you will never look back to using 7 programs creating internal conflicts instead of this great program. Symantec: I adore you!!

Stay Away - wont work

Pros: not that I know of

Cons: makes PC unusable

Review: After installing this version, my PC kept rebooting every time I started it. Thankfully I had Norton GoBack installed.

User Rating: 4/10

not good enough at detection

Pros: detected 2 spyware, excellent at removal

Cons: failed to detect six other which ad-aware did

Review: the antispyware database is rubbish, theremoval tools are great as you can heal, delete or quarantine.
Updated
the scanner was very slow. it detected two spyware and sucessfully removed it with the options of heal, delete and quarantine. running ad-awaren se later on it detected a further 6.

Slows pc to a crawl - Requires massive power to run

Pros: Checks most would-be threats and request your permission

Cons: Drains all of your PC's resources to render your system slow

Review: This software has made my system non-responsive at times, requires my input too many times after settings are established and does not interface well with other web sites that I navigate - especially ones that I attempt to upload data files or make secure payments - either slow in accepting - or does not accept - customer service from many sites have recommended disabling NIS defenses to allow a file transer or payment. After $99 installed five months ago at BB, true buyers remorse. I'm open to recommendations for an effective alternative software that avoids these pitfalls.

User Rating: 3/10

After restart the computer froze stiff.

Pros: Frozen computer gets NO spyware

Cons: Anything else

Review: I had to restart in safe mode to get rid of the prog. This stuff is in the alpha state only.Forgetaboutit!

User Rating: 2/10

Norton Used To Be The Standard: Not Any More

Pros: I can't think of anything positive to say about Norton anymore.

Cons: A tremendous resource hog, slows your computer to a crawl.

Review: I stopped using Norton anti-virus the first part of March 2005. It is a tremendous resource hog of system resources, boot times, and shut down times. With Norton running on your computer, regardless of how fast your processor may be and how much RAM you may have, it will slow your system down to a crawl. Forget about multi-tasking with Norton running in the background.

Plus, I repair and maintain computers for a living and on 4 systems in the last 2 months, I have had to use AVG anti-virus to remove trojan horse programs from computers that had updated installations of Norton anti-virus!

Norton is no longer a reliable product and their attitude regarding customer service is terrible (and expensive). I would not recommend any Norton product.

User Rating: 2/10

Misleading ad

Pros: Not sure of benefits or utility

Cons: Difficult to uninstall

Review: This product is actually an Internet security suite with a beta antispy component. I downloaded it 'cause it was free but then realised that it has a firewall and an antivirus program whereas I already have Sygate Personal Firewall and Norton AV2004. When I uninstalled NIS2005, NAV2004 was wiped out in the process. I had intended to re-install NAV2004 after cleaning out anything related to Symantec/Norton but I had a hard time ridding my XP of these files. Finally I was successful after many hours fiddling around with regedit. Consequently, I decided not to re-install NAV. I don't intend to touch Symantec products again.

What did you expect. Garbage produces garbage

Pros: Hahaha. Funny. Oh! you were serious.....None

Cons: Almost everything. Slows PC, doesn't work

Review: What do you expect when you outsource your development to countries like India, China etc. who don't understand what to do.
This product is utter garbage. Stay away from ALL Norton products. Doesn't update via live update even though its a new subscription. Slows the PC to a crawl on a dual cpu Intel Xeon 3.2 GHz with HT on !!!!

Norton is history. Go with Trend PC-Cillin. That is truly a superior product

User Rating: 1/10

No way you should download this

Pros: as far as i can see, it doesn't have one

Cons: huge amount of system resources, desinfection fails

Review: Well, if anyone from the symantec company is reading this, please realize the following: There is no way you can win the best antivirus status because no one has a mega-turbo computer with 5 GB of ram or something like 6 GHZ processor. The Norton's interface it's awefull and never changed. And please, there's no way you can remove a single virus, while the program says "cannot desinfect virus" click "OK". people know there is other antivirus in the market, including the free ones, and as they know..they will choose them. In my country every new computer in the stores comes with norton, and every people that i know, removes it as soon as they turn computer on. The entire antivirus needs to be recoded, but anyway i don't think people will trust on it anymore, at least all the people i know on my town. By the way, the firewall? yes it's very efective... it reduces the internet speed to 0%

User Rating: 2/10

It is the wost behemot I have ever tried

Pros: No pros here just to big in size and restrictions

Cons: Way to strict instead of dealing with real practical issues

Review: It slows everything down. Besides that it closes to many things and starts to ask to many questions for the non technical uses.

It's size is to big AND all the options are overwhelming for the non-technical users. I'm technical but to see other suffer and clicking on things the can't explain says enough. Keep it simple is not invented by Symantec.

User Rating: 7/10

Slow but effective

Pros: Does a great job of solving the spyware, popups, and virus problems

Cons: It definitely slowed my system. I finally added more memory and I'm back to normal now

Review: If you have a fast system with plenty of memory, this is a worthwhile product. If you have an older system, however, I'd suggest other programs that do almost as good a job without making you crawl.

User Rating: 1/10

Why waist your money?

Pros: Takes up so much system resources that you can con your wife into letting you buy a new computer!

Cons: Huge footprint on your system, Misses viruses and spyware even when updated, pretty pricey for what you get.

Review: I work for an ISP tech support line and all the people that I have talked to with viruses run norton. At least 20 people a week call in (we are a pretty small company) that cannot get on the internet due to viruses and as soon as I mention they have a virus I always hear the same thing "but I just updated my norton?" these people can attest to a simple reboot in safe mode then over to trend micro's website for an online virus scan and all is well. I am a firm beleiver in PC-Cillin and Trend Micro don't waist your time, or money here.
