The Sanyo SCP-4700 is practically identical to the popular SCP-4500 except for one major enhancement: The SCP-4700 will work with Sprint's next-generation voice network. Unfortunately, the phone will not be compatible with the company's high-speed data network, so users won't see any difference in wireless Web surfing or modem speeds. As noted, the candy bar-style Sanyo SCP-4700 is essentially a mirror image of its predecessor, the SCP-4500. It has the same dimensions (5.3 by 1.7 by 1.1 inches) and weight (5 ounces) and also shares the same scratch- and fingerprint-resistant faceplate. Unlike the 4500's pewter-colored finish, the 4700 has a shiny, silver cover that we prefer. While this isn't the sleekest phone available, it does feel comfortable in the hand.

Like the SCP-4500, the SCP-4700 has a large, five-line ClearGlo, blue-backlit display that's easy to read in most lighting conditions. It also sports a roomy backlit keypad and a large navigation button for accessing the phone's functions and surfing the Web. There's even a dedicated button to access the SCP-4700's speakerphone capability. Feature-wise, the phone comes fully loaded. It has caller ID, analog roaming, voice-activated dialing for up to 20 numbers, voice memo, a calendar, a to-do list, wireless Web access, a couple of mildly amusing games (Crab Catcher and Slots), 13 types of ring tones, a vibrate mode, and a 300-name phone book. One area where the SCP-4700 shines is battery life. We came close to matching Sanyo's rated talk time of four hours and fell just a couple of days short of the 12-day standby time, which is still quite impressive. Furthermore, if you need to take the charger on the road with you, it's slim enough to fit easily in a suitcase or bag.

We tested the dual-mode (CDMA 1900/AMPS 800) mobile on Sprint's network in the San Francisco Bay Area. Overall, we typically got coverage wherever we used the phone, and while we could typically hear callers, there were some occasions when we had to move the phone's mike closer to the mouth in order for callers to hear us. The speakerphone, however, sounded better than those found on most landline phones.

Excellent phone

Pros: These phones were before their time. I first had the 4000 back in '99 and was able to check my Hotmail before most could

Cons: The speaker phone is incredible. It's very durable. Large keys.

Review: In retrospect, it may be difficult to appreciate a phone like this. When it was released, it was quite a good phone.

The way all cell phones should be made.

Pros: Battery life is spectacular, Reception while those around you are roaming for even a connection, Sturdy and well built. It truely takes a beating,

Cons: Outgoing history could be larger but is more than bearable.

Review: I can't say enough for this phone. We've had two of these for five plus years and would not think of exchanging them for the problem laden flip phones out there right now. No flip phone, no matter the cost will match this phone for reliability, battery life and/or reception. I've been with associates that carry $400.00 phones and they are amazed that the Sanyo SCP-4700 will connect while theirs will not. It's too bad for you that this phone is not in stock but if you can find one I would strongly recommend it if you want a superior phone. It doesn?t have a camera as if it matters. The many other options that flip phones cannot pack far out weigh the need for a camera. It isn't out of stock or discontinued because of its faults in my opinion, but rather that it was too reliable and sturdy.

You guys are fairies. This is a manly phone.

Pros: Not for girls

Cons: Meant for real men.

Review: You pencil neck geek fairy hands might like the smaller phones, but real men are used to hanging on to something big.

Review: I don?t know what else to say other than this is the best Phone I have owned. Buy it and you won?t be sorry! I recently pulled it out of storage to use because I new cell phone that is a piece of junk and unreliable, broke. So I called sprint and had them reactivate the SPC 4700. It is nice to have it working again.

Best phone I ever owned. An efficient tool.

Pros: Battery life was *unreal.* Excellent user interface.

Cons: I found no negative features on this phone.

Review: This is my ode to the best phone I every owned. There's nothing like owning something you're proud of...even a cell phone. 1)This phone's battery *wouldn't die* it lasted days on end. 2)The phone was sturdy...dropped it a thousand times...never skipped a beat. 3)Excellent user interface: quick access to recently dialed and received numbers 4)A curious "pro" for this phone was its internet access, which is to speak well of the Sprint text-based internet debut. It was a phenomenally efficient tool for getting quick data: weather, dictionary, movie times, yellow pages, and even a google search. I learned my way around it in no time, as opposed to late model phones that are in color with pictures. My experience with these phones has shown them to be poor tools and slow processing. It was a great phone, I hope that someday I can take as much pride in a phone. RIP Sanyo SCP-4700.

Old faithful

Pros: durable, good range of features for price (free!)

Cons: bulkiness, nothing flashy

Review: I got this phone free with a new line of service from Sprint in 2002 or 2003, and it was already a little outdated then. I later decided to upgrade to a newer, cuter flip phone with a camera, web access, "pretty colors," etc. Less than a year later, it caught the eye of one of my kleptomaniac students and eventually disappeared from the desk drawer of my high school classroom. I decided to return to my scp-4700 instead of purchasing a new phone and have used it, without a hitch, ever since.

Even though I get cute comments like, "Is that your house phone?" when I use it in public (it's about 5 1/2, 6" long and about an inch thick), it does me justice. Voice dialing and ringer, memo recording, speakerphone, call/calendar alarm, wireless web...plus a dozen other features you might not expect from a basic phone...are all there. Plus, I think it's impossible to break. The battery doesn't last more than a couple of days of light use, but is fully juiced in only a few minutes.

I am finally shopping around for a new, more portable phone now (purses are just getting smaller these days!), but am at a loss to find something comparable.

Great phone, good reception, durable

Pros: Has taken a beating after 3 years and outlasted my 5300 camera phone.

Cons: Finish wears off and antenna had to be fixed

Review: I would buy this phone again in a heartbeat. It is durable, has had no battery problems and stays charged for days on end. I have had it since Fall 2001 with few problems, my spouse damaged the antenna but was able to fix it cheaply and easily. The speakerphone has remained constant and this phone has outlasted my 5300 camera phone.

3+ years and still a workhorse

Pros: This phone has been wonderful. I bought same model when Sprint had sale for $30. Haven't had to switch yet and have 2 batteries. Best cell phone I have used.

Cons: Sprint service can be spotty.

2.5 yrs--Reliable, No Complaints!

Pros: Great reception, battery lasts for days not hours, never had a problem. My wife has a Samsung A400 recommended by Sprint, dies overnite. The Sanyo phone is great, I'm buying her the 4900.

Cons: Using the features can be a bit hairy for someone unfamiliar with cellphones.

This should be your workhorse cell phone: reliability, features, voice quality & reception

Pros: ? Solid construction ? Easy to use ? Bright screen ? Great speakerphone ? Great dynamic range (earpiece and speaker) ? Great reception (compared to other phones) ? Great incoming & outgoing sound quality ? Enough features to meet your phone needs but

Cons: ? No alarm clock ? Resets to default ringtone settings when you change "environment" settings ? Battery life indicator is handy but tends to stay at "full" for days, then plummet to "none" within hours ? Either vibrates or rings but not both ? No accesori

Great phone overall and great speakerphone.

Pros: Great features. Great speakerphone. Battery life exceptional - better than these newer phones.

Cons: I finally broke mine after numerous drops but I like the phone so much, I have rubber banded it back together. I'll keep it as long as I can.

Reliable and Great Battery Life

Pros: Loud, great battery, and good display.

Cons: Must enable keyguard when not in case. Ringer can be embarrassingly loud, especially since Wagner's 'Flight of the Walkuries' is my default ringer and I am often in the company of Jewish persons. I agree that the reception can be temperamental (inches d

Pros: Features are fine if you aren't interested in wireless web.

Excellent reception, Great phone.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been very happy with this phone. Sorry to hear others having reception issues, but I would say reception is one of the strengths of my 4700. It is far better than previous Touchpoint and Samsung PCS phones I've owned, being the first to actually work well in my basement. The battery life is phenomenal, and the ringers are cool. I also really like the user interface- very intuitive and convenient. Dave Johnson

Great phone

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been using this thing for over 1 yr now. Yep, I've dropped and punted it many, many times and it keeps coming back for more. The speakerphone is nice, it's an adequate wireless-webber, and doesn't drop calls for me. Now, here in the panhandle of FL (on those deep in the woods back roads) the signal can be too weak at times, but it seems lotsa other networks have the same problem. Hey, it ain't the best, but wakes me up each morning, reminds me of my appointments, and keeps me in touch with my two little girls in Dunedin----reliably. I'm fine with that.

I Love My Sanyo 4700

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I upgraded from another Sanyo to this one because of the speaker phone and voice dial. I have had this phone for 7 months now and never have had any problems. I have never had any dropped calls. I love the blue backlight and large screen. I do not do web browsing so I cannot comment on that feature. The only thing I wish it had was more ringer tones. But hey, for a good solid phone this can't be beat. My mother likes it so much she is even getting one.

Solid phone

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this phone as a replacement for another older phone because of battery life. This phone lasts a long time before dying and charges up pretty quickly. It's pretty tough and still looks new despite the hell i've put it through. Reception is good. Only downside is that it has several features i don't care for and would trade to just be able to download new ringers or games. What the phone comes with is all you get. I was really looking forward to adding a blackjack game and a few new ring styles but you need the 4900 for that. Over all, definately worth the $90 i spent for it.

A free phone that Sprint upgrades you to

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is the phone that sprint will give you if you want an upgrade but why do you think they are giving this phone away for? it doesnt work like it should.

User Rating: 5/10

Nice Features, poor reception

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This was our companies cell phone of choice along with the sprint network. The voice dial is a real cool feature offered by sprint and compatible with this phone. I and most all my co-workeres complain about the signal strength changing and sound level as well. I have to echo exactly what Lisa says: "Signal strength can change from one bar to five bars just by moving an inch to the left or right." Many of us find we have to switch to a land line after not being able to talk on this cell.

Glitch in Program

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I purchased the phone 7 months ago. For the first 5 months it seemed to work fine. It is a little bulky but seemed to be a solid phone. Then in the sixth month the phone started acting up. At times the screen would cut out or freeze up. It would also shut it's self off. I have been told it could be the battery. I will replace the battery and see if the problem goes away.

This is an excellent phone

Pros:

Cons:

Review: One reason I love this phone is because of the stylish looking silvery face, not to mention lots of features which is always good. The speaker phone is one of the best features it has to offer, which most cell if few have that feature. Internet capabilities are enough to get by, and the phone itself is worth every penny

User Rating: 6/10

Unreliable performance but lots of features.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I researched new PCS phones for quite some time before choosing the SCP 4700. So many people raved about it and so I bought it. I was impressed at first, loved it and its tons of features. However, now I never know when I'll get echoes (more often than not and since I don't know if the other person can hear the echo, I'm really hesitant to use my phone), and I never know if I'll actually get a call or if it will go directly to voice mail. Signal strength can change from one bar to five bars just by moving an inch to the left or right. I'm disappointed in this phone and will be replacing it with different phone soon.

Great Business Phone

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Like the SCP-4500, this unit has all the features a business person needs. Multi-entry phone book with email addys, speakerphone for cruising the voicemail, or handsfree use. Message to: (Melissa, 16-Dec-2002) If you're not satisfied with "too many features" I'd suggest looking into the LG 1010 flip-phone. IT WILL ONLY work on the Sprint PCS network, so IF you roam... you need another choice, but as a basic-service phone, it's "da bomb." -G

Best in Low Signal Areas!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: All the features you need unless you intend spending lots of time "surfing the net" which I don't need a phone for anyway. I love the speakerphone feature, its great for hands-off in the car and very clear. Battery life is amazing. Comment by another user about being unable to hear probably means they haven't figured out how to turn up the volume, which is entirely sufficient to hear in most environments. probably the best thing about this phone is that it will connect in fringe areas that other phones can't handle. Specifically recommended by our local Sprint Store because of this. Gets and keeps a signal! I love this phone.

User Rating: 4/10

Dissatisfied

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am not very happy with this phone. I did not purchase this phone, it was a replacement phone because the display messed up on my original phone. I cant hear on this phone and it has way to many features that you dont even need. I would not recommend this phone to anyone. If anyone has a solution to my problem I would love a response. Thank you fo your time.
