Few Pros, Many Consby ChrisBianchi - June 19, 2005
Pros: Sharp screen, nice button backlighting
Cons: Inconsistent signal quality, difficult to see screen unless backlit, slow browser, lock-ups, distorted audio
Review:
My wife and I have purchased the same phone with a new Sprint PCS plan. Both of us have experienced the same problems. I have talked with ohers who also have the phone and have similar problems.
My wife and I could be sitting within 5 feet of each other while she would have 4 bars of service and I am on roam (or vice versa).
It sometimes takes 3 to 4 tries to get the browser to connect.
We are both on our third "extended life" battery in two years. Our phones maintain a charge for around 2 hours with no use or 15 minutes of use.
While charging through the day (powered ON), my wife will come home and say "Why didn't you answer the phone? I tried calling you 3 times!" The phone never rang and shows no missed calls. There would be no voicemail indication. Calling into voicemail would cause the indicator to come on. After making a call and hanging up, sometimes it would then show the missed call from hours earlier. Sometimes, the phone will beep and show a missed call/voicemail from DAYS earlier.
Flipping the phone closed sometimes causes the phone to power off. If the cover does not flip completely, the backlight stays on causing the battery to drain.
The only case that we found made specifically for the phone does not protect the earpiece which now has numerous scratches. It also has a belt "pivot" which is annoying as the phone is top heavy. While clipped to the belt, it will often twist upside down as I sit and stand. Then, the earpiece will catch on a chair or something and flip open. Not only does this cause battery drain, it also looks stupid to be walking around with an upside down, open phone attached to one's belt.
Although we have compared the settings of both phones, my wife is unable to place calls while on roam. I do not have this problem. We have checked the roam call-block feature of both phones as well as the network selection.
Reception on a cloudy day is awful. I could be in my apartment (located arond 150 yards from the primary beltway of a major metropolitan area) and have no signal all day yet a full signal on a clear day.
Calls drop at random.
My wife has recently replaced her phone with a Sanyo model and has no problems with it at all (so far).

OWNED FOR 2 YEARS AND PRETTY MUCH JUNKby silversnapshot - April 5, 2005
Pros: COLOR DISPLAY WITH TIME

I OWNED THIS PHONE FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS NOW AND I CAN SAY I SHARE MY FRUSTRATIONS WITH THE REST OF THE USERS. I TO SUFFER FROM PHONE FREEZEING WHICH HAPPENS OCCASIONALLY ON BOOT UP OR WHEN TURNING IT OFF AND THE ONLY WAY TO FIX IT IS BY TAKING THE BATTERY OFF AND REPLACE IT. I GET DROPED CALLS WEEKLY AND RECEPTION HAS TO BE BY THE WINDOW WITH THE ANTENNA UP TO WORK WHERE I LIVE BUT THAT COULD BE DUE TO WHERE I LIVE WHICH IS A HOLE. MANY TIMES I HAVE FOUND THAT THE LITTLE JOY STICK HAS CLICKED ON THE VISION SERVICE ALL BY IT'S SELF WHIH COULD BE VERY EXPENSIVE IF A USER IS NOT ON A UNLIMITED VISION PLAN LIKE MYSELF. I DIDENT RELAZIZE THAT SO MANY PEOPLE HERE HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUES AS MYSELF. MANY TIMES I HAVE COME CLOSE BUT STOPED MY SELF FROM SMASHING THE PHONE. I GUESS I JUST LEARNED TO LIVE WITH IT BUT I PLAN ON GETTING A DIFFERENT PHONE NOW KNOWING THINGS COULD BE MUCH BETTER.

Pros: Speaker phone Cheap But it is absoultely not worth the price. You pay for what you are getting. In fact, you can even say that you are not going to get your investment back, since you are probably going to have to buy a new phone shortly.
Cons: Broke - it constantly dropped calls. Had to get one refurbished and that broke also - this time it was the contrast. Battery life last only about 1 hr of talk. Probably one of the most unreliable phones you can get in the market. If people express pos

Do Not Buy This Phone!!!by - May 6, 2003

I can't tell you how much I hate this phone. Battery life now barely lasts a day. If the phone is fully charged and I unplug it for one second it takes 30 minutes for it to charge again! The speakerphone is horrible too. It's a nice feature, but it's not nice when everytime you answer a call it comes on and you can't turn it off. I press the button to turn it off and it says it's off but it's still on! After pressing the button for at least 10 times the speaker is still on! I have to ask the caller to call me back and hope that it doesn't come on again. Signal strength is horrible. The phone always roams in places that previous phones had gotten coverage. The other features are ok, but what would really make them better is if the phone actually worked as a phone.

After 6 months (and my 3rd n400!) I just couldn't take the poor reception, missed calls, no service. Co-worker's N400s are equally poor. Also, screen is hard to see in sunlight, speakerphone is only fair, and acts up sometimes. Phone locks up occasionally. I wanted to like it, but in the end, I got a Sanyo 4900, and reception is awesome!

Pros:

I purchased this phone at RadioShack recently for $49.99 and it is an excellent buy. The reception is good, but Sprint does need a few more towers. I figure that will come in the future. The battery life is good for a color phone. I get about 2-2.5 day standby time depending on usage. People need to realize that this is a color phone, the battery life will be less than non-color phones. The color LCD requires more power to run it. Anyway, I definately recommend this phone to anyone.

The phone is like an old pc, it's slow to pull up numbers etc.. and it freezes on me all the time. I have to pop the battery off the back in order to restart it. Drops calls all the time (that is probably Sprints crappy service), getting the text messages (Sprint's rediculous web-based short mail, it's not text messaging, it's e-mailing) takes forever. I am over Sprint and thier aweful service. There are a few redeeming qualities of the phone but not enough that I would buy it again.

i didn't want to review this phone until i have used it for some decent amount of time which has been 3 months now. battery life is not very stellar but i knew that when i bought the phone. in fact, most color phones do not get very good battery life but this can be solved by either buying and extended battery, travel or car charger or by turning off the gps location sensor which will significantly increase the battery life. i have not had any problem with the speaker phone function. the phone did freeze on me once but hey, so does my computer. the phone is not without any flaws but if you read the manual you will find a wealth of information to help you use the phone properly. the manual can be found on sprint's website in adobe format and is very useful. there are also tons of sites to get ringers and free wallpapers and even games without charge. i upgraded from an sanyo 4900 and have not regretted the decision. reception is very good and signal strength is 1 bar less than the sanyo but i notice no difference in being able to hold a signal and have not had any dropped calls. all in all it's a good solid phone. not the best but good.

HORRIBLE battery lifeby - April 6, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
This is a pretty phone, nice screen, nice graphics, nice bells-and-whistles. But the battery sucks and goes out after 1 day of using the phone for incoming and outgoing calls (total call time <1h/day). The moving fish "wallpaper" uses a lot of energy. Because it's a small phone with a small battery to begin with, it simply cannot support all the graphics programmed for this unit. I use this phone for my job running between hospitals, answering pages, and by the end of the day, especially if I accidentally leave the phone turned on in the car in the parking garage or in the hospital, the battery is toast. I have to fully recharge the phone every night. And any time I am in a larger building where there is difficulty getting a signal, the battery dies within an hour or two because it searches endlessly for a signal -- a function this battery does not support very long. This means I have to be cognizant of turning the phone on and off to save energy throughout my working day. A major inconvenience. It's a pretty phone and has a nice screen on which you can see incoming calls to screen what you answer, however, the battery makes the rest of one's enjoyment of the SPH-N400 bittersweet. Had I known this would be the sorry climax, I would have returned the phone prior to two weeks use. And, of course, Sprint has given me the bogus runaround about how it's my imagination or my misuse, not the phone's lousy battery. Only through CNET have I discovered that my frustrations are not singular.

I don't know about you, but one of the main characteristics I look for in a long term cell phone is a battery that I can have confidence in. I want to be able to go away for a weekend and not have to worry about charging it or even worse, shutting it down to conserve energy. Very disappointed in this phone. Try another one of Samsung's products, which are usually spectacular. Better yet, switch to a different carrier (Sprint bites) and get a better phone.

I bought this phone the monthh it came out. As soon as I got it connected, it would freeze all the time. So I took advantage of the 14 day return policy at sprint stores. I kept taking the n400 back and getting completly brand new ones until I got one that didn't freeze. Finally, 3 phones and 2 weeks after buying the first phone, I got one that didn't freeze, and hasn't frozen once since then (almost 10 months). So take advantage of the initial return policy. If you get a bad phone, you will know it with in the first 2 days of service, and then take it back. If you get a phone that works, you will have one of the most wonderful phones every sold!!! I highly recomend it.

First of all, let me say that I really like this phone. Features, the screen is really nice, the size is decent...however there is a problem. The battery life is TERRIBLE!! They claim 7 days of standby time - well let me tell you, this is a lie! Without making or taking calls I get roughly 2.5 days of standby time! I tried to return it after a month's use, but they wouldn't take it back, and told me I should go to a Sprint service center to find out if there was a problem with it. Turns out there is a problem with the model that Samsung knows about. They are trying to come up with some sort of software fix, but I'm not counting on it anytime soon. Do not let anyone tell you different. I read the mixed reviews here and decided to buy anyway - it was a mistake, and now it can't be undone. Again, this COULD be a nice phone, but with that sorry battery life, it renders itself useless if you are away from a charger. When i go away for the weekend, I end up turning it off half the time, and I'm afraid to make any calls, in case I need it for emergency purposes. For those that have this phone, please call samsung and bug them to get this software fix out - the number is 1-800-samsung.

If you are having a lot of problems with your Samsung N400 help make sure that Samsung does not screw you by releasing a new version of the phone and denying problems with the old one (Like they did with the Samsung A400, they just replaced the defective A400 with the A460, I used to work at Best Buy, and we got soo many A400 back and Samsung immediately discontinued it and screwed the owners of the A400). Go to http://www.samsungtelecom.com/contact_us/contact_us2.asp and report the problem to Samsung and tell them to do something about it. If the site asks to install a Korean font just click cancel. Also make complaints to your local BBB and to the government. The phone has been out for a long time and they still have not fixed the multiple defects like the phone freezing, very week signals compared to other phones, ringer not going off, calls being skipped due to freezing, auto changes in ringer volume. They need to admit their mistake and replace or fix our phones.

This is one good looking phone. But beneath it all, lie many faults. With Sprint, you cannot text message from your phone. You need to connect to PCS vision and then send a message. Trouble is, connecting is tedious. It connects maybe 1 in 10 tries and takes forever. Address book only lets you use up to 12 letters which is not enough for a first and last name. Phone locks up and freezes. If you like to text message, do not get Sprint.

A Truely Impressive PCS Phoneby - March 10, 2003

This is a truely impressive phone, ESPECIALLY for $180 (I got mine for $30 since I signed up for service). I have had absolutly no problems with this phone, and the only complain I have is the slow internet speed... I guess my 3mbps home connection has spoiled me ;-D. The ringer is great, with quality sound for a cell, and the built in speakerphone is good and loud. The color in the screen is great, and the backlit screen and keys glow quite brightly. The games, screensavers, ringers, and useful applications are plentiful, and can be found free all over the net... (Email me for information if you are not sure of how to do this.. it's quite easy) Oh, and the compatability with Microsoft Outlook using 'Business Connection: Personal Edition' utilizes your contacts, mail folders, and calendar. The phone is built sturdy, however I must admit I have purchased a case to protect the screen... would be a shame to damage that Also, don't forget how incredibly light, small, and THIN this thing really is. I have recently purchased an extended life batery which added a bit of bulk of the phone, not to mention adding to the space in my wallet.. it cost $60!!) I feel sorry for few who have had problems with this phone, although for most, I figure it was their own fault <:-/

I've read about all of the problems that people have had with the n400.I almost decided not to get it but i just loved the way the phone looked. i have ahd the phone for about a month now and havent had any of the problems that i have read about. I can say that this phone might not be for everyone, but for me it's fun and easy to use. As for the battery, I find that if you follow the instructions on how to charge the battery when you first get the phone, it wont seem as though talk time is so short. I learned that with my first cell phone. The initial charge is key. The joystick can be tricky at first if you have fat fingers, but you get the hang of it. I guess a lot of people would rather something that cost 180.00 to be easy to use and perfect for them. But sometimes the best things in life take a little effort on your part. I like this phone and am glad that I took the time to learn how to use it properly.

Unfortunately, the software crashed when recharging, or just sitting, making me take the battery off to reset the phone. Annonying, to be sure, but not as annoying as getting stuck in speakerphone mode. It would _answer_ calls in speakerphone, it's not even supposed be be able to do that. I went through 3 of them over a month before I gave up and switched to an LG5350, which has it's own problems. November 25th I'm switching to another provider, which is what I should have done years ago.

I've had this phone for 3-4 months, I needed a sprint phone for school. The only tower up here is Sprint and its almost out of range. I read all the reviews on this phone and had mixed feelings about it. So I was checking out some other phones along with this one, so I went down to Radio Shack (Where my friend works) and had him show me everything about the phones. So I decided to go with this one. I love my phone in my dorm I get 1-2 bars but the calls come in crystal clear so it doesn't matter. I haven't had one dropped call, or any other problems with it. I use it a good amount and people can't tell i'm on a cell phone. Its comfortable when your talking on it and you can hear the person pretty good, I like it better than my friends Motorola. There is a couple of things that are a little bad, like the battery life isn't that long, I usually go about 5-6 days between charges when I'm not using it alot and 3-4 days when i'm using it normally. Another thing about this phone like some other people said is that when the phone is shut its very hard to read the display without the blacklight, so you have to open it up to have the blacklight come on to read it. But thats not a problem.

I got this phone as a gift for Christmas. I've been using Sprint's service for two years now. My last phone had wireless web and one game. This phone has full color web access with graphics, much better then the old black text pages. Also, all the games, ringtones, and screen savers you can download are great. I really love to customize my phone. I only had two problems with it. First, the signal bar seems weaker then my last phone. I was told that one bar on this phone is equal to two bars on my last phone. I don't know how much truth there is to that, but I can still make clear calls with only 1 bar, so it's still good. Also, the first week I had the phone I was having battery problems. It wouldn't last more then 8 hours the first day. Now, I can leave my phone on for days before it dies. I did notice that if you leave your phone on in an area where it can't get a signal, your phone will be dead in a manner of a couple of hours. Other then the battery and signal problems I was having, this is a great phone overall.

I'm a first time buyer of cellular service. Originally, I purchased a Samsung SPH-A460 and had to bring it back because of all the static in the background during calls. I swapped it and got the N400 and I'm so pleased with all the features and sound quality. However, the battery life is not all that great. Additionally, the screen is not visible unless it's backlit which I don't like. Calls are clear as a bell. I like the look and feel of the phone and would highly recommend this phone to anyone looking for value and price. You can download screen savers, ringers, play games and schedule your day with this phone. If you don't have fingernails, the joystick is a bit hard to work. Samsung should switch the joystick with a button. Try this phone out, depending on what you don't mind putting up with, overall this phone is a great buy.

Darn Good Phoneby - January 21, 2003

Review:
This phone is probably the best Sprint offers. It is far better than the A460 even though it costs the same. For the price, you'd be crazy not to get the N400. That said, this phone comes with a few small imperfections: 1. The user manual is worthless. (Although the people at Sprint Support have been very helpful in answering my questions and I've had plenty. If you want to use the cool features, don?t even bother with the book.) 2. Using PCSVision is like some kind of riddle. (Although once Customer Service helps you figure it out it is too cool.) 3. Even though it goes without saying, the color screen is nearly worthless without the backlight on. (But with the backlight, it is beautiful.) 4. The ringers SUCK. Whoever decided which ringers should go on this phone should be killed like the dogs they are. (But don't worry, once your initial rage fades and your PCSVision is set up, it only costs a buck to get a decent one.) The plusses easily outweigh the minuses. This thin, useful, colorful, phone is great. If you just want a normal phone, the N400 has very good reception, a good phonebook, voice dialing, speakerphone, etc. If you want something to impress your friends, it has a beautiful color screen and really cool wireless web. Whether you want a tool or a toy, you should want the N400.

I spent a month with two of these phones after 3 years with an SCH-3500, and I just returned the second due to missed and dropped calls. Other negatives compared to my old SCH-3500: Poor screen readability without the backlight and in general no way to turn the backlight on without losing the current screen contents, short battery life, and no total airtime counter. I liked the phone's size (it's thin and fit nicely in my pants pocket) and the bells and whistles (even the crazy chicken), but this phone doesn't do its real job well enough. I'm going back to my old SCH-3500.

I had an LG Phone with this prior for 2 years, and this phone was by far a down grade from the first phone. The design of the phone promotes terrible clairty and the colors on the phone drain the battery life. This phone randomly shuts off after having a full charge and no talk time used on it. It is not reliable at all! Also, because of Sprint Vision- there are no games that you don't have to buy. Stay away fromt this phone!

Review:
The N400 caught my eye because of its rugged construction and neat menu of features. It was a great price too at $49.99 after rebates from Sprint and Best Buy. Unfortunately, a few days with the phone has left me a bit disappointed. I feel I got a cool toy but still need a phone. First, the call quality is well below my ancient old Star Tac. Also, my Plantronics headset must be plugged in at an odd angle or it pops back out. The screen is nice when on but almost invisible when not backlit. Has option for 8 secs or 30 secs of backlighting so I switched to 30 secs. Contrast must be all the way up. Lots of midi based ring tones but no "regular" ringer. Note to Samsung, replace the "clucking chicken" w/ a regular ring tone. I'm in a major metro area but still find myself moving a few feet to one side or another and asking "is that better?" I do like the color screen, the speakerphone, the "cool blue" backlighting on the keypad, and I have no trouble with the joystick. Pretty easy to manipulate w/ one hand. Good battery life considering the color screen. The phone is great for all the "Vision" pkg features, but call quality should be better. I can put up with its shortcomings for a year, but if you log bigtime business hours on your phone consider a different model.

Worst Battery everby - January 13, 2003

I had two of these phones with in a five day period. One would not receive calls and the other got about 45 minutes of talk time per day. The N400 has terrible ringers and the control button can only be used by someone with finger nails. This phone was not designed for someone who actually uses a phone, but rather for a piece of eye candy. The phone book entries have a twelve character limit. This again is not a real world funtion. I returned the second N400 for an LG 5350 which is by far a better phone. The LG is a superior phone, however, I had to return it also because the volume for the ear piece does not get loud enough. Again I would recommend the LG 5350 to anyone that does not need to use a hands free device or use in a car. I now have a Samsung A500 which the jury is still out on. To all the manufacturers, please take note the Startac 7860 was great because it had unbelievable talk time and a form fitted ear piece for those of us who actually use a phone all the time. A note to sprint please offer a flip phone that is under $300.00 that has normal features for those of us who do not need a clucking chicken or someone telling us we have a call as a ringer.

I received the Samsung N400 shortly after the New Year and I'm ready to flush it down the toilet. This phone will be returned to Best Buy TODAY! The reception is poor, especially inside buildings. The darn phone roams in town, which is ridiculous. The speakerphone quality is fuzzy, and unclear. The battery life is quite minimum to put it mildly. However, there is one good thing that has come out of my purchase of this phone. I have been reminded of a valuable lesson...everything that glitters isn't gold. This phone glitters with its stylish design and nice color, but sucks performance wise. I will be trading this reject in for a less stylish but more efficient Sanyon 4900!

Beware practical phone usersby - January 11, 2003

Review:
After attempting to avoid the "color phone craze" I succumbed and bought the N400. Unfortunately this phone is another example of style over function. The spec sheet looks good. 300 name phone book, color screen, speakerphone, voice-activated dialing. Some features are great. Nice keypad, excellent reception and call quality, fair battery life, great speakerphone. But for all it's dazzle a couple things irk me. First, the phone book has a max of 12 characters per name, which is really ridiculous. My old Erricson and an lg 5250 phones allowed more. To some it's nothing, but try to abbreviate all your contact's last names and you soon become impatient with this system. This seems to be a Samsung trait in all their phones. Second, the color screen. In use, it looks good for a mobile, with nice little graphics and fish. As a graphics animator and technofile, this is cool. But, as soon as the backlight goes off, the screen becomes nearly invisible, and the detailed graphics turn your little on-screen clock into low-contrast gobbledygook. On this particular design it also leaves this big screen exposed, which is not covered by a very thick crystal. One major unfortunate thing really is that single-color, clean interface, well thought-out phone book, functional phones are all but being abandoned by Sprint. Aside from a couple weak offerings from LG (still wish I had the 5250 but it's discontinued) and one $200 super sleek phone by Sanyo, almost all the phones are boasting color screens and are up on the price scale. Camera connectivity, downloadable games, ringtones and the like. All entertaining (but expensive and much less entertaining than a game boy advance). Sprint is focusing on their new "vision" services and in the meantime are leaving consumers irked who just want to have a useful phone. Bottom line: Some great features and performance locked trapped in an otherwise irksome phone.

I agree with the backlight. I set mine to 30 seconds to avoid the cut-off as best as possible. But it's stunning when it's on! I am a whiz with keypads and electronics so I have zero problem with the menu and the joystick. (My mom, on the other hand, said it was "too hard" to use.) And a note on the Sprint Vision plan... The Sprint PCS Vision service is way cheaper than having text-only "wireless web" service plus "ringers and more" service. That's $14./month on most plans. This is UNLIMITED and it doesn't take away from your minutes. I don't mind paying $1-$2 for a good, quality ringer. Esp. the animated ones. The Green Day one is great and worth it! I can tell this isn't for everyone, but for a tech kid like me it's great. A VERY BIG step up from the Kyocera 2255 (aka: P.O.S.). The Samsung is a gem so far.

This phone is great. I love the color screen, pictures, ring tones, games, and everything like that. I've only had a few problems with it. I'm sure the battery will last the 7 days it's said to do in standby mode, but when you use the web or games a lot, it dies fast. My reception isn't as great as it was on my old Sprint phone, but it's still far better then most. My only real problem is that the browser doesn't seem to have cookies on it. I hate having to sign in to my sites everytime. Other then that, I really recommend this phone.

Well I bought this phone after wanting a color screen and a phone that I could make personal changes to. What they don't tell you is that it costs $1 for each song you want to download, which lasts for 3 months. The guy at the sprint store said I could download pictures from online, the only pictures you can send and recieve are ones you take with "their camera." He told me I could take a small pic of myself and use it as a wallpaper, not true. You pay $10 extra for PCS vision, than $1 for each game, song, or wallpaper??? what a rip off!!!

Review:
I purchased the n400 on January 2nd as a replacement for my Sanyo 4500. I was looking for something color, smaller in size, something with a flip, better reception, and equal battery life. Well, Samsung rung true on three accounts: size, flip, andcolor. Other then that, no dice. The reception on this toy was marginally higher then my Sanyo 4500. The spot I'm in has poor digital coverage, according to both phones. Unfortunately, I was able to only sometimes place calls when angled at the tower. But it kept dropping calls like lead balloons. Battery life...boy. Think of how far a Chevy Suburban would run on a half gallon of fuel. Talk time was about an hour on average. I dunno 'bout you, but I can't be always near a source of power. Really, it looks like what's sucking juice is the TFT display that it's using. It's ALWAYS ON! Even though it's dim, it's on. And so far as the screen goes, it's difficult to see when the backlight isn't on. I'll tell you, when that sucker is on, it is beautiful. But you kind'a get to a point where you're scrambling for stuff to turn off and get more battery life. So far as key placements, eh. They actually weren't so bad for me. I wish the speaker phone didn't turn off when I shut the flip on the phone; I guess I'm not allowed to have nice things. And speaking of which, the speaker sounded...well, unclear. When you kicked up the volume, the message became increasingly garbled. And the volume controls, ok. They screwed up. If you don't have key lock on, you can deactivate your ringer while the phone is in your pocket. The menu's...eh. Not bad. The phone book is horrible though. Twelve characters for a name is rather limiting and there isn't a normal ringer for the phone. Anywhere. I got the feeling that this phone was for the guy who never grew up. Do you really want a pretty ringer to go off during a business convention? NO. But man, you'll impress 'em with your screens saver! Go get 'em! Eh. Good points? It feels solid for a flip phone. And the flip is solid too. It wasn't too flimsy. The overall style is nice. And it is small and thin. Bottomline: I need practicality over style. While it does look great, overall, it cannot perform in a busy environment. If I had to buy it for someone, I'd have the consideration to kick in three batteries with it. And they'd have to live in a digital rich area. Now: Did I keep the phone? Heck no! I traded it at Radioshack for the Sanyo 4900 *hence excellent support score*. Excellent phone. In short: though very slightly larger in size, it has a more solid feel, incredibly better reception, and incredibly better battery life. That phone is my recomendation for a color phone. I am currently able to place calls anywhere in my house with 2 to three bars, digital. And to boot, it's cheaper too! Happy hunting!

Never buy another Samsung phone again!by - January 4, 2003
Pros:

Review:
As a Sanyo 4900 user, I was drawn into the N400 by its smaller size, speakerphone, and stylish look. Having actually used this phone for a week, I want to take a sledge to it. This phone is a big POS. The reception inside buildings, more specifically--my office, is horrible. It keeps going in and out of service, something the 4900 has yet to do. The phonebook entries are limited to 12 (!?!?!) characters--what is up with that? And, you need a masters degree to figure out the menu. If you have fat fingers, forget it--the joystick is impossible. I also think they forgot to label the joystick to tell you what all it actually does! And the speakerphone button is so tiny, I think Keebler Elves helped assemble this phone! The color screen is simply atrocious compared to the 4900, which is twice as crisp at half the cost. I need two hands to navigate the menu on this phone while driving, and you can't simply search for numbers in the phone book by entry name. A memo record button would be wonderful also. Another gripe was when i put it back in its Samsung branded holster, I kept hitting buttons which caused the ringer volume to change and sometimes be turned off! The external buttons with the flip closed are no good--why would i want a flip phone if I STILL have to Keyguard it? The battery life seemed pretty good to me, thats about it. Other than that--poor layout, even worse reception, and a flimsy flip plague this phone. If you want a phone for the quality of reception, don't buy this phone--get a Sanyo 4900 instead. I switched back to one this morning!

I just returned the otherwise stylish and good featured SPH-N400. After having friends complain that "I kept trying to call you..." and when the phone would signal a message immediately after a no-ring call, I got fed up. Battery life ranged from two days to as little as six hours. All of this was in a local Sprint calling area (i.e. no analog roaming). The color screen is fantastic to look at when backlit but is next to impossible to read when the backlight is off. The key illumination is terriffic. The other complaint is that the default ringer tones are all cutsie musical ones that get easlily drowned out in a noisy environment. Regular ringers are supposedly available, but you have to pay a PCS Vision download fee. It's a great phone if you just need features and not a real phone.

I got the N400 right before christmas, and have been using it heavily since. I purchased it from BestBuy, who gives an additional rebate, greatly reducing the cost of the phone. I am very happy with the signal it receives. The N400 picks up a signal as well, if not better than the Motorola T720. It is very easy to use, and one handed dialing is a breeze. The speakerphone option is a plus. Its nice being able to have more than one person talking at once. The battery life for this phone is above par for colorphones. I haven't actually timed it yet, but it has outperformed what I predicted it would. Entering numbers in the phone book can be a pain, if you just entered a name in, you have to start all over to enter another, so you have to go back to the main screen, menu, phonebook, and then add new. Not really a problem, just irritating. What to watch out for: Make sure the keypad is locked or you can easily turn the ringer volume off in your pocket (if you don't mess with this, it will lock automatically when you shut the phone) . Also, the display screen is brittle (I already broke mine), so keep the screen towards you in your pocket.
