While the pay-as-you-go strategy is a great way to reach younger cell phone customers, it helps if the handset itself is as hip as the target audience. Enter the Audiovox 8500, a slick, little number that operates on Virgin Mobile's service and is sure to turn a few heads. Unfortunately, as fetching as this model might be on the surface, it's not exactly a crack performer.

Minor player: This pocketable phone is small and slim.
The Audiovox 8500 (Virgin Mobile markets it under the sexier Vox 8500 moniker) is the type of phone you whip out in public just so that everyone can see you with it. Sporting a brushed-silver design, measuring a mere 3.3 by 1.6 by 0.9 inches with the cover closed, and weighing a svelte 3.2 ounces, it's both stylish and compact enough for the youth market that Virgin is targeting, but it wouldn't look out of place in a boardroom, either.

With such style come some compromises. The keypad is a bit cramped, and the buttons lie flat on the unit. The menu buttons are even smaller, so it's easy to strike the wrong key. Even worse is the dim backlighting on the keys and the nine-line displays, which makes the unit difficult to operate in low-light situations. Never mind that you can choose among seven colors for the screen--they're all equally dark, and adjusting the contrast offers minimal relief.

But we did like the sturdy feel to the unit. The flip cover gives a solid click when opening and closing, and the construction seems solid enough to withstand the handset being carried in the front pocket of your pants for long periods.

Easy access: The phone's dedicated buttons launch popular features such as the built-in speakerphone.
It took less than five minutes to activate our service online through virginmobileusa.com. Because of Virgin's promotional offer of $20 of bonus airtime just for signing up, we didn't even have to give our credit card information, but you'll have to do so whenever you plan to replenish your account.

Within five minutes of completing the activation process, we received a text message notifying us that the phone was ready for use. However, Virgin notes that this process can take up to four hours.

Unlike AT&T Wireless's GoPhone service, which automatically replenishes your account, Virgin Mobile lets you decide when to "top up" your account and for what amount. You also have the option of automatically topping up $30 or $50 each month if you don't want to be caught unconnected.

As long as you add at least $20 to your account every 90 days, your entire balance is good for 90 days, beginning each time you top up. Conversely, you can't carry over unused funds in the GoPhone from month to month. Overall, we prefer the flexibility of Virgin's payment plan.

As for the handset, the 8500 has more features than you'd might expect. You get a built-in speakerphone; a 300-number phone book; a selection of 40 ring tones as well as a vibrate mode; a Web browser via the high-speed 1xRTT networks; and Virgin Xtras, with which you can get music clips, ring tones, and movie listings. There's no charge to browse Virgin Xtras, but you'll have to pay for airtime when using the applications.

Mixed bag: While the 8500 won't win any medals for talk time, it does well in standby mode.
Performance is where the Audiovox falls apart. We tested the trimode (CDMA 800/1900/AMPS) phone in the Chicago area and found that call quality ranged from poor to abysmal. Virgin Mobile utilizes the Sprint PCS network for coverage, which is typically strong in our calling area when using Sprint PCS handsets, but our signal was consistently weak both indoors and out. Additionally, the 8500 heats up dramatically after 30 minutes of continuous use.

That weak signal may have accounted for the weak talk-time battery life. We managed only 1.75 hours on a single charge, compared with the rated 2.6 hours. In contrast, some phones with color displays offer better talk time than this model. Standby time, however, was an excellent 220 hours (more than nine days), easily beating the rated 150 hours.

Totally Hopeless

Pros: Absolutely None

Cons: Abysmal reception, no colour

Review: Very poor reeption, poor sound quality, no colour. can't believe they actually sell this.

User Rating: 4/10

good, in plain terms...

Pros: different colored backgrounds

Cons: no color, real ringtones, or loudness

Review: I never had this phone, but Ive known people who have had this phone before.

Of course I wanted to check it out and give an opinion on it just to share here!

Its one of Virgin Mobile's oldest models, so you shouldnt expect too much from this phone! Of course, no color or real ringtones, and of course NO VIRGINXL or voice dialing.

Its a pretty decent phone but without all the fanciness, which I know alot of people would be looking for now-a-days.

So I dont think this phone would be great for many people, but if you want a phone without all the fancy features, then this phone is almost perfect for you.

This phone had it all in its day

Pros: makes calls, sends text messages, can get online, caller id, polyphonic ringtones

Cons: i hate external antennas, id complain about non color screen, but this was when they were relatively new.

Review: this was a great starter phone, this is the first phone i bought in high school with Virgin Mobile. never had an area where service was an issue. and thats saying something in a high school. i went to a 3 story high school. and math on the second floor, in the heart of the building, sending a text message from here was never a problem. i wish i couls say the same for the "can u hear me now" guys. like my Palm Zire 71, this phone also has great battery life.

I love flip phones, this one is good

Pros: Peek-a-boo window in the front

Cons: In black and white. I love color phones better

Review: I like phones with peek-a-boo windows in the front, that's one of the things that drew me to this particular phone. That and the look. Virgine Mobile always delivers with their brand but you have to remember that you get what you pay for with any product. Spring for one of the newer models if you can, but this one's fine too.

Excellent, durable phone with benefits

Pros: Lightweight, VirginXtras, Text messaging, LCD Backlighting, Large sub LCD, Bright keypad, Check your balance right on the phone, Flexible payment options available, Always have a signal

Cons: They'd discontinued it.

Review: I love this phone. For one, many people take for granted the web on this phone. Many prepaid phones doesn't even have the web available to it; It costs to use the web on phones with plans.

It's light and durable and stick it right in your pocket. Great for a backup if you get your primary phone lost, stolen or taken away.

Cool backlighting colors for this flip phone. Classy appearance to this phone. (This phone was shown several times on the movie, The Johnson Family Vacation!)

Speakerphone can be handy in those car situations. Free to receive text and the sub LCD in the front is large and displays all the information you need to see in a phone.

Good phone

Pros: Compact design, easy to use, durable, battery life

Cons: Poor signal strength

Review: I've had this phone for almost 3 years now and to this day still works like a charm. It has a few neat features. The only thing I don't like about is reception can be bad. But all around it works great.
I recently replaced it with another Audiovox phone (Flasher V7 CDM8910) which so far is also a great phone.

Very happy with this phone!

Pros: Small size and battery life.

Cons: Ringer not loud enough outdoors.

Review: This does what it is supposed to do. It is a good phone for a low price. I didn't buy it for games or as a PDA. I have been using it for 1 1/2 years. The battery lasts for days. The small size and light weight make it very easy to carry. Performance doesn't seem to be any better or worse than other phones. I am so happy with it and the Virgin service we are going to replace my wife's Cingular Nokia with a Vox 8610.

Worst coverage ever

Pros: I guess the calculator works alright

Cons: poor extras, horrrrible coverage

Review: This phone (virgin mobile) is a headache more than anything. The phone only works when you can see a tower, and if you are anything more than a 1/4 a mile away (or indoors) the phone straight up does not work. Even if you are lucky enough to get a signal, chances are you will either be dropped mid conversation or you wont be able to understand what the other person is saying anyway.
When I told Virgin about how poorly my phone performed, they basically told me that I was screwed and that they weren't going to do anything about it. Stay away from Virgin Mobile!

Poor lighting, no special features, horrible coverage, horrible battery life

Pros: The key backlighting is cool

Cons: No features, bad quality sound, extremly bad battery life

Review: menus and key backlighting are the only good things.... I'll leave it at that.

Nice and compact, but lacks the bells and whistles most look for these days

Pros: Small and compact, cool backlight colors, and man is this ever durable

Cons: Smaller lcd, keypad is a little stiff, meager features, awful reception

Review: I'm one of those folks who thrives on electronics. Not because i want to, but maybe because i'm shallow and materialistic. But, that can work to my advantage. I buy cell phones like most people buy milk, and when i bought this vox 8500, i felt like giving up and moving to a thirdworld country. When i first cracked this petite piece of electronics open, i was instantly attracted to the sleek, compact design. It felt nice in your hand, but the small and stiff keypad was soon a hassle to use. It also felt a little strange against you face, but not as bad as some other phones from virgin mobile. Though it has some neat backlight colors, including a feature which automatically switches it everytime you open the phone, it still lacks cool extras. The monochrome displays are a little exhausted, and this phone should bet he last of them in flip phone form. It just isnt anything special, and the minor downfalls, including AWFUL reception, i mean awful, if your'e indoors? no service. In your car? one bar. So if, say, you want to make a call and your'e on Route 319, its gonna be super choppy. All in all, this is a phone definetly for the younger crowd, concerned about checking in, texting, and just showboating to their electronically inept friends. Phrases such as "dude, the screen on my phone changes colors!" will be frequently used, but thats about it. This phone definetely wont get you a date, thats for sure.

It is not "ok"

Pros: It is very small compared to most phones and it is very durable.

Cons: VERY Short battery life, Doesn't recognize charging and displays "Very low Battery"

Review: I have had this phone for a while now and I really encourage you NOT to buy it. Yes it is compact and durable, but it is expensive, has short range capabilities, no color screen, and has a really short battery life. The phone also wastes energy by actively searching for the network, 100% of the time, when it is out of range. Usually phones will search once or twice a minute.

Cons: Takes me about 5-10 attempts to make a call, constantly "searching for service" and I live in a Sprint PCS area. Contacted Virgin, was told Audiovox knows that the 8500 does this and suggested upgrading to an 8610. Two weeks out of warranty and I am sol

The Best Phone I've Had Yet!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Virgin offers a great phone with pre-paid service. There are 20 empty slots for downloadable ringtones and it has an option to either have animation or text for a screen saver. The seven avaiable colors for lcd display are a plus and I really like the size. I can program my entire daily schedule into the phone. It was very affordable and I feel that I made a good investment. i highly reccommend it to people searching for a nice prepaid phone.

Great phone..but question animations

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I really like the phone, it whoops on my old nokia 8260. After owning the nokia I resolved never to own a "candy bar" style phone (the pocket lint inside the phone was making it difficult to read the screen). I choose to go with the smallest lightest phone my wireless provider offered and this was it. Like the previous reviewer, color was not important to me due to batt life. This phone does have good batt life. I do however question the use of the child like animations. The idle screen animation options are cute bear, flower and alien !!??! And there is no way to get rid of the joker animation that shows up on the lcd on the outside of the phone every time you turn it on. Other problems: no games, mostly slow classical songs for ring tones although a vast improvement over my old one. I really do like the phone though, and the most important features work wonderfully: speaker phone, voice activated dialing, events, alarms, etc.. and it gets great reception.

Great phone for pros

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This phone replaced my Samsung 8500. It had big shoes to fill. This phone has all the features (Schedule, Alarm, Calc, Web, etc) that a professional would want. Plus it's inexpensive and has a nice outer screen. Speakerphone mode is great and doesn't echo. Navigation is good as is reception (Bell Mobility). The one caveat is that the small main screen may be hard on those with poor vision. It also comes wth a holster witch is very useful and saves the extra expense of getting one.
