The Samsung TXM2796HF is a flat-screen, direct-view television that straddles the analog and digital worlds. Its 27-inch tube takes the standard 4:3 shape, but its digital technology enables it to display progressive-scan (480p) and high-definition (1080i) video formats. Best of all, this Samsung is priced only a couple hundred dollars more than high-end analog 27-inch sets. It makes a good choice for a high-quality bedroom set or a second TV, especially when paired with a progressive-scan DVD player. Just don't expect the kind of performance that a larger HDTV can deliver. The Samsung TXM2796HF is a good-looking set, with a dark, charcoal-gray finish and speakers built in to the left and the right of the screen. The front panel offers controls for the menu, the volume, and the channels, while the front A/V inputs--including those for S-Video--have been moved to the left side of the chassis. This arrangement may keep connection cables out of the way but could prove annoying to access if you intend to stick this TV in a tight cabinet.

Black and somewhat bulky, the well-laid-out universal remote lacks illumination. Samsung boasts about its plug-and-play setup and easy menu system, but we thought that the reinvented menu was a disaster--it requires way too much thinking. What separates this set from its analog brethren is the processing that converts standard analog video signals (480 interlaced) into the 480p progressive-scan format. The TXM2796HF can also display 1080 interlaced--an HDTV format--if the set is fed that signal from a separate HDTV receiver, satellite, or cable box.

Samsung includes a three-line comb filter for improving composite-video sources, as well as selectable scan-velocity modulation and digital noise reduction. A vertical-compression feature allows the 4:3 tube to display the full resolution of anamorphic, 16:9, wide-screen images. The image can be viewed in Normal, Zoom 1, Zoom 2, or Wide modes; the latter has up/down controls to position a wide-screen movie to your liking.

There are four picture modes: Movie, Dynamic, Standard, and Custom. Unfortunately, there's no independent memory for matching inputs to custom picture adjustments. The only way to modify the picture is via the single Custom memory slot. In an unusual twist, Samsung includes five different color-temperature settings: Warm 1, Warm 2, Cool 1, Cool 2, and Normal.

The two side speakers are driven by 10 watts each--a fairly large amount of power for a 27-inch set--and the TXM2796HF sounds decent. Samsung's audio-listening modes include Standard, Movie, Music, Speech, and Custom, depending on what you are watching or your listening preferences.

The TXM2796HF's jack pack offers four composite-video inputs, one of which is on the set's side; one S-Video input on the side; one RF input; and two wideband component inputs for connection to progressive-scan DVD players or HDTV receivers. The most glaring miscue is the lack of an S-Video input on the rear panel. First off, we need to note that high-resolution, wide-screen material--such as progressive-scan DVD and 1080i HDTV--looks best on big-screen TVs, where you can really appreciate the detail. Since this 4:3 Samsung places letterbox bars above and below the wide-screen image, the active picture area measures about only 25 inches diagonal. If you're looking for a larger image, check out Samsung's 32-inch TXM3298HF or its widescreen brother, the 30-inch TXM3098WHF.

We examined the set in Movie mode and found the Warm 1 setting to be closest to the industry standard for color temperature. Interestingly, Warm 2 is nearly ideal for watching black-and-white movies, which require an even lower temperature setting than do color images.

The all-important color decoder was exactly as we've come to expect from most manufacturers: it exaggerates the red spectrum and gives the yellows an orange tint. Grayscale set up fairly well, however, and the set delivers plenty of light output without distortion.

We looked at the Insomnia DVD for reference. One of the greatest benefits of digital technology is the clarity and detail produced when the signal is good. With this DVD, the TXM2796HF looked very sharp. There was a lot of detail in the image, from expanses of water to gray, rocky landscapes to green trees to Al Pacino's black, leather jacket. Blacks were very deep and rich but maintained good clarity. The color decoder, however, gives everyone rosy cheeks; it may be cold in Alaska, but no blush for tired Al, please. We had to back down on the color setting slightly, putting it below the point that our test patterns had shown was optimal.

When films are transferred to video, unsightly artifacts can be introduced into the image during playback. Many current TVs offer 3:2 pull-down circuitry to clean up these artifacts, but this Samsung does not. The opening scene of Star Trek: Insurrection has an overview of a small town by a river, including overturned canoes and the ridges along the edges of rooftops. With 3:2 pull-down, the edges of these objects are clean and sharp. With the Samsung, however, they were alive with artifacts, which appear as a pixelated banding that changes as the camera moves. As a result, we highly recommend you pair this TV with a solid progressive-scan DVD player.

Great, especially for DVD's

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Great picture. Extremely flat screen. 480p conversion for cable input seems to be easier on the eyes, and is more stable. (Compared to old tv, noticed stability of lines on a tennis court.) Nice PIP feature with the 182 code. I use VCR for 2nd screen, for safe commercial surfing ;) DVD's are very sharp, especially widescreen DVD's. Much better than on a low res TV. I just told my DVD player that my TV is a widescreen 480p set. (Still need to press the WIDE button on TV remote.) I avoid the cycle-thru for TV/VCR input by using PIP. To switch from cable to vcr, I hit PIP,Swap,PIP. You can hit buttons quickly and the TV will catch up. You could hit the TV/Video button 4 times quickly (but not too quick) and cycle thru fast. PIP/Swap/PIP can be pressed fast as my thumb will go. Not many negatives. You can often see the pixel grid, even though the pixels are tiny. Worse than on my lousy old TV. Even with 480p, there's some flash/strobe, but I'm comparing to LCD. I haven't noticed a CRT TV that's better. Wish list: Adjust the volume output to the RCA jacks with TV remote. Get rid of the brief display "MTS: Stereo Signal: Stereo+SAP" in bottom left of screen. Anyone know what ACS or AGC are on the service menu? I wonder if anything there is a bad idea to play with. Saw something in google search on ACS demagnification, which I think you're only supposed to do occasionally. email: Zjukxx@yahooZ.com, without the Z's.

Excellent TV-Especially after you unlock it!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have had this TV for a week and I love it. The unit has scan line doubling circuitry so it makes even standard broadcast stations much crisper. Because it does this you don?t necessarily need a progressive scan DVD; the TV converts incoming 480i signals to 480p automatically! The image is great especially after you unlock all of the added features in the service menu. After spending many hours playing with the various settings, I have the TV the way I want it. It has an amazing array of fine-tuning adjustments to compensate for just about any display anomaly. If you are familiar with the adjustments for a computer monitor, imagine 10 times the level of control. There are separate video geometry adjustments for each of the supported picture formats (normal TV ?480i, Progressive Scan ? 480p, and HiDef-1080i). One thing I have noticed about the unlock code is that it only works once per power up. If you want to get into the service menu again, you will have to unplug the TV and wait 5-10 seconds or so before powering up and pressing the Power-Mute-1-8-2-Power button sequence on the remote. If you get into trouble with the settings, fear not, there is a reset feature in the service menu. You will loose all of your settings but at least you can start again from square one. In a previous review someone mentioned the black and white mode they got stuck in, I believe that it is because they enabled the 3-D Comb feature that does not work properly. To get out of this, use the above procedure and just reset your settings to the defaults. Recommend settings: 1) PIP ON ? Good thing to have if you have two non-component inputs. 2) Turbo Sound ? Boosts the treble and bass for the speakers. If connecting to stereo using audio out this is a moot feature. 3) Reduce the base brightness. The best viewing mode for poor video sources (i.e. most of my cable providers channels) is in movie mode. This cleans up a lot of the pixel artifacts but also makes the picture too light. Changing the base brightness helps with this. 4) Get a reference DVD with test patterns and color pages and adjust the picture settings accordingly. 5) 3-D Comb filter ?OFF ? On my set it does nothing but make the picture grainy and monochrome. Other minor complaints I have with the TV: 1) There are no S-Video inputs in the rear. The only one is on the side in the very front which is very visible and unusable if you are space constrained in an entertainment center. 2) There is no way to directly select the video source by a single button press (e.g. component1, AV1, Ant1, etc.). You have to cycle through the various sources and you have no way of knowing where in the cycle starts on power up. This makes programming macros into my Sony universal remote impossible. 3) PIP is not available using component inputs. 4) The PIP mode will show the video for the Cable and one of the AV inputs only if the Cable is the primary screen. If you swap the pictures, the Cable window goes black.

Unlock Works! Couple more questions please

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Just got this TV and love it-the unlock feature works! 2 questions for those who have owned this for awhile please: 1. How do you get PIP to work when you're controlling the channels from a cable box? 2. I'm getting some sound feedback on the tv itself when the video source is on mute-any suggestions. Thanks to this forum! Enjoy this tv

Cons:

Review: The two component connections look great one for xbox DVDs and video games. The other for HD cable. Perfect for small rooms and dorms. While everyone else spends thousands for 10 HD channels I spent $650.

The Unlock Works.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Happy Owner was right, but you have to put in the code before the TV even gives a picture. Turn it on, and as soon as the power indicator led turns on, press MUTE, 1, 8, 2, and Power again before the screen even turne on. Then it'll turn on with a system menu. Access the Options menu to turn on all of the features. Note that some features turn off other features, for instance BBE sound will turn off Turbo Sound. Enjoy your new features!
