Company cars on a budget
A company car, even at the economy level, is a pretty big investment. To be an asset instead of a burden on a start-up company, the car must be reliable and practical. Its operating costs need to be low to keep the company's overhead from becoming crushingly expensive. But it also needs to do the job, whether that's making sales calls or deliveries or visiting venture capitalists. We've selected cars that are less than $25,000 and that serve a variety of purposes. The Hyundai Sonata GL makes a compelling argument, with its leather interior and 10-year warranty. Two hybrids, the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic Hybrid, offer superior mileage from well-respected manufacturers. The Audi A3 works as a multipurpose vehicle, carrying passengers in comfort and cargo in the back. And despite its funky looks, the Scion xB seats four adults very comfortably while offering excellent cargo space.

Review summary The Hyundai Sonata EX offers a very compelling competitor to the small-sedan segment, which will have Toyota and Honda looking over their shoulders--however, don't expect too many digital comforts. Thanks to a seamless and sophisticated power system, the 2005 Toyota Prius delivers excellent gas mileage and comfort, making it the best hybrid on the road today. Honda takes an old favorite and makes it even more ecofriendly and economical, but the Civic Hybrid can't keep up with the Toyota Prius's performance. Solid performance marks this early-adopter car, but the Audi A3 gets pricey when all options are in. The 2005 Scion xB offers style, utility, a roomy interior, and a surprising amount of safety technology for the price.
