Subtle hybrids: only your mechanic will know for sure
Wayne Cunningham
Wayne Cunningham,

Hybrids are still somewhat rare and cause interested onlookers to ask questions or take pictures. But being the center of attention isn't for everyone. A Toyota Prius or a Honda Insight will definitely attract inquisitive gazes, but if you prefer not to shout your environmental concerns from the rooftops, you can opt for a more conventional-looking hybrid. At a glance or even a long look, no one will know these cars are hybrids, but you'll still be saving money on gas and causing less pollution.

Review summary Honda takes an old favorite and makes it even more ecofriendly and economical, but the Civic Hybrid can't keep up with the Toyota Prius's performance. The 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid delivers plenty of power and digital entertainment features, but its thirsty engine keeps it from ruling the road. Ford's 2005 Escape Hybrid, the first hybrid SUV, drives off with a winning combo of power and good fuel economy, but be prepared to pay a premium. As the first luxury SUV hybrid, the Lexus RX 400h makes a good first impression with its power, its fuel efficiency, and its technology.
