Sure, you could drop $2,500 on a flashy ultraportable or a powerful desktop replacement, but if you just want a portable computer for basic productivity work, those other laptops could be overkill. Mainstream laptops, the portable equivalent to budget desktop computers, give you just enough power for working on e-mail, word processing, or surfing the Web--usually without the extra features or the high-end components that push up prices.
