Add a hard drive to your network
![]() Allen Fear, senior editor | If you run a small business, you understand the value of file sharing over a network. New network-attached storage products make backup and file sharing easier than ever. These solutions aren't to be confused with the industrial-strength equipment used by large corporations, but they offer plenty of useful features for small businesses and home offices, and they're also substantially less expensive than full-fledged file servers.
The Buffalo LinkStation and the Maxtor Shared Storage Drive deliver the most bang for the buck, and each includes an integrated USB print server. The Mirra media server is designed primarily as a backup solution, but you can also use it to share digital images over the Internet. The Linksys EFG120 supports gigabit Ethernet and is well suited for small businesses in need of a more flexible storage solution that allows you to swap in an additional hard drive.

| Review summary | Buffalo's LinkStation is the best low-cost solution for adding storage and a print server to a home or small-business network. | Consumer NAS drives don't get classier or easier than the Maxtor Shared Storage Plus, but we'd like to see Gigabit Ethernet on it. | The Mirra is a personal server that delivers automatic backup and file sharing for homes and small offices with multiple PCs. | The EFG120 offers the perfect feature set for some small businesses, but everyone else should turn to better-equipped competition. | Combining 120GB or 200GB of storage space and an 802.11g access point, the Tritton WiFi NAS is a wireless data archive. But its steep price tag, poor performance, and weak security give competing NAS units the upper hand. | This is one of the cheapest--and we use that word loosely--ways to get tons of extra network storage and a Wi-Fi access point. |
