Smart phones--they're a great concept. Combined are the powers of a cell phone and a PDA in one unit, letting you make calls, send e-mails, and work on documents without myriad gadgets; yet, these devices haven't exactly taken off. Why? Form factor may be one of the main reasons. To date, smart phones have typically been clunky and heavy, making them unattractive substitutes for your primary cell phone. However, things are looking up. Take these four smart phones, which are compact and pocketable yet don't sacrifice important features, such as wireless connectivity and PIM functionality. The Cingular 2125, the T-Mobile SDA, and the I-mate SP5 represent the latest crop of Windows Mobile 5 smart phones, and while RIM is plagued with legal problems, it's not down and out yet, and its BlackBerry 7130e is a great device. Read our reviews to see if one of these compact and light smart phones is right for you.

Review summary Although it lacks Wi-Fi and has only average call quality, the Cingular 2125 is a powerful smart phone that will help mobile professionals be more productive on the road. For those who want to do more on the go, the T-Mobile SDA offers a winning package of productivity tools, multimedia, and great performance. We just wish the smart phone had a better keypad layout. CNET editor's take Despite a couple of shortcomings, the RIM BlackBerry 7130e offers Verizon Wireless customers a user-friendly smart phone with solid call quality.
