New from Nextel | ||||
![]() Kent German Senior editor | Updated April 12, 2006 Nextel may have hooked up with Sprint, but the carrier's signature offerings are here to stay for at least a few years. Besides using its own iDEN transmission technology and offering an extensive set of business-friendly features such as push-to-talk functionality, Nextel's line of phones tends toward bulky, sturdy, and none-too-flashy models. But with its latest mobiles, the company has begun to change its reputation with handsets that are slim and stylish, as well as packed with a broader selection of features. Nextel loyalists may not be impressed, but the new phones have broadened the carrier's appeal. We pick out a few of our favorites here. The Motorola i860 is the first Nextel phone with a camera, the Motorola i605 marks the carrier's second foray into the world of Bluetooth, the Motorola i355 is a basic but durable model for less demanding users, and the compact i870 offers multimedia features. And for those who crave a smart phone, Nextel finally has an option for you. The Motorola i930 runs on Windows Mobile 2003 SE, and with iDEN and GSM support, it's perfect for globe-trotters. | Review summary | With its i860 camera phone, Nextel brings some much-needed improvements to its otherwise staid lineup. | With the release of the big and brawny i605, Nextel brings Bluetooth to a broader audience. | The supertough Nextel Motorola i355 might be big and bulky, but it won't have any trouble surviving the elements. | Although some of the multimedia features are half-baked, the Nextel Motorola i870 should appeal to consumers who want Nextel's walkie-talkie and direct-communication capabilities. | The Nextel i930 by Motorola is a good choice for executives looking for a world phone that syncs seamlessly with Outlook--if you can live with the poor battery performance and the lack of Bluetooth. |
