Don't buy these cell phones

While we spend a lot of time talking about our favorite cell phones, we don't focus much on the models we think you should avoid. Though many cell phones are serviceable but nothing special, there are some handsets that we have a hard time recommending. So here they are, along with some better alternative mobiles. We had great hopes for the Motorola V710, but the limited Bluetooth was a sore disappointment. Since Verizon probably will do the same with its other Bluetooth phones, we suggest the Motorola V551 for Cingular. Sprint's Sanyo SCP-200 may be fine for very basic users, but its weak battery life and limited features mean Sprint's Sanyo VI-2300 is an improved option. Also for simple cells, we suggest the Samsung SGH-E105 for T-Mobile instead of Cingular's Samsung SGH-S307. And finally, if you're an Alltel customer, we'd pass over the average LG LX5550 for the LG LX5450 camera phone.

Review summary Though the Motorola V710 comes packed with high-end features, their integration and performance is far from satisfactory. Though the Sanyo SCP-200 is a simple, functional cell phone that will please beginner users, more-demanding customers will be disappointed. While it might satisfy first-time cell phone buyers, Samsung's compact SGH-S307 will most likely disappoint experienced users. For customers in Alltel's calling region, the LX5550 has little going for it beyond the basics.
