Slider cells: phones with slider designs |

Slider cell phones have been coming fast and furious this year, and we expect to see more before 2005 is over. They offer a cool alternative to the usual flip and candy bar models: The screen is always exposed, so you can see who's calling, but the keypad is hidden to avoid misdials. You may also get a kick out of sliding up the phone to take a call, although some mobiles let you answer with the slider closed. Slider phones tend to be higher-end models, and most of the handsets here fit that bill. The Samsung SCH-i730 for Verizon and the Siemens SX66 for Cingular are both slider smart phones with full QWERTY keyboards. Sprint's Samsung MM-A800 has a 2-megapixel camera, while the LG PM-325 is one of few Sprint phones to offer Bluetooth. Finally, for a truly standout mobile, try the stainless-steel GSM Nokia 8800. | Review summary | Small, light, and powerful, the Samsung SCH-i730's high-speed data support and built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi make it an excellent choice for those who have to stay connected at all times, though the crippled Bluetooth support may spoil the party for laptop road warriors. | The Siemens SX66 is a decent smart phone for users who like the form factor and need world-roaming capabilities, but we were less than pleased with Cingular's service. | Sprint's snazzy new slider phone boasts the first 2-megapixel camera in the United States and a host of multimedia goodies, but it's stuck on yesterday's data network. | This stylish, compact phone delivers good call quality and lets you experiment with limited Bluetooth capabilities--without breaking the bank. | The Nokia 8800's flawed design and short battery life mar an otherwise beautiful and feature-packed phone. |
