Football on your phone: 3G cell phones bring you streaming video

With the kickoff to football season just a few days away, it's time to think about the best gear for a sports fan. Though you might be more tempted to think of a large-screen television as the perfect gift, a cell phone can also be a useful tool for watching the game. Thanks to Verizon's new 3G EV-DO network, you can now view on-demand streaming video clips on select handsets over the carrier's V Cast service. You can catch up on game moments you miss while running to the store, or you can relive your favorite plays after the last touchdown. The viewing experience will be nothing like your home TV set--and remember, cell phones don't have beer holders--but you can get content from ESPN and Fox Sports. Supported phones include the LG VX8100, the Motorola E815 (our favorite), the Samsung SCH-A890, the Audiovox CDM-8940, and the LG VX8000. Just remember to keep your display clear of Cheetos smudges.

Review summary The LG VX8100 is a smaller, louder, brighter, and more stylish upgrade of LG's VX8000. It adds Bluetooth, expandable memory, and a speedier implementation of EV-DO, but you lose some screen real estate and battery life. Verizon's new V Cast flip phone, the Motorola E815 scores with a sharp 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, plenty of RAM, and an MP3 player. Strong battery life and great video performance make the Samsung A890 a good bet for consumers who don't need corporate-friendly features. Though it's missing some connectivity features, the EV-DO-equipped Audiovox CDM-8940 packs a solid multimedia punch. The VX8000 offers an admirable combination of features and performance. Before you jump onboard, though, make sure Verizon's EV-DO network is available in your area.
