Bluetooth cell phones
Updated January 12, 2006

When your car is your mobile office, you'll want to remain in touch at all times. And since many laws now require hands-free phone use when you're driving, it's important that you keep both hands on the wheel. With a Bluetooth-equipped cell phone, you can chat on a wireless headset, transfer data magically through the air to a handheld, or connect with a Bluetooth-enabled car (for more details on Bluetooth, see CNET's quick guide). But take care, as not all Bluetooth is created the same. While some carriers let you use Bluetooth for almost anything, others restrict it to a headset only. The popular Motorola Razr V3 comes a variety of colors for Cingular and T-Mobile and Sprint has countered with its own slim Bluetooth phone, the Samsung MM-A900. Less-demanding users can choose T-Mobile's Motorola's V360 while music fans should check out Cingular's Sony Ericsson W600i. Back on the CDMA side, Verizon has the multimedia LG VX8100 and if you're a Nextel fan, your sole choice at the moment is the Nextel Motorola i605.

Review summary Though the Samsung MM-A900 is unlikely to win over the most hard-core Razr fans, it's still a compelling and promising alternative to the popular Motorola phone. The Motorola V360 abandons the flashy for the functional. Although the design is a step backward from the last model in the product line, it's outweighed by attractive features. Although we bemoan the lack of an expandable memory slot, the Sony Ericsson W600i is a remarkable and user-friendly MP3 cell phone. The original thin phone, the Motorola Razr V3 has a sexy design and useful features, but its performance isn't always up to par. The LG VX8100 is a smaller, louder, brighter, and more stylish upgrade of LG's VX8000. It adds Bluetooth, expandable memory, and a speedier implementation of EV-DO, but you lose some screen real estate and battery life. With the release of the big and brawny i605, Nextel brings Bluetooth to a broader audience.
