Though cell phone with digital music players have been around for more than a year now, it's been in only the past few months that carriers have taken steps to expand their music services. Sprint was first out of the gate late last year when it switched on the Sprint Music Store and introduced a line of compatible phones. Verizon Wireless then followed last January by introducing its V Cast Music Store and a selection of music-enabled handsets. Wireless song downloads are a bit cheaper ($1.99 per track) and come with fewer restrictions than with Sprint, and you can choose from more than 500,000 titles. Yes, it's not perfect, but we think it's a start toward making music buying more user-friendly. Of the three phones, we liked the Samsung SCH-A950 the best; we appreciated the cool design and the solid feature set. The LG VX8100 was next on our list, while the UTStarcom CDM-8945 was our least favorite Verizon music mobile. More resources

| Review summary | The Samsung SCH-A950 is an attractive 3G cell phone with decent features, but some annoying restrictions remain. | The LG VX8100 is a smaller, louder, brighter, and more stylish upgrade of LG's VX8000. It adds Bluetooth, expandable memory, and a speedier implementation of EV-DO, but you lose some screen real estate and battery life. | Lacking in features and suffering from shaky performance, the UTStarcom CDM-8945 is a disappointment on multiple levels, but it's mostly a lack of value for the money. For a few dollars less, you can get a more feature-rich EV-DO phone from Verizon. |
