The Slingbox rules. The space-age-looking silver set-top box will stream live or prerecorded TV that you would normally watch on your own TV to virtually any modern Windows computer. The Mac version isn't far away. Now, with SlingPlayer Mobile software for Windows Mobile devices, you can access your home TV on the go, from anywhere you have a Wi-Fi or a 3G Internet connection. Compatible devices include HP's iPaq rx1950, Cingular's 8125, Dell's Axim X51, the T-Mobile SDA, Motorola's upcoming Q, and our very own test unit, the Palm Treo 700w. In addition to viewing cable, DVD, or even content stored on your DVR in nearly real time, you can control and program your TV from afar--yet another reason to get a smart phone.

Review summary The Palm Treo 700w brings Windows Mobile and a number of useful features, such as push e-mail and photo speed dial, to the much-beloved smart phone, but its heft and its washed-out screen has us giving the edge to the Treo 650. Although we weren't terribly impressed by the call quality or the form factor, the Cingular 8100 series provides powerful tools to the mobile professional for getting work done on the go. Hobbled by a poorly designed QWERTY keypad and sometimes sluggish performance, the Wi-Fi and EDGE-enabled T-Mobile MDA makes for an enticing but ultimately mediocre addition to T-Mobile's smart-phone lineup. Although far from perfect, the Sprint PPC-6700 is definitely smarter than most smart phones and almost good enough to earn the title of Treo killer. Light, thin, and ready for just about anything the business world can throw at it, HP's iPaq rx1950 is a strong performer but falls short with lack of Bluetooth and low memory. The Dell Axim X51 series offers a nice combination of features, but we were disappointed by the subpar battery life.
