Are all HD satellite receivers obsolete?
David Katzmaier

In case you haven't heard, satellite-television providers DirecTV and Dish Network have both announced that they'll begin broadcasting a slew of new high-def channels in select markets this year. Many of these will be high-definition versions of local TV channels such as ABC and Fox, which HD satellite subscribers currently must watch via an over-the-air antenna. So what's the catch? All current high-def-capable satellite receivers, including the new Dish Network DVR 942, won't be able receive those channels because they're not compatible with the new MPEG-4 AVC format. That means you'll need a new HD satellite receiver if you want to watch high-def satellite-originated locals and whatever other channels the providers offer in the future--DirecTV alone promises 1,500 locals and 150 national HD channels by 2007. That makes the 10 to 20 satellite HD channels delivered by the boxes below seem, well, obsolete. Then again, 2007 is a long way off...

Review summary If you're a DirecTV viewer who just can't live without the TiVo interface and can settle for its operational caveats, the aging DirecTV HR10-250 HD TiVo is a worthwhile DVR option. Dish Networks' DVR 921 is an excellent all-in-one solution for recording satellite and over-the-air HDTV. If you can't wait for MPEG-4 but simply must have an HD DVR now, you could do a lot worse than the feature-packed Dish Player-DVR 942.
