DirecTV vs. Dish Network: unfair HD-DVR fight |

April 11, 2006 The two satellite companies each offer do-it-all high-definition DVRs, and both boxes run circles around the typical cable DVR supplied by your cable company. In one corner, there's the venerable DirecTV HD TiVo, first available in April 2004 and scheduled for replacement by mid-2006 but still being sold today to DirecTV subscribers who want to record high-def. It has a TiVo interface and DirecTV's programming, and that's about it. In the other corner is the new ViP622 from rival Dish Network. It can receive MPEG-4, record three HD channels simultaneously, feed two separate televisions, send video via USB to portable players, and basically do everything but cook dinner. It might be unfair to compare the older DirecTV box to the newer Dish, but that's the state of the HD-DVR market today, and nobody said markets were fair. More resources
