January 31, 2006 Home-theater-in-a-box systems are great for anyone looking for a turnkey solution for home theater, but those with more discriminating ears prefer to step up to the next level. That means a stand-alone A/V receiver paired with a surround-sound speaker system. At its most basic, that's a 5.1 configuration--two front speakers, a front-center channel for dialogue, and two surround speakers for the back--with the 6.1 and 7.1 flavors adding one or two speakers to the rear.
