Dell Venue 8 ($129, Newegg)
So you don't want a crazy-cheap Kindle Fire tablet, perhaps because you don't want to join Amazon Prime for $80/year? Maybe a crazy-cheap 8-inch tablet from Dell will tickle your fancy. At 16GB with "pure" Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean), this one's not going to last, despite the flaws noted in our review.

Starting at: $179.99
The good: The Dell Venue 8 starts at an affordable $179 for 16GB of internal storage, with a microSD expansion slot, and smoothly runs a pure version of Android Jelly Bean. Its soft, grippy back makes it comfortable to hold.
The bad: The touch screen is sometimes unresponsive, large games take long to load, and battery life only lasts about a day.
The bottom line: The Dell Venue 8 is perfect for the budget shopper with modest needs.
