Motorola Droid Razr Maxx

Editors' rating: 4.5 out of 5

The good: Despite a beefed-up battery, the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx is crafted in a very slim and attractive design that's built to withstand the occasional drop, scratch, and liquid spill. It has the same gorgeous 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Advanced display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and fast Verizon 4G/LTE data as its predecessor while retaining powerful multimedia chops and tight security features.

The bad: For such an advanced smartphone, the vague promise of a future Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is disappointing. Also, while having a bigger, stronger battery is great, it's still not user-removable. Small hands will also find it hard to wrap around the phone's wide frame, and the onboard 8-megapixel camera is not impressive.

The bottom line: The Motorola Droid Razr Maxx proves that a powerful Android superphone can remain thin yet still promise marathon-worthy battery life. If you can live without Ice Cream Sandwich and have big hands, the Maxx is extremely compelling.

I can live with the promise of ICS while I stay 'unplugged' all day long without using a battery extender or turning off the features that I bought the phone for in the first place. I was the first one out the door at my local Verizon Store in South Oklahoma City and was hopeful for an android phone I could enjoy all day long. I tried the Droid Bionic and Galaxy Nexus to be disappointed by the short 6-8 hour battery life. I use my phone a lot at work and play, so when the Razr Maxx was shown at CES 2012, I got interested again on moving from an iPhone to an Android phone. I am very pleased with the battery life and features the Razr Maxx has, including the Smart Actions l have created for when I get home or in the car. The firsts day I watched some NFL Mobile for 10-15 minutes, downloaded 20 new apps, sent and received many texts and made/received crisp clear phone calls (none dropped like the iPhone 4S on AT&T), surfed the web (.5 Gb data) played games and did some Quickoffice work, with 40% left on my battery after unplugging in the morning at 6:15 am and getting home at 5:30 pm. All Hail to the Razr Maxx! This is the first Android phone I will keep and enjoy for a long time and goodbye iPhone. I have been using iPhones since the 3. Thanks Moto!

My Nexus lasts 10+ hours easy, and thats on heavy use. Although I wish it was a little longer, its good enough to last through the work day, which is all I care about

I've been getting about ten hours of heavy use out of my Nexus. The Maxx seems to have an incredible battery life though.

gsm nexus here and although i will give it to the droid maxx because it undeniably has the longest battery to the nexus credit its battery i think is more than fair. it gets me through a very long day of school and work. i listen to a lots of music and surf the web a lot (like i currently am). i play here and there and watch entourage while i commute. i have a charger at work although i rarely use it..... great to see android finally getting some good battery life and hopefully they upgrade the droid to ics.. it will make top of my list then, is now third only to the galaxy and the nexus

I'm a Droid guy and this was my choice for my upcoming upgrade. But, this "privacy" controversy has me thinking of doing the unthinkable; going the other way and wait for this summer and the iPhone5.

What are you talking about? There is ALWAYS a privacy controversy with mobile phones, including Apple, Microsoft, and Blackberry.

So, Apple makes a phone without removable battery and people loathe the notion. Now other companies are making phones without removable batteries and it is suddenly okay? And WHY does a new Android phone not come with the newest OS???

Who's saying it's okay? There are like four comments. There are better phones out there than the Droid Maxx.

I pre ordered my Razr, received it on 11/11/11 and realized there was a battery issue from the beginning.

Repeated calls to Verizon Wireless assured me that it had great battery life.

Now, after being mislead from the start, out comes the Maxx.
Any offer of a trade in? What do you think.

Thanks Verizon and Motorola.
