As a GSM
carrier, AT&T offers a comprehensive global network. Generally you can roam from Canada down through Argentina and Chile, throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. Coverage is also available in Japan and South Korea, but you must have a phone that operates on the 2,100MHz 3G band (you can rent one from AT&T). AT&T sticks you with per-minute roaming charges, but you're not liable for any long-distance charges. The carrier offers a selection of compatible phones, and if you manage to unlock your device, you can use a prepaid SIM card.
Frequent travelers can sign up for the AT&T World Traveler plan that gives you a discount on most roaming rates in more than 215 countries for $5.99 per month. For travel closer to home, AT&T Canada offers a standard 59-cent-per-minute roaming rate for $4.99 per month, while AT&T Mexico offers the same rate for the same monthly fee.
Smartphone and tablet users with an iOS, BlackBerry, Andorid, WebOS, or Windows Phones 7 device have a few data plans available; the cheapest gets you 20MB of data for $29.99 per month while the most expensive entitles you to 200MB for $199 per month. Data plans will work only in select countries and the overage charge is 0.005 cent per kilobyte. Alternatively, you can pay for data as use it. It's 0.015 cent per kilobyte in Canada and 0.0195 cent per kilobyte in the rest of the world.
A messaging plan is available as well. For $10 per months you can send 50 messages while outside the United States. Any additional messages are 40 cents each.
