No-gloss zone: Matte-screen LCD TVs compared

David Katzmaier David Katzmaier

Much like birds building nests, people seem to like shiny objects. The truism holds, apparently, for laptop and LCD TV screens as well. Samsung was among the first TV makers to popularize the shiny, glossy screen with its LNA650 series, and we complained about it, albeit to no avail. The company expanded its gloss-coated reach to encompass most of its LCD screens, and many other makers followed suit.

The sole picture-quality advantage of glossy screens we've observed, at least when done correctly, is that they can in some cases preserve black-level performance--dark areas stay darker--in bright rooms with overhead lighting (think Best Buy) somewhat better than their matte cousins. In our book, that plus doesn't outweigh the big minus of a glossy screen: bright objects reflected therein, such as windows opposite the screen, lamps, or even lighter furniture and clothing worn by viewers, appear brighter, sharper, and more distracting than they do when reflected in a matte screen.

That's why, for bright-room viewing or situations where ambient light is difficult to control, we prefer LCD screens with a matte finish. If you do, too, check out the matte LCDs below.

Unfortunately no plasma TV since 2008 has had a matte screen, and while new antireflective materials might help, none handles glare as well as matte LCDs. Even less fortunately, the flagship (read: best-performing) LCDs from many makers, especially Sony and Samsung, sport glossy screens, so you might have to choose between superior bright-room (matte) and dark-room (glossy) performance. Hey, at least neither company charges extra for matte like Apple does.

The products listed below (except for the Sharp LC-70LE732U series) represent one screen size in one series of TVs from each maker. Click through to the reviews for more size options.

The Bottom Line The Vizio XVT3SV series' excellent picture quality, thoughtful design, scads of features, and reasonable price combine to make it the best value among high-end LED-based LCD TVs today. While passive 3D has its flaws, the LG LW5600's 2D picture quality is very good for an edge-lit LED-based LCD TV, especially in bright rooms. For people craving a colossal flat-screen TV who don't want a plasma or a projector, the 70-inch Sharp LC-70LE73U series LED-based LCD offers very good picture quality, especially in bright rooms. Although its attractive features, design, and passive 3D have merit, the picture quality issues of the Toshiba TL515U LED-based LCD TV lessen its appeal in the face of the stiff competition. The picture quality of Sony's KDL-EX720 shows some flaws but its efficiency, design, and well-stocked feature list will win plenty of converts. Although it's blessed with a solid feature set, the picture quality of Sharp LC-LE830U series falls short of most LED-based LCD TVs we've tested.

I totally agree! I bought a 40 inch Samsung LCD 3 years ago, it has a matte finish screen, absolutely no glare from the windows or the lamp across the room. Christmas 09 I got a Samsung LCD 52 inch with that hideous semi gloss screen. I hate it! I am ready to sell it for half of what was paid for it! I might as well have gotten a projector since you have to turn off all the lights in the room to watch it. Bring back the matte screen. My 40 inch has a much better picture. If I want to see my own reflection, I would have bought a mirror. I've looked everywhere and always get s some BS story about the "blacks" on the shinny screens. Well, you can't see the black if you have lights on or an adjacent window. I want my Matte Screens!

David, Apple doesn't charge extra for glossy, as your last sentence states. They charge extra for the anti-glare option.

In regard to...."Hey, at least neither company charges extra for glossy like Apple does." Apple's default displays are glossy. The company charges extra for the option of a high resolution, matte screen on its larger laptops.

Also, Apple has nothing to do with this TV article, so your comment seems out of place.

If you're getting that much glare, get your A** off the couch, go outside and do something.

After a long day of being outside and off my ass I'd like to eat my dinner and be able to see my t.v.!

In May of 2010 we pulled the trigger and purchased a 46-inch Sony with the matte finish screen. In our well-lit t.v. room the option to make this purchase was very much welcome. Our previous television, a 32-inch Toshiba CRT, reflected like nobody's business and made watching television difficult. I wish more manufacturers would simply make the switch to matte finish and be done with it.

I have a Panazonic 42-PZ77U which has a gloss screen with anti-reflective coating. I also have three kids 4 and under which means a lot of hand prints and other marks from plastic toys that bang up against the screen. So far everything has cleaned off fairly easily with a washcloth and/or fingernail.

I've been eyeing the passive 3D LG sets. How easy are matte screens to clean, how susceptible are they to damage? Will the pattern retarder be an issue?

Please update this list at least once or twice a year! I would guess in the next year or so I will be in the market for a 60" LCD TV for my very bright, window friendly, living room. A matted finish is one of my biggest deciding factors and I haven't found a way to search for these types of TVs effectively. Thanks for pulling this list together.

I bought the LG LW6500 series TV, largely based on it having a Matte Screen. I love it. Great TV, great quality, and no issues with reflections, as the room it's in has 4 large windows, and one picture window, allowing more than enough chances for reflected light.
Bought after looking at many websites, and various reviews here on CNET. Thank You DK.

Unfortunately, Vizio's new 3D screens are very high gloss. They share the same basic model code, so the XVT3D554 is very glossy even though the XVT553 is not.

The LG LW6500 does not have a matte screen - it is highly reflective. LG changed the screen type on the 65".

Looking at the reviews and stars given, none of the above are any good or worth the money.

The features i want in a tv are: total matte screen, front speakers, matte finish non screen surfaces, and some front ports like usb and hdmi.
For both tv and computers i do not want glossy surfaces or screens. The glossy trend in recent years just puzzles me as the glossy surfaces are just plain annoying.
My old lcd died and my warranty paid for replacement value which is the good. The bad is that in 2012 it is rare to find a tv without glossy reflective surfaces, the screens are less matte with some reflections of lamps and windows, and the rear speakers produce a muffled audio. my old tv provided a no gloss zone with better sound. not so with my new one.

Matte screens have almost become extinct now - especially in the higher end Smart TV segment. I guess TV makers favor them since glossy screens look much better in a store. Probably, as you have pointed out, they also do a better job of preserving black levels and displaying better contrast.

I would like the a "matte-ness" factor included in the HDTV finder. I cannot say how many times I have gotten my hopes up after researching a TV to see it in the store and see my reflection. Back the drawing board...

Glossy all the way baby. There is no comparison to which has better vibrant color and great contrats.-The Glossy!! Matte takes away all the vibrant color. Even your high end home theatre specialty builders only recommend glossy screen.
