Best-performing 2010 2D-only TVs

David Katzmaier David Katzmaier
Senior editor February 25, 2011

Not everybody wants a 3D TV. In fact, some people simply don't want to buy a TV that's 3D-ready. So at the suggestion of a few readers, here's a list of the best-performing TVs I've reviewed that can't handle 3D sources.

Before we go any further, a couple of caveats:

  1. None of these sets is "new"; 2011 models just started shipping, and we haven't reviewed any yet. On the other hand, you can get great deals now on 2010 TVs, and we don't expect any major picture quality improvements this year among 2D-only TVs.

  2. Many 3D-compatible 2010 models deliver better picture quality (in fact only one TV below, the LK PK950 series, made our Best 5 TVs list). That's the nature of the beast: TV makers build 3D into their higher-end TVs, and higher-end TVs usually have better picture quality.

  3. Also, if you are considering waiting for a "2D-only" 2011 TV, it'll probably be a worse performer than 2010 versions below (for example, no 2D-only full-array local-dimming LEDs will ship in 2011). With the addition of 3D to even lower price/features points in manufacturers' lineups, non-3D TVs will be pushed down further toward the entry-level.

That's not a big deal if you just want a lower-end TV, but if you're willing to pay a bit more for a better 2D picture in 2011, it's likely you'll be getting 3D, too--along with the video streaming, a nonmatte screen, etc. For better or for worse, TV makers don't put their best picture quality into stripped-down models.

So without further ado, here are the six best-performing 2D-only models I reviewed last year, in order of overall picture quality from left to right. If you're boycotting 3D and want a premium picture, you won't do much better.

The Bottom Line Panasonic's TC-PG20/25 series offers a highly tempting mix of features, value, and initial picture quality, but long-term black-level performance is still an open question. The Vizio XVT3SV series' excellent picture quality, thoughtful design, scads of features, and reasonable price combine to make it the best value among high-end LED-based LCD TVs today. With the excellent picture quality of the local-dimming LE8500, LG challenges other LCD makers for videophile appeal. Though it's not without its performance gaffes, the midrange Panasonic TC-PS2 series of plasma TVs still offers very good image quality for the price.

David...to bad for the TV manufacturers, because if I can not find a good high-end 2D TV this year, I'll keep my money in my pocket. I do not want a 3D TV and can not appreciate the value in buying one. Consumers do not like being forced into buying new technology and rightfully so.

The good thing is 2D tvs are cheap I was looking this weekend and LED's going for around $700 dollars are better picture quality than what most of us are use to. These TV's work just fine. Most people dont want to pay over $1000 dollars for a tv anyways.

I couldn't agree more. I purchased a Pioneer 5010 50" TV in early 2008 for what I thought was a great (almost $2000) price. Then in early 2009 I found a deal on the 55" Panasonic S series for under $1000. Comparing picture and including the price, I wish I had waited and spent the money on the Panny 65" S series. There just isn't that much difference between the two pictures to me.

David,

Thank you! You listened and you delivered. I just wanted you to know I appreciate you taking the time to put this list together for us even though I know most people gravitate towards 3D TVs. Keep up the good work!

Whay aren't you reviewing any Hitachi TVs? I stumbled upon a great deal on the 32" Hitachi L32S504 and it has a fantastic picture. I couldn't find many reviews on this set and took my chances but am so glad I did!! The picture is so clear and true to life it is almost like watching 3D. The blacks are true black - I can't tell where the blacks end and the tv frame starts! The sound is clear and sharp.

Since the best picture quality is in the 3d models, What Samsung Plasma 2D HDTVs from 2009 do you recommend?

Samsung LCD TV from 6 series in 2010 is very appropriate with your image quality request . Also in terms of functionality : internet@tv, allshare ,USB Movie (MKV) , and so on .. I own a 40C650 Samsung bought because i didnt need 3D , and i am very pleased with image quality and features !

How is the LG LD650 in terms of picture quality? I bought one this year because I found a good deal on it and it had a lot of features, but I would like to hear what kind of reviews your staff here at Cnet think of it. It's only an lcd tv, and I believe that you guys are mainly reviewing led tvs and 3d tvs, but can you give an opinion on this one? Not sure about most people, but I personally wanted to stay away from 3D tv's.... at least for the time being.

Who cares what CNET thinks about your TV. If you think the picture is the best then for you it is the best.

This is bogus. CNET claims these are "the best" of what's out there and you've never even reviewed the Sharp Quattron. Any survey of "best" performing 2d or 3d TV's will not be complete if you don't review the Sharp line. I've personally looked long and hard at the Quattron, and I'm impressed. So are quite a few users who report their ratings on that line (Aquos or Quattron). I see other users complaining you haven't reviewed some other manufacturers as well. Are you taking kickbacks?

Dave -
thoughts on the Vizio....
Do you think that the 2010 model XVT55SV is that much of an improvement (outside of the cosmetics) over the 2009 model? Stuck in analysis paralysis over getting the 2009 model cheap (1200 at dell) or spend the extra 400 on the 2010 model!
