CNET Community help and how-to weekly newsletter
February 28, 2007
Dear CNET members,
Over many years, going from analog to digital, I have repurchased all my vinyl records and audio tapes on CDs and all my VHS movies on DVDs. Now, that's quite a fortune I've spent, but to me, it's justifiable to move in the direction of the digital age for better quality and portability, as well as longevity. Now the question is, will I be doing same with the direction of movies heading towards HD (high-definition) such as HD DVDs, Blu-ray, or even movie downloads? I've seen the quality of HD DVD and Blu-ray movies, and it is truly awesome! I know how convenient movie download services are, allowing me to watch them on my portable media player. But dang it, I really don't know yet--a few, maybe? For HD movies, I definitely won't upgrade until everyone settles on a format, so for now, I'm sticking with what I have. What about you? Are willing to buy movies in different formats even though you own them on DVD already? Or are you an HD snob, doing so already because you won't have it any other way than HD? Whatever your cup of tea is, join us in the latest Screening Room discussion and tell us if you will be buying movies twice or not.

Cheers!

This week's hot topic:
Will you buy movies twice?
The makers of HD DVD, Blu-ray, and movie download services are all banking on the fact that consumers will be willing to buy new versions of movies they already own. Are you willing to repurchase movies you already own on DVD? Some of our members have chimed in tell us what they will be doing.

"I'm not playing into their game!"
"I will not buy a single high def DVD, no matter what format unless a clear, definitive winner emerges as a standard. Once that's done, I can see buying only the most exciting, must-own DVDs (LoTR trilogy, Matrix trilogy..." (Read more)

"Maybe for some titles"
"I'm not quite ready to jump into either Blu-ray or HD DVD, but when I do, I could see myself rebuying some movies, especially the most visually impressive discs. Even still, it's tough to decide to rebuy a movie..." (Read more)

"Slowly, at best"
"I've had my CD player for 18 years now, and even today I still haven't replaced all of my vinyl with CDs. For the most part, there's so much new stuff coming along that I never get around to buying second copies..." (Read more)

Costco kills return anytime policy
We all knew it was too good to last. For several years now, one solid piece of advice to anyone buying a big-ticket item such as a plasma TV was to get it at Costco if possible, thanks to the big-box retailer's well-known return anytime policy. That has now ended. Read up and tell us what you think.
