CNET Community help and how-to weekly newsletter

Dear CNET members,
With all the talks of saving the environment, global warming, and alternative fuels for cars, CNET just launched a special Living with Technology feature: Green tech. CNET's guide explores how going green is easier than ever and can save you some greenbacks, too. Find out how planet-friendly tech can improve your home, your car, and your lifestyle--so check it out.

And speaking of going green, I don't know how much you folks pay for gas in your neighborhood, but the last time I filled up in the San Francisco bay area, it was few cents short of four dollars per gallon. Sheesh--and there are no signs of gas prices going down--making me wish I had a hybrid car now! I'm just glad that public transportation is readily available to me and is still my No. 1 choice for my daily commute. With the concern of growing gas prices and fossil fuel depletion in the near future--I'd like to turn your attention to the latest Driving It column: Your clean, green car choices, in which CNET editor Wayne Cunningham offers his opinions on alternative fuels and gives a quick rundown on the pros and cons of ethanol, natural gas, and biodiesel. But those given in Wayne's column are only his opinions, so what I really want to hear is where you stand with alternative fuels. Is there one alternative fuel that you are a huge proponent of? Maybe it's a fuel that's not mentioned in the column. Whatever alternative fuel is your favorite, read Wayne's column and join us in the hot forum discussion, then tell us what your favorite alternative fuel is and why you think it's not only the best, but also if it's a fuel we can depend on for a long period of time. We're all ears here!

Cheers!

This week's hot topic:
What's your favorite alternative fuel?
In the latest Driving It column, CNET editor Wayne Cunningham gives his opinions on alternative fuels. When we asked our members what their favorite alternative fuel is and why, many members sped by to tell us what they thought.

"Electric future (with butanol and
biodiesel for antiques)"

"Electricity is clean, efficient, cheap, and comes from many diverse sources. Electrical production and distribution systems are in place, and are more efficient than the production and distribution of any other fuel. Current lithium ion batteries give good power and range. More..." (Read more)

"H-y-d-r-o-g-e-n!!! h2 is where it's at"
"I can't believe this isn't even an option in this thread? I've talked with an auto industry insider, and he says there was a study done in 'overall environmental impact' from car models, and the Toyota Prius ranked dead last! Why? Because the battery cells will need..." (Read more)

"Bread and jam with some cream cheese"
"Bananas are nice too. What I mean, of course, is USE YOUR OWN POWER. Walk and cycle wherever possible. This runs on renewable energy--food. And if it is not possible for you to use walking and cycling (barring disability), consider why. All the fuels..." (Read more)

"Lots of choices, lots of problems"
"Oil is a hard act to follow--it's been relatively cheap and plentiful, it packs a lot of energy, and it's a liquid at ordinary temperatures and pressures. Unfortunately, it's getting expensive and more scarce, and it's dirty. Hydrogen sounds ideal ideal but has serious..." (Read more)

Here are some interesting comments you've recently submitted on CNET. Read up on it and talk about it.

Is high-def worth it?
To truly go high-def, you've got to spend a lot money. HDTV, high-def cable or satellite, HD DVD or Blu-ray, HD gaming console, high-def cables--it all adds up. Is high definition worth the thousands of dollars needed to achieve it?
Phones in the U.S.A.
If you've traveled to Europe or Asia, you've probably noticed that the cell phone selection there is quite different from what you see in the United States. So what gives? Why do our friends abroad get such a different selection of handsets? Read CNET's On Call column to find out. Why do you think the U.S. cell phone market is so far behind?
Antispy vs. Antispy
Recent changes in the nature of spyware has brought hard times to some pure antispyware vendors. But is that any reason to go after a competitor's clients? Do you currently use a standalone antispyware app? Would you consider switching?

HP Pavilion Slimline s3020n
CNET member BF2007M says:
"I purchased this product as a quick inexpensive replacement for a Pavilion laptop with a motherboard failure. I was very surprised by the features and build quality of this little machine. The only complaint about the hardware is the keyboard which has a real problem with sticking keys. Other components..." (read more)

iRiver S10 (2GB)
CNET member saxdavew says:
"The audio quality is good, as is the FM reception. The FM radio autoscan, however, is poor and only picks up the most powerful stations. If you tune the radio yourself though, the quality is fine. You can choose between stereo and mono mode for listening to the radio, and save up to 20 preset stations..." (read more)

Canon PowerShot SD750 (silver)
CNET member monkabars says:
"The lack of a viewfinder doesn't bother me at all because I almost never used it on my old camera. The 3 inch screen is a dream!!! I love everything about the Canon SD750 except the no image stablilization. The pictures' colors look best when a flash isn't used, but because of this some pictures turn out blurry..." (read more)
