January 2, 2008
Dear CNET members,
Happy new year, everyone! It's a brand spanking new year, and I'm looking forward to seeing all the new technologies and ideas of 2008. The technology industry is already off to a busy start. Coming next week, we have the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, where vendors show off all the cool, innovative gadgets, and what's to come for us gadget and technology enthusiasts. What, you can't attend? No worries--neither can I. But our CNET editors will be there in full force, blogging from the show floor, shooting videos of new products, and hosting the Best of CES awards. So prepare yourself for all the exciting news and product announcements by checking out our CES 2008 preview pages and video of what we expect to make headlines at CES this year. And stay tuned for CNET's awesome and up-to-date coverage of CES next week; it is a sure bet to be a blast to start off the new year!

With 2008 fresh at our heels, what are some of your tech predictions for 2008? Will Apple open its iPhone to all cellular carriers? How about a portable gaming system from Microsoft? But wait, how about if Microsoft's Vista SP1 release makes remarkable improvements to Vista? Whether conservative or far-fetched tech predictions, we want to know what you see in your crystal ball! We have a lot of members already chiming in to post their predictions and now it's your turn. So what are you waiting for? Post your tech predictions right here in this discussion thread and have fun with it!

Cheers!

This week's hot topic:
Your tech prediction
for 2008

When CNET member thriftyT posted his tech prediction for 2008 in the forums, many of our members followed suit and gave their predictions also. Here are just a few.

"2008 predictions"
"My humble projections for 2008: People are coming to the realization that CD/DVD drives are fairly useless. -> Dell, HP, and Apple will all release notebook / subnotebook computers sans optical drives. 2008 will be the year of the smartphone..." (Read more)

"2008 Predictions"
"PS3 'Arrives' and the marketplace is split 3 ways. Game companies start being reluctant to develop single platform titles. Look for more spin offs from Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. Hints of the PSP-2 start surfacing. The DS-2 is a Fall 2008 device. Backward-compatible with DS games, it will meet the PSP head on. The DS will continue to be marketed..." (Read more)

"my humble predictions..."
"1. Wiis will still be difficult to find; so will non-half-***ed games for that platform. 2. Touch-screen iMac....yeah, not going to happen. 3. DVD will continue to be the dominant physical media format over HD-DVD and BlueRay. Torrent pirates everywhere will continue to laugh at those loyal to a physical format..." (Read more)

"Wii global dominating, robots save world?"
"Here are some of my predictions. Some might be a bit far-fetched: 1. Wii sales will slow down slightly in early 2008. But will soon be back to an all-time high when Wii Fit and Smash Bros Brawl are released. (Stock will increase but will still not be enough for the high demand until summer or later in the year.) 2. Apple will release a Tablet PC that will have multitouch technology but will be missing an optical drive or a keyboard. (It will not be as big as a MacBook)..." (Read more)

"My predictions"
"1) Verizon's promise of an open network for wireless devices will not have taken off. It will turn out to be much more hype than reality, with few, if any devices, available to take advantage of an open network. It turns out that the announcement had more to do with stemming defections to..." (Read more)

"Dr. Karl's predictions:"
"K, these are kinda general and I'm sure repeated, but I've stalled long enough... 1) 2008 is the year of wireless. BT headphones and speakers go mainstream. Home automation from your cell phone b/c... 2) 2008 is the year of the touchscreen. While the Microsoft Surface is still some time away, everyone's obsession with the iPhone interface is fed in some pretty ridiculous ways, but also in some good ways (see below).2) 2008 is also the year of the..." Along with discussing tech predictions for 2008, CNET members had plenty of new tech products to talk about this week.

Kodak EasyShare V1253 (Black)
CNET member Piz7777 says:
"This cam has more then exceeded my expectations! The pics are beautiful, the HD video is the best I've ever seen on a cam, and along with the HD dock (bought for only 64 bucks at Circuit City!) this cam is a dream come true! Just make sure you download the free firmware update on Kodak's site to the cam; it speeds up the processing speed of the cam and solves all issues anyone would have with this...." (read more)

Apple MacBook - black (Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard)
CNET member BetterthanurX says:
"Its fast and everything loads quickly...it's definitely no slouch. Leopard works well for the most part but like every new OS needs a little tweaking. Basically everything works well out of the box. It'll get you looks as the laptop looks good, I'd say even better than the white version. However I've found some issues with it..." (read more)
