January 8, 2008
Dear CNET members,
Excuse me while I wipe this drool off my face. Ever since the launch of CNET's CES (Consumer Electronics Show) coverage, somehow I've been unable to keep my cool. I mean, have you checked out some of the coolest and latest gadgetry that's coming out this year? For instance, check out this curved display monitor from Alienware--whoa! Or how about Belkin FlyWire, which allows you to wirelessly transmit six AV sources to your HDTV--look Ma, no wires! Or this product from Bug Labs, the Lego of gadgets that allows you to build your own dream gadget--it's my way or the highway! This is just the tip of the iceberg, folks, as there is so much more to check out and we don't even have to be there! Because even as I type this newsletter, our CNET editors and a few CNET Blog Network members are currently scouring the CES show, blogging their hearts out and shooting videos to update us with the newest tech innovations straight from the CES floor to our homes. So get your napkins out and drool with me.
And when you're done checking out all the new drool-worthy gadgetry, make sure you stop by to check out CNET's Third Annual Best of CES Awards. The awards recognize the best new products at the 2008 show in 10 categories, plus the coveted Best in Show and the People's Voice Award in which you as readers can vote to tell us which product you thought was the hottest and most-talked about at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show. Hurry, voting ends at noon on January, 9, 2008, so get your votes in now! (Vote online here or send a text message with the nominee number to CNET1 (26381). You can find the nominee numbers here or on your mobile device here.)

This week's hot topic:

New gadgets galore at CES 2008!
Here I have picked out just a few of the many thousands of cool gadgets while I was reading through the CNET CES blogs from our editors and staff. Check them out, and if you have a comment tell us what you think of them.
Sony to introduce first OLED TV in U.S.
"Although Sony introduced its 11-inch OLED HDTV in Japan already, the company's big splash announcement at the 2008 CES is that the model, dubbed XEL-1, is now available stateside, for the cool price of $2,500. While the relatively tiny, exorbitantly expensive HDTV itself won't attract many buyers, it represents an important milestone by shepherding in the latest flat-panel TV technology, which may eventually replace plasma and..." New Garmin Nuvi 800 series features voice commands
"Voice commands in portable navigation systems: We had a feeling we'd be seeing more of this trend at CES 2008, and Garmin proved us right with the launch of the Garmin Nuvi 800 series. The series includes two models--the Garmin Nuvi 880 and the Garmin Nuvi 850--and both have speech-recognition technology so you can perform certain navigation functions with the sound of your..." Nyko Wireless Nunchuck takes the wire out of the Wii waggle
"The Nintendo Wii uses a wireless remote to begin with, but that remote still manages to use a cord half the time. Most Wii games use both the Wii Remote and the Wii Nunchuck, an analog stick peripheral that plugs into the base of the remote via a long cable. Nyko first cut the Wii cord with the Wireless Sensor Bar and is taking away yet another tether with the Wireless Nunchuck..." (Read more)

Touchy-feely with the new Moto Rokr E8
"Motorola continues to make up for its dismal Rokr E1 with its new Rokr E8. Announced at the ultra-posh Wynn Hotel during a late-night press conference (we're not sure why Moto had to wait until 9 p.m. on a Sunday to do this), the Z8 is one of two handsets Moto is announcing at CES 2008..." Azentek builds a PC for your car
"All of the core features we want in car technology--GPS navigation, Bluetooth cell phone integration, and audio and media playback--can be handled by a PC, so Azentek is offering two new in-dash PCs, the Atlas CPC-1200 and the Calypso CPC-1100. Both units are powered by an Intel Core Duo 1.66GHz CPU with 1GB of RAM, a 120GB hard drive, and a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive...." (Read more)

Hot products
Along with discussing CES 2008, CNET members had plenty of new tech products to talk about this week.
Sony NWZ-B105F (2GB, black)
CNET member amanning says: "Pros: stunning sound; charges from my PC; small size; starts very very quickly; handy as a pen drive for my PC; can wear it round my neck. Cons: I'm going to lose the cap one day when I'm charging this player; can't delete files, so not good for podcasts; can't drag and drop music files to this (have to use Sonic..."

Hitachi P50H401
CNET member tjubb says: "Standard-def material looks great with my Oppo DVD player, but this unit really shines with HD DVD or Blu-ray material, especially if the aspect ratio of the content is 1.85:1 or 1.78:1 so the entire plasma is filled with high-def goodness. I upgraded from a 42" plasma, and I must say it's a big difference in size. I get more..."

Nikon D40 w/18mm-to-55mm lens
CNET member sccrallstar says: "This is a great camera. I took it over spring break to France and Spain. I kept it on auto or the auto with no flash option. The photos were phenomenal. The day photos, night photos, everything is vibrant with accurate colors. I swear by auto; it's perfect for 98% of your..."
