Broadband: Is my cable connection becoming saturated?

Dear CNET members,

Happy Friday! Before I dive into this week's topic--Steve and his sluggish broadband speeds--I do have something exciting to share with you: a brand-new feature on CNET called My Lists.

As part of CNET TechTracker, My Lists is a feature that allows you to add products and software you find on CNET to a list that you create. I know some of you are saying, "Lee, what the heck is so special about saving items to a so-called 'Wish list'? This isn't anything new!" And you're right; this isn't a new concept--in fact, wish lists are a dime a dozen out in cyberspace. So what's different about this feature?

CNET My Lists is more than just a simple wish/favorites list; with My Lists you can create multiple lists for product research, wish lists, and making recommendations to your friends and the CNET community. You can add notes to each individual item on a list and to the overall list. Use lists to compare products side by side, view specs and product descriptions, and share them through e-mail and social network sites like Facebook, so you can get advice and opinions from your friends and family on the products you're interested in. Your public lists will appear on your CNET profile for other CNET members to check out. Take a look at mine. Oh and for fun, here's my "When I hit the lottery" wish list.

My co-workers and I have put in a lot of long hours to bring you this feature. Once you've tried it out, please let us know what you think. Do you love it? Hate it? Does something not work? Or would you like to see something improved? We want your feedback.

Now back to Steve's question. As you read through all our members' opinions and advice, you'll see that there can be numerous culprits to your service becoming sluggish. Your issues could stem from more neighbors subscribing to cable broadband service, saturating the speed of your service. But many members suggested that might not be the case. Here is a quick breakdown of what our members suggested as possible culprits:

  • Malware has infected your computer and is using your computer as a host/bot to send out more malicious scripts to others. Scan your PC with an antivirus and antispyware utility.
  • Your cable modem or router's performance is deteriorating and needs to be replaced or serviced. Sometimes a simple resetting of the cable modem can cure it.
  • If you have a wireless connection, if it isn't secure, your neighbors could be hitching a free ride using your service.

Now before you contact your ISP to tell them about what you are experiencing, please take our members' advice on some of these possible scenarios and see if there are any improvements in your service. If not, give the ISP a call. Good luck with your situation and if you do solve your issue, please write back to let us know what worked. Have a great weekend and please do check out the new CNET My Lists!

Cheers!
- Lee

Last week's question
Broadband: Is my cable connection becoming saturated?
QuestionIt has been several years since I got my cable modem. Living in what was a relatively sparsely populated area, I enjoyed lightning-fast response times on the Internet. My son grew up and got involved in online shoot-'em-up gaming and downloading, and I detected that when he was doing that, the little activity light on the modem was on a lot more than off, which was expected.

More recently, I have noticed that the activity light is nearly always on, blinking off occasionally and my response lags a bit. I can't blame my son's activities anymore, since he went off to college, and his PC's been powered off. What could possibly be the culprit? Is it time to complain to my ISP? Thanks for your opinions!

Help! Hard-drive space doing the disappearing and reappearing act!
Next week's questionI enjoy reading and learning from your column. I have learned a lot of helpful things from your members, but I am still definitely a newbie. My question is about my hard drive. I have a two-year-old Dell with Intel Core 2 Duo running Windows Vista, 32-bit. Hard drive C is 300GB. A few weeks ago it showed that I had 3.8GB left and the line was way in the red. I did all the usual things like disk clean up, defrag, clearing the cache, and I uninstalled a few things that I don't use. I managed to get it up to 34GB available. I should tell you that there is no way that I have that much stuff on my computer. Just to be sure I bought a 1TB external hard drive to transfer some of my pictures to. Before it arrived, one day I checked to see what was left on my C drive and wow it was back down where it should be at about 180 used. Today the same thing happened. I'm back at having only 7.7GB free. What the heck is going on? I have hardly added anything to the computer since the last incident. Everything that I download now goes directly to the external HDD. I have no idea how it fixed itself the first time or why it has happened again. I need helpppp!
