Cars for your iPod

Wayne Cunningham Wayne Cunningham, Senior Editor September 2, 2008

As the MP3 player with the most market share by huge margins, the iPod has become the choice for car integration. Because iPod integration in a car is so convenient, it is not an unreasonable choice to buy a car partly because of this feature, then buy an iPod to take advantage of it. With an 80 or 160 GB iPod, you can take your entire music collection. And all of the cars we've chosen here integrate well with the iPod, letting you store it in a console or glove box, and select music by artist, album, genre, and playlist through the car's interface. The Ford Focus, with Sync, takes this a step further, letting you play music by saying the name of an artist or album.

The Bottom Line Although none of its cabin tech is over the top, the 2009 Acura TSX offers a complete roster of useful in-dash gadgets. Its enjoyable driving characteristics make it a great driver in a variety of situations, from commute traffic to road trips. The 2008 Audi A5 is a beautiful coupe with an excellent sound system, making it fun to cruise around in or take on jaunts to the country. But it lacks some practicality with its mediocre mileage and navigation system. Although we have some minor criticisms, the 2008 BMW 135i is, overall, an excellent car to drive every day or take out on the track. It scores big in performance and cabin tech. With the exceptional Sync system as standard, the all-new Ford Focus SES has one of the highest tech-to-price ratios of any car we've seen. The 2009 Hyundai Sonata Limited brings the car maker into the tech world by offering good navigation and digital music options. It makes for a good commute car, but the V-6 might be too thirsty for today's gas prices. The 2008 Infiniti M45x offers some of the most cutting-edge cabin tech at a rock-bottom price, compared with the competition. The car is a good luxury cruiser with some performance aspirations.
