Stars and their cars

With fame and fortune comes a wide choice of vehicle, but in our look at what some of Hollywood's hottest stars are driving, we were not surprised to find that many chose the practical Toyota Prius. Among those prizing the green image, low fuel costs, and, most importantly, access to HOV lanes were Seth Green, Julia Roberts, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Two stars in our survey favored Audis, with family man Brad Pitt driving a Q7 and lover of German engineering Jason Statham piloting an S8. When Tom Cruise can keep his seat, he's driving a Porsche 911, while furious Vin Diesel apparently likes the comforts of a Mercedes-Benz SL. Although the model years may not match, we've come up with our equivalent review cars.

Bottom line
Although still a fuel economy champion, the 2008 Toyota Prius is about to be replaced by a new generation that should be better in every way. The car is a great commuter, but wait for the 2010 model.
With its fantastic performance, the 2008 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet works best as a track car or a weekend cruiser on mountain roads with the top down. Its mediocre cabin electronics reduce its comfort and convenience for everyday driving.
The 2009 Audi S8 is a very powerful big sedan with some excellent handling features, but it doesn't offer all of the latest in-dash gizmos, and you trade a luxury ride for performance.
The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL550 is a big, expensive roadster with some nice aesthetic touches. It has practical features here and there, but this car is more about the statement it makes when you roll up to a restaurant or movie premiere.
