iPod alarm clock radios compared

John P. Falcone John P. Falcone, Senior Editor April 6, 2009

Need to wake up to that one specific song in your playlist that really gets your blood pumping? An iPod clock radio is right up your alley. More than just an iPod speaker system, each of the six models shown below also includes a clock and an alarm system, allowing you to doze off or wake up to your choice of songs--or podcast or audiobook, for that matter--while your iPod charges for the day ahead. And while you can't get radio reception on your iPod (yet), each of these systems, with the exception of the iHome iH4, also offers standard AM/FM radio as well. Likewise, while only a single version is shown for each, most of the models are available in white or black. Bottom line: With models available in a variety of sizes, form factors, and price points, you'll be sure to find a model that fits your needs.

The Bottom Line Those looking to wake up to their iPod's tunes should consider the Memorex iWake, an affordable clock-radio option with sleeker styling than its competitors. Sound quality could be better, though. For iPod owners who want to turn their iPod into an alarm clock and add radio to the mix--without losing portability--the JVC RA-P10 speakers get the job done, but sound quality will be a deterrent for picky listeners. While it lacks any radio functionality, the iHome iH4 is a solid value if you're looking for a low-cost bedside iPod audio speaker that recharges your iPod while you sleep and has a built-in clock and alarm. For iPod owners in the market for a clock radio, the iHome iH5 is an attractive option. The iPod-friendly JBL On Time clock radio offers reasonable sound quality and a distinct halo design. While its sound didn't blow us away, the iYiYi offers improved bass over the iSongBook and decent features in an attractively styled package.
