iPhone's assault on batteries

Tim Moynihan Tim Moynihan, Features editor June 16, 2008

Last week, Apple released an iPhone battery-life chart that claimed the device will offer up to eight hours of talk time on a single charge. That's news in itself, but Apple also offered a glimpse at which phones it considers iPhone competitors. An interesting point to note is that they're all AT&T/Cingular phones except for the unlocked Nokia N95. That could mean Apple is focusing on getting current AT&T/Cingular subscribers to switch to the iPhone. A glaring omission is the Cingular 8525, one of our top-rated smart phones. Here's a side-by-side look at the phones Apple pitted the iPhone's battery life against.

The Bottom Line With a 5-megapixel camera, advanced multimedia capabilities, and GPS, there's no doubt that the Nokia N95 is one of the most feature-packed smart phones to date, but poor battery life and sluggish performance make it hard to justify the high price tag. The Samsung BlackJack heralds another 3G-enabled smart phone to Cingular's lineup. While it supports the carrier's video and music service, some design and performance issues trip up this otherwise sexy device. Though it doesn't bring Wi-Fi or 3G support, the BlackBerry Curve offers a best-of-breed design and a well-rounded set of features to make it an attractive device for consumers and mobile professionals alike. The Palm Treo 750 includes some nice enhancements and offers good usability, but you can get more for your money with the Cingular 8525. Despite some important missing features, a slow data network, and call quality that doesn't always deliver, the Apple iPhone sets a new benchmark for an integrated cell phone and MP3 player.
