iPhone alternatives: Cell phones that can compete with Apple's handset

Like the original iPhone the new iPhone 3G will win a lot of attention. Its touch-screen interface, music and video capability, full Internet browser, and new 3G support are impressive, but it's hardly the first or only cell phone around to offer those features. So if you can't afford the iPhone, or you just don't want to switch to AT&T, there are quite a few handsets that give Apple's device a run for its money. They may not be just like the iPhone, but they can do many of the same things (sometimes more), and can do so just as well. The Samsung Instinct is a new phone for Sprint. It offers an appealing design with a sold and user-friendly feature set. We just wish it had better call quality. The HTC Touch comes in two versions: an unlocked GSM model and a CDMA Touch for Sprint. The LG Prada KE850 is also sleek and beautiful, and it offers some high-end multimedia features. Armani designed a touch-screen phone as well, but we didn't like it quite as much. Then there's the LG Voyager VX10000; its gorgeous external display also offers a touch screen and support for live TV. Verizon has the LG Vu as well. Finally, we have the Nokia N95. It's quite expensive, and it lacks a touch screen, but it's a powerful multimedia handset.

Review summary The Samsung Instinct stands out as one of Sprint's finest devices to date. It's just too bad its call quality could use some improvement. The HTC Touch cell phone for Sprint boasts an innovative touch screen, a sleek interface, and a nice set of features, but the lack of a sizable keyboard really limits the usability of this device. While the LG Prada is a gorgeous phone with a stunning touch screen display, its simple feature set may not justify its hefty price tag. That said, if you want one of the most fashionable phones available, the LG Prada is definitely the phone to get. Though we had some minor complaints here and there, the Voyager's sleek design, generous feature set and excellent performance make it the best LG messaging and multimedia phone by far. The North American Edition of the Nokia N95 brings some notable additions, including 3G support and better performance, to make this powerful smart phone even better. However, it'll still leave a deep gouge in your wallet.
