Best Wi-Fi home entertainment products

Jeff Bakalar Jeff Bakalar, Assistant Editor May 16, 2008

Who needs an Ethernet cable when some of the latest and greatest devices now offer Wi-Fi support? Whether it's a gaming console or your personal music hub, we've narrowed down a list of top Wi-Fi entertainment products for your home. On the gaming front, both Sony and Nintendo offer built-in Wi-Fi (it's a pricey add-on accessory for the Xbox 360). The Sony VGF-WA1 and Logitech Squeezebox Duet, both of which stream all manner of music and Internet radio stations to your home stereo, are both Wi-Fi-ready (the more expensive Sonos needs at least one wired connection). The Chumby is a sort of Web-connected Internet alarm clock and information appliance. And the Apple TV gives you access to iTunes movies and music on your television. In other words, Wi-Fi's not just your PC anymore.

The Bottom Line While Sony has cut a few corners to get its entry-level PlayStation 3 below $400, it's still a great game console and Blu-ray player for the money--so long as you can live without backward compatibility for PS2 games. Whether you use it as a digital photo frame, Internet radio receiver, an advanced alarm clock, or some Web 2.0 task of your own devising, the Chumby is an extremely fun tech toy for the wired, modern home. It lacks the graphical prowess and rich media features of the Xbox 360 and the PS3, but the Nintendo Wii's combination of unique motion-sensitive controllers and emphasis on fun gameplay make the ultra-affordable console hard to resist. The Sony VAIO VGF-WA1 is a stylish tabletop radio that can stream digital music from your PC, but a few key feature upgrades would have made us like it even more. With its excellent iPod-like remote, the Logitech Squeezebox Duet is an ideal way to stream the full range of digital music--including files on your computer's hard drive, premium subscription music services, and free Internet radio--to your living room stereo system. With its enhanced iTunes video offerings, PC-free operation, and a lower price tag, the updated Apple TV is a compelling Internet-enabled entertainment device for the living room.
