Ultimate tailgaters: Best cars for the game

Wayne Cunningham Wayne Cunningham, Senior Editor September 24, 2008

With a good tailgate party going, you might not even make it to the game. However, it won't be good unless you have a car with enough room for barbecues, coolers, and good friends. A good music system doesn't hurt either. The Dodge Journey also brings in some in-car music storage, so you don't have to bring CDs, while the Infiniti EX35 adds to those features a system that will get you unscathed around crowded parking lots. The Ford Edge includes excellent integration with MP3 players through its Sync system. The Yukon Hybrid will let you save gas as it glides quietly around the parking lot under electric power. Or for a change of pace, the Mini Clubman makes a definite statement while providing ample room for tailgating necessities.

The Bottom Line The 2009 Dodge Journey is a well-sized seven-passenger crossover with a full collection of cabin tech options to keep occupants entertained, but its thirsty V-6 spells trouble at the pump. Although offering a character-less driving experience, the top-notch cabin electronics make entertainment and communications effortless in the 2008 Ford Edge Limited. The 2008 GMC Yukon Hybrid provides the most power, utility, and economy available today. It makes a good choice if you need to haul people, cargo, and trailers, but it comes up a little short in its cabin tech. Impressive for its technology, the 2008 Infiniti EX35 Journey brings in all the latest gadgets, and adds a few unique ones not seen on other cars. It works well as an all-purpose car with a sporty edge. Mini makes the 2008 Mini Cooper S Clubman a bit more practical with extra cargo area, while preserving the things that made the relaunched Mini stand out in the first place.
