Bluetooth in-car calling devices

Kevin Massy Kevin Massy, Associate Editor March 20, 2008

Bluetooth hands-free calling systems in cars are nothing new, but they might start becoming a lot more commonplace as more states and cities adopt legislation banning the use of cell phones while behind the wheel. While factory-fitted Bluetooth hands-free calling systems are the most seamless way of connecting your phone and your car, these systems are generally only available on newer and high-end cars. While there are dozens of Bluetooth headsets on the market, some drivers just don't like the idea of driving around with big blue lights attached to the side of their heads. The other option is a universal Bluetooth kit. These can either be standalone speakerphones such as the Sony Ericsson HCB-120, the LG MSB-100, and the Spracht Aura Mobile BT, or systems that are integrated into the car stereo such as Parrot's CK3000 Evolution, CK3100, and 3200LS. Check out our full reviews of all these below and get ready for some hands-free calling while hands-on hauling.

The Bottom Line With its simple, elegant design, the Sony Ericsson HCB-120 speakerphone makes an attractive addition to the interior of any car. However, its performance is heavily dependent on the paired cell phone, and while its sound quality is good, it's not loud enough. The LG MSB-100 is a portable stereo speakerphone that can handle both phone calls as well as streaming music, but don't expect superior sound. The Spracht Aura Mobile BT is a great, portable, multifunctional speakerphone that can be used with cell phones, VoIP calls, or just a normal cordless phone. Its excellent sound quality and ability to be used in the car as a hands-free device make it even more compelling. However, the lack of a USB charger and the inability to make calls from the device may not be worth the high price tag. The Parrot CK3000 Evolution is a cost-effective, feature-rich hands-free calling system. Its simple design masks some very easy to use options, including a great voice-command interface. The Parrot CK3100 combines a simple, easy to use control interface with a good voice-recognition system to provide drivers with easy hands-free calling on the road. The Parrot 3200 LS Color combines everything we like about previous Parrot devices--including a simple control interface and a great voice recognition system--with a striking color display. The result is an attractive, easy to use aftermarket hands-free calling device.
