In-car GPS devices with integrated Bluetooth

Bonnie Cha Bonnie Cha, Senior Associate Editor April 6, 2009

You'd think driving from point A to point B would be a pretty simple task, but you can hit some roadblocks along the way. You get lost, people are calling to see where you are--all of which can be frustrating and distracting. Fortunately, there are driving aids that can help the situation. These six in-car GPS devices not only give you text- and voice-guided driving directions, but they also have integrated Bluetooth so you can pair them with your Bluetooth-enabled phone to make hands-free calls. Granted, it'd be safer if you just didn't talk on your phone in the car at all, but at least this way, you can keep your hands on the wheel. Read our reviews to see if one is right for you.

The Bottom Line If you can afford the hefty price tag, the Garmin Nuvi 660 is a solid-performing and versatile GPS device that offers all the navigation basics, tools for the world traveler, Bluetooth, and more. Despite some minor shortcomings, the Magellan Maestro 4250 is a solid and accurate mid-level portable navigation system with a helpful voice-command feature. For the company's first stab at the GPS market, the Asus R700t is an impressive debut, offering some great navigation features. However, we'd like to see the addition of text-to-speech functionality and smoother performance before completely committing to it. If you're looking for a high-end in-car GPS with the latest features, the TomTom GO 930 delivers with accurate directions and new navigation tools like advanced lane guidance and voice address entry. The sleek Mio C520 is a good-value GPS device, packing in advanced navigation features, a large screen, and other extras for an affordable price. However, you can get a better user experience and smoother performance from competing systems. The Sony NV-U83T is a seemingly attractive in-car GPS with a large display and useful navigation features, but it shows its ugly side with poor directions and subpar performance.
