City trekkers: Pocket-size GPS devices

Bonnie Cha Bonnie Cha, Senior Associate Editor May 23, 2007

We talk a lot about in-car navigation systems here at CNET, but we realize there are other types and uses for GPS devices. They're guiding lights for boaters and invaluable tools when you're out hiking or camping in the wilderness. But what about when you're trying to conquer the urban jungle? Trekking around city streets, especially in places such as New York and Chicago, can be quite confusing to natives and visitors alike. However, there are pocket-size GPS devices, such as the four below, that can help you navigate the concrete maze with color maps, points of interest, and pedestrian mode route creation--all in a neat little gadget so you don't have to mess with paper maps. Even better, when you're done navigating, you can use these devices for other things, as the Mio H610 and Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX N100 offer multimedia features, while the HP iPaq rx5900 and Pharos Traveler GPS 525 double as PDAs. Alternatively, there's a growing trend in the cell phone industry to add GPS receivers or location-based services to handsets, so you can get similar navigation capabilities right on your phone.

The Bottom Line Though not ideal for the car, the ultraportable Mio H610 is an accurate navigator and a decent multimedia player for use on foot. Poor performance mars the otherwise nicely designed and navigation and multimedia-filled Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX N100. Maps and personal data go hand in hand with the Pharos Traveler GPS 525, a PDA that effectively combines organization with navigation to not only find where you are but also point you where to go. The HP iPaq rx5900 Travel Companion delivers a sleek all-in-one navigation, productivity, and entertainment device to mobile professionals; we just wish it had better battery life.
