Internet Security for your Windows 98 and Me systems

Robert Vamosi Robert Vamosi, Senior Editor July 11, 2006

With its July 2006 security bulletin, Microsoft formally ends its technical support for Windows 98 and Me operating systems. That doesn't mean your operating systems will stop working, only that Microsoft will no longer issue patches for new security vulnerabilities affecting these OSs. That's bad news for individuals who lack the hardware to upgrade to the newer Windows XP operating sytem. Fortunately, several good third-party applications will continue to protect these legendary operating systems.

The Bottom Line McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006 packs a powerful protection arsenal--but it's far too slow. Loyal McAfee users should upgrade for the automatic spyware and phishing blockers, but the rest of us should seek security elsewhere, such as ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 6.
