Best Internet security suites: 2007

Robert Vamosi Robert Vamosi, Senior Editor March 5, 2007

Without a corporate IT staff or gateway antivirus and firewall solutions, small businesses and home desktop users need some kind of protection from hackers and other Internet security threats. These Internet security suites bundle everything you need, from antivirus protection to firewall blocking to Internet privacy, in one box. Plus, they offer additional privacy protection, such as the blocking of objectionable Web sites, spam, and spyware--all in one convenient package. This year, we recommend ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7 over similar collections from Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, and CA. Of these, Norton Internet Security 2007 showed the most promise, improving its system performance and including new tools that should put ZoneAlarm on notice. McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007 also improved this year with a new design and new tools. But Trend Micro and CA both slipped in our opinion with pesky glitches in their personal firewalls. ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7, on the other hand, offers the most complete Internet security for your PC without affecting its performance.

The Bottom Line ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7 provides the perfect balance between best-of-breed security protection and ease of use, providing the home user with superior protection that's light on system resources. Norton Internet Security 2007 makes significant gains over last year, including cutting-edge rootkit and behavioral monitoring features found nowhere else, but the overall package could be serious overkill for the average desktop owner. Despite the interface redesign, the McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007 feels like a grab bag of security and system performance tools. It'll keep your PC safe, but we think there are other products on the market that do so with greater ease. Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 was hard to install and produced several noticeable glitches that distracted us from the benefits of the suite. CA Internet Security Suite 2007 feels like a pasted-together trial version of what CA offers in terms of consumer protection. The suite fails to integrate and lacks antiphishing, antirootkit, and basic IM protection found elsewhere.
