High-end HDTV accessories and add-ons

David Katzmaier David Katzmaier, Senior Editor December 2, 2008

You've dropped a massive wad on a Pioneer Elite Kuro or a Samsung 950 series or a Sony XBR8, and now you're looking for add-ons and accessories worthy of your high-end HDTV's lofty pedigree. This list should whet your discerning whistle.

First up is the highest-rated Harmony remote we've ever tested, although if you want a tablet with a bigger screen you might prefer the Harmony 1000. Next is Samsung's Netflix- and Pandora-capable Blu-ray player, which delivers every bit of the video quality of a PS3, if not the game console's other capabilities. TiVo's best HD model is a no-brainer step-up over you cable company's crummy DVR (unless you have satellite), and Sling's high-end video streamer lets you bring quality TV wherever you go. And while we generally recommend a full-fledged home theater speaker system for the very best audio, Yamaha's Digital Sound Projector preserves your decorator's vision and still sounds great. Finally, to surf the Web and do other PC-centric tasks from your living room couch, the slick Asus Essentio is tough to beat.

The Bottom Line While it's missing an RF option, Logitech's Harmony One is one of the best--if not the best--universal remote we've ever tested. The Samsung BD-P2550 adds Netflix and Pandora to an already well-featured and top-performing Blu-ray player, with only some minor disc compatibility issues giving us pause. The TiVo HD XL charges a hefty premium for its spacious recording capacity and THX certification, but most users will be content sticking to the all-but-identical standard TiVo HD DVR. The Sling Media Pro-HD streams live TV to your PC or smartphone--but for most users, its excellent HD-capable picture quality will be diminished when accessed outside of the home network. The addition of enhanced video connectivity options cements Yamaha's already excellent Digital Sound Projector technology as the go-to choice for single-speaker surround sound.
