Cut your landline with the help of these devices

If you could use your cell phone as your primary means of communication and get rid of your expensive landline completely, why wouldn't you? Because cell coverage isn't ubiquitous, and many people suffer from spotty cell coverage at home. VoIP options such as Vonage exist of course, as well as Skype, but if you already have a cell phone plan, it makes sense to just go with the one provider. T-Mobile offers two options for those who want to cut their landline: a VoIP service called T-Mobile @Home that can work with any plain ol' telephone, and the T-Mobile HotSpot @Home service, which allows compatible phones to make calls over Wi-Fi, promising improved signal strength along the way. Sprint also provides a way to boost signal strength via a home broadband network in the form of the Sprint Airave, which doesn't require a special cell phone at all--any Sprint phone will work with it.

| The Bottom Line |
T-Mobile @Home is an affordable and easy way to add VoIP service to a regular home telephone.
|
Despite a few problems when transitioning between cellular airwaves and wireless networks, the T-Mobile HotSpot @Home service is a great idea. You can save money, get better reception, and possibly even get rid of your existing landline. However, we would wait until the service supports more phones.
|
The Sprint Airave is an easy way to boost your Sprint cell coverage at home, and possibly replace your landline in the process.
