iPod accessories that tempt me to use an iPod

Jasmine France Jasmine France, Senior Associate Editor October 24, 2006

I may choose not to use an iPod in my personal life, but I'm constantly toying with the reigning king of MP3 players at work in order to keep our ultimate iPod accessories story up and running. It's exactly this task that simultaneously tempts me into switching to an iPod and makes me loathe the player for bogarting all the third-party accessories. And then there's the fact that I own an iBook, with which the Creative Zen V Plus refuses to communicate. Thus, I longingly eye iPod accessories.

What tempts me the most? First, there's the Logitech mm32, which features a cool, cylindrical design that's small enough to tote on any trip (and it comes with a handy carrying case), yet sounds decent enough to listen to at home. Even better, though this speaker system was obviously designed with the iPod in mind, it also works with any other player...yay for me! And I was immediately taken by the Apple Radio Remote. This accessory was a long time coming, and it is a must-have for fans of FM radio. Also, I dig the variety of unique designs offered by GelaSkins' iPod stickers, and I know it's a little ridiculous, but Griffin's Disko is seriously eye-catching (ooh...look at all the flashing lights). Oh, and I'd love to be able to use the Nike + iPod Sport Kit; the fitness tracking software is excellently designed and provides a great way to reach fitness goals. Finally, there's the iRecord, a one-touch system that records videos directly to the iPod. Luckily for me, Creative Zen support is pending.

The Bottom Line Frequent travelers who want to release their music from the confines of an MP3 player should seriously consider the Logitech mm32. If you own a 5G iPod or an iPod Nano and can't live without FM radio, we highly recommend the Apple iPod Radio Remote. GelaSkins are artistic stickers for your iPod that do double duty as scratch protectors. Stick one on to make your iPod unique again. If you're an iPod or Sansa owner looking to light up your own private dance floor--raver style--then Griffin's Disko could be right up your alley. Practical-minded folks, however, should steer clear. Maybe it's not the reason to buy a Nano, but the useful Nike + iPod Sport Kit and the data-centered Nike+ Web site will appeal to runners who already own a Nano. If you need an easy way to record content for your iPod or PSP--and you want to view your protected DVDs on a portable device--the iRecord is a great solution.
