The brainy bunch: CNET readers' favorite smartphones

Bonnie Cha Bonnie Cha, Senior Associate Editor April 7, 2009

Smartphones are taking off with great speed. And is it any wonder? These brainy gadgets combine the smarts of a cell phone and a PDA into one, and they've come a long way in terms of design (good-bye, bricklike phones). Now, while we put these devices through their paces in CNET Labs, it's you, our readers, who are the harshest critics. After all, you're the ones living with and using these gadgets every day. Here are the six of the latest smartphones that you gave a passing grade. Each carrier is represented, so read our reviews to see if one is right for you.

The Bottom Line Despite some performance issues, the HTC Touch Pro is one of Sprint's most feature-packed and powerful smartphones for business users. For those who waited, the RIM BlackBerry Bold won't disappoint. The Bold impresses with its brilliant display, enhanced productivity tools, and excellent multimedia performance to deliver a more powerful and well-rounded smartphone to mobile professionals. Though slightly more expensive, Verizon customers looking for a touch-screen smartphone will get a better user experience and faster performance from the Samsung Omnia than the RIM BlackBerry Storm. We're disappointed by the lack of 3G, but the RIM BlackBerry Curve 8900 is a solid update to the Curve series, bringing a better design, improved features, and faster performance and is one of T-Mobile's top smartphone offerings. Mobile professionals who need a powerful but sleek messaging-centric smartphone will be well-served by the Nokia E71; just be prepared to pay a price. While we're not in love with the design and would have liked some additional features, the real beauty of the T-Mobile G1 is the Google Android platform, as it has the potential to make smartphones more personal and powerful. That said, it's not quite there yet, so for now, the G1 is best suited for early adopters and gadget hounds, rather than consumers and business users.
