The T-Mobile Sidekick family album

Bonnie Cha Bonnie Cha, Senior Associate Editor August 1, 2008

With a little help from celebrities like Paris Hilton, Snoop Dogg, and Dwyane Wade, the T-Mobile Sidekick has become a popular gadget with the younger crowd. However, it's not just the celebrity endorsements that give the device street cred. The Sidekick is great at messaging, whether it be instant, text, or e-mail. The handheld comes with its own T-Mobile e-mail account and has Yahoo, AIM, and Windows Live IM clients preinstalled on the device. Plus, there's a spacious, full QWERTY keyboard for easy typing and with the no-fuss setup, we can understand the Sidekick's appeal. Of course, there are other features, too. It offers decent call quality, an HTML Web browser, a photo viewer, and finally stereo Bluetooth support and video recording and playback. If you're in the market for a Sidekick. Read on to see if one is right for you.

The Bottom Line The T-Mobile Sidekick iD offers all the great messaging capabilities of the Sidekick 3 at half the price, but the rest of the handheld's feature set is very limited; too bare-bones, in our opinion. That said, young, cash-strapped kids will find the iD to be a good option. The T-Mobile Sidekick 3 brings some notable additions, such as Bluetooth and an MP3 player, and continues to be a solid messaging device for the younger crowd; we just wish it had a better screen. With the new features, extra level of customization, and affordable price tag, the T-Mobile Sidekick is a good choice for the carrier's younger customers looking for an all-in-one communication device. The T-Mobile Sidekick LX will continue to attract a legion of young fans with its fresh design and excellent messaging capabilities. We like the improved display, and the software update brings some much-needed additions to the features department. With its slide-up screen, the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide offers a nice design alternative to the other Sidekick models. It's fine for first-time users but diehard Sidekick fans may prefer the more robust T-Mobile Sidekick LX.
