A pocketful of Windows Mobile 6 smart phones
Bonnie Cha, Senior Associate Editor August 3, 2007
When Microsoft released Windows Mobile 6 back in February 2007, the biggest buzz wasn't so much about the new features of the mobile operating system but more about the impending rollout of new PDAs and smart phones. It's taken awhile, but we're finally seeing the widespread availability of such devices. HP was actually first out of the gate, announcing the HP iPaq 510 Voice Messenger the same day that Microsoft's WM6 was revealed at 3GSM World Congress. The voice-centric smart phone is now available unlocked through HP. Sprint customers finally got a reprieve from their aging Windows Mobile 5 smart phone, as the carrier released the Sprint Mogul by HTC: a powerful, fast, and feature-packed device for the most demanding business users. You can get the GSM equivalent--well, minus the 3G support--with the T-Mobile Wing. If you crave something a little smaller, check out the HTC Vox S710 and the HTC Cavalier S630. Alternatively, if you don't feel like getting a new device, T-Mobile is offering an OS upgrade for the T-Mobile Dash, and AT&T has plans to release an update for the Cingular 8525 as well as a rebranded model. Palm said it would also give its Palm Treo 750 the Windows Mobile 6 treatment. Finally, there's the unique HTC Touch. With its innovative touch screen technology, some have coined it as an Apple iPhone rival, and while that's debatable, the fact is that this is one thin-and-light Windows Mobile smart phone running the full Professional Edition (we just wish there was a better keyboard option). So, those are your Windows Mobile 6 choices so far. We expect to see more devices (and OS updates) trickle down the pipeline throughout the rest of the year, so keep it dialed in here. And check out our reviews below to see if one is right for you.

| The Bottom Line | The Sprint Mogul by HTC brings some needed design and feature updates to its predecessor, and refreshes the carrier's staid lineup of smartphones. It has some performance issues, but is worth the upgrade. | The HTC Touch boasts an innovative touch screen and sleek interface, but the lack of a sizable keyboard really limits the usability of this device. And despite the beautiful hardware, the Windows Mobile smart phone lags in performance and needs a bit more tweaking before we're ready to snatch one up. |
