A new view: Windows Mobile 6.5 phones

Bonnie Cha Bonnie Cha, Senior Associate Editor October 27, 2009

Microsoft has officially launched Windows Mobile 6.5, an upgrade to its mobile operating system. While not a major overhaul of the OS, 6.5 does bring a number of enhancements and new services. Interface changes were made to make Windows phones more touch- and consumer-friendly. Internet Explorer Mobile got some much-needed attention, adding new navigation tools as well as Flash Lite support. Microsoft also launched its own app store, Windows Marketplace for Mobile, and a backup service called My Phone.

Of course, with new software, there also comes new hardware. Microsoft has already said that it will launch more than 30 Windows 6.5 phones by the end of the year and has partnerships with numerous handset manufacturers, including HTC, LG, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson. Here are five models that are available on the market now. Read on to find out what they offer and see if one is right for you.

The Bottom Line Delivering an improved design and updated operating system, the HTC Tilt2 is a worthy upgrade and offers AT&T's business customers a powerful smartphone. While not the flashiest smartphone on the block, the Samsung Intrepid offers Sprint customers an affordable and solid messaging world phone. The HTC Imagio is rich with both multimedia and business features, making it a great all-in-one smartphone for the Verizon globetrotter. The HTC Pure offers AT&T customers an affordable touch-screen smartphone that showcases a more intuitive Windows Mobile operating system and strikes a nice balance between work and play. That said, those looking for a handset that excels in multimedia and Web browsing should stick with the iPhone. With the design improvements and enhancements of Windows Mobile 6.5, the HTC Touch2 makes for a nice smartphone for first-time users. Unfortunately, it's not bound for the U.S. and may not be worth its unlocked price.
